Generation Gap?

OK, so I'm down in the community garage playing a little gee-tar with a mate and the youngsters in our apartment complex begin coming around. So while it's pleasing to see an electric guitar is still able to get them away from their Playstations, the ensuing singer auditions didn't go quite as well:

Me: OK, I kin play just about any Bowie song.
Them: (Blank stare.)

Me: OK, the Stones. Simple three chord shit, easy and fun!
Them: (Blank stare.)

My fault. Gotta think about newer bands. Fine and dandy!

Me: Blur. Fucking Blur! Who wants to sing Coffee & TV. Gonna be great!!
Them: (Blank stare.)

Then it was:

Them: How about Avenge7(something)??
Me: (Blank stare.)

Multiple Choice:
I should bridge the musical gap by:

a) Learn AFI songs.
b) Go back to my own apartment where I belong.
c) Find a middleground. I know a couple Nirvana songs.
d) None of the above.

Ans:
a) Oh, hell no! b) 1/2 credit if you answered b. Who wants to babysit a bunch of hyper-active teenagers? c)Have you heard someone other than Kurt sing Come As You Are? I did last night and it wasn't pretty! d) CORRECT. "This song is called Godless, it's by the Dandy Warhols and this is the song we're gonna learn you lazy irresponsible drug addicts in training!"

The conversation thread got me to share this little snipet with ya's. I'm pretty sure I did the right thing here, but perhaps there's is a middleground, I dunno... Anyway, this is my little love letter to you kids, who more often than not know what's what when it comes to music. Thank the gods!!

Re: Generation Gap?

on richard and judy they went round school play grounds with pictures of popular boy bands throughout the years none of them recognised the beatles all of them recognised mc fly and knew their names !

Re: Generation Gap?

Glad to see the long posts back :-)

It's a shame, I found though that at 14-15 I knew nothing but you start discovering the bands which influenced your favourite bands. Eventually they will find your way to the classics, perhaps they haven't taken this journey yet.
It helped that my dad was always playing Stones, Beatles, Beach Boys, Blondie so I already had a footing there.

Try introducing them to the new stuff, maybe do some jamming and slip them in, if they have ears they should recognise some of the Bowie and Stones.

Really, they should teach this kind of stuff at school...

Re: Generation Gap?

Yup... definitely (d)… brainwash them!
Think of it as community service ;-)

Plan (b) is only for when things turn ugly…

Re: Generation Gap?

(a)

I wish i could play them.
