Sonic Youth to release album through Starbucks

by Kev Kharas
Artists: Sonic Youth

DiS might as well just play that headline straight. Alt-post-punk-rock legends Sonic Youth are to release an album through ubiquitous coffeeshop Starbucks.

Thurston Moore disclosed news of the record - a compilation of tracks chosen by famous creatives - in an interview with Pitchfork.

Moore?

"So all these people, from Jeff Tweedy to Beck to Marc Jacobs to Portia de Rossi to Michelle Williams, they all chose their favorite songs and wrote a little thing about it."

"So it's a compilation record of artists choosing songs of Sonic Youth. There's going to be one exclusive song of ours that we'll record..."

Mr Moore went on to laugh at suggestions the record would be "up at the counter along with the biscotti and the disc of Elton John's favorite [sic] Christmas songs" before claiming that "Starbucks is the new record store, right?".

Yr idols are killing themselves. DiScuss:...

.

"Post-rock legends"? Come again?

Hi, here I am again

What do you want?

.

Since when were Sonic Youth a post-rock band?

They might get lumped in with *shudder* Explosions in The Sky

some really early sonic youth

and maybe providence are abit post rock

plus

that's not actually what it says

(it was changed)

(to cover all bases)

oh

:/

.

I changed the news! My anal moan about musical pigeonholing changed the news!

What a fine Monday it is turning out to be.

STOP!!!

Stop it! Getting boring now.

Lindsay Bluth-Fünke

likes Sonic Youth? Cool!

Dr. Fünke’s 100% Natural Good-Time Family-Band Solution...

...drew obvious influences from SY, non?

To Tin Soy Cut

I don't think its worth us getting all high and mighty with any "Sell out" business..they should of changed their name to Sonic Elderly a while ago anyway and this sort of shit happens to all the 'big' bands eventually. They've done pretty well going for 30 years and not doing it so much.

yes but

as I pointed out in a different thread over the weekend, Starbucks (or any of the big coffee chains - they almost all buy their coffee via Nestle, Kraft, Procter & Gamble and Sara Lee) is not just any old big corporation to sell out to. There are some serious issues with trade ethics that are specific to mass market coffee:

THEY ARE SIGNED

TO UNIVERSAL!

I would've thought the practises of Nestle/Kraft/etc

make those of UMG pale in comparison. Not least because they're so much bigger. And the entertainment corps mainly stick to exploiting people in the developed world, who in the grand scheme of things are already rich anyway.

UMG is part of Vivendi

who are big big conglomerate who i'm sure have their fingers in some nasty pies somewhere or other.

they're out of contract

with Geffen as far as I'm aware at the moment.

And yes, apparently Vivendi have a fwe questionable interests state-side, but not too sure what they are. there was once a post about it on these here boards too.

exactly

Corporate Rock legitimises unethical trade/human rights practices!

where has the edge gone, rocxk is supposed to be dangerous not subservient :(

i thought

starbucks coffee was fair trade? or did i make that up? not that it would automatically make them upstanding citizens...

yes and no

They do sell packs of Fair Trade beans in their stores, and you may even be able to buy *filter* coffee which is Fair Trade from time to time - they use this to claim that they are one of the biggest retailers of Fair Trade coffee. However, the stuff they use to make espresso isn't Fair Trade. Of the high street stores, I think Costa will make espresso with Fair Trade if you ask for it (they keep a special supply), and AMT Espresso use only Fair Trade.

I thought they weren't that bad

ethics wise and peoples problem with them is their aggressive growth leading to gentrification, as far as coffee I think they pay producers substantially over market value to the producers, I think oxfam have some beef with them though

all starbs coffee

is fairly traded, fairtrade is actually a company and farmers have to buy the right to be labeled fairtrade. most, obviously, can't afford that so starbucks pay the fairtrade rate to all farmers regardless of labels.

plus, SY were the ones that persuaded Nirvana to go to a major, so they've never been uber idealistic.

but

this was a joke, wasn't it??

We all deserve to die.

All of us.

surely a joke?

I find

"favorite [sic]" hilarious and silly.

Yes it may happen to all bands

and yes, they have been signed to Geffen for years now, but really, it leaves a slightly bitter taste in the mouth (boom boom). Like stated above, this isnt just another band and this is not just another company. You only have to watch The Year That Punk Broke to see the nature of the reversal in attitude. I dont understand the view that "oh everyone does this now so its ok" - its still worthy of discussion and criticism

i dont get

why they dont just release stuff on their own label??

Hey Kool Thing

come here, sit down
There’s something I gotta ask you.
I just wanna know, what are you gonna do for me?
I mean, are you gonna liberate us girls
From male white corporate oppression?

Hrmm

Their anti-corporate schtick was always a bit hollow.

The whole fucking band was hollow

They've spent their entire career trying to sell out but they lack the talent. Starbucks? Who in hell do they think is going to buy their record?

gimme

sonic youth anywhere and anytime...

Locochocolatteyaya

They turned bum notes into an art form and this is just another one.
