Re: best album of 2005 so far...

I love you... finally someone who choses kaisers over bloc, i thought i was the only one... Yes so best album... shit does it have to be of 2005??? i dont no any AHHHHHHHHHH im going to explode

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

This is going to be filled with 'Frances the Mute' and 'Silent Alarm' posts.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

You have forgotten the two MOST IMPORTANT saviours of music: stereophonics and feeder .....why the fuck is the music press wanking all over the stereophonics new album it is still rubbish, if they want to wank over something than at least choose a kelly brook poster AND (to continue rant) what the fuck are little spotty oinks doing voting wayne rooney's g/f in the top 25 sexist women of fhm...must be true; too much wanking must make you go blind

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

brand new...so, you replied to a kaiser post with ' it's nice that some music is fun and doesn't make you think' type of mantra. fair enough, but now you're saying that it's your favourite album of the year so far!! god help us. surely the best album has to have stronger characteristics than simply being 'fun'.

my vote: 'The Band' by 'The Band' technically a few years out of date, but i'm listening to it right now, and expect i'll still be listening to it in twenty years, something i can safely say won't be happening to the chiefs. and yes, The Band is fun!

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

well you gotta choose one of the two seeing as they have been the only releases so far

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Dead Meadow 'Feathers'

It owns all. Easily.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

is it really that good? I heard it wasn't as good as Shivering King..., which I didn't think was as good as Howls from the Hills which I didn't like as much as Dead Meadow. They smoke too much, their records are getting slower and slower.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

yeah mars volta, thought id get alot of feebk on that, i havnt heard it yet but am lookin forward to it. got the phonics album due to curiosity, actually not that bad suprisingly!

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

well sed bazaz, first gig i ever went to, stereophonics supported by feeder in 2001, always hav a special place in my heart, tho i didnt bother with the new feeder album, went for athlete instead. how is it?

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

I hesitate between the new Savoy Grand album and the Magnolia Electric co..............

...............Magnolia Electric Co.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

I forgot the 50 foot wave album !

Definitley the best album of 2005 so far.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Yes, 50 Foot Wave is incredible, and one of the best so far!!

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

brighteyes im wide awake its morning for me

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

frances the mute is only album released this year i can remember hearing. Although the new Dålek album should be pretty good

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

i need to hear more bright eyes, i really like the first day of my life

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

even though i bought it when it came out last year in america, its hands down the arcade fire album...mars volta is a letdown as was the show at brixton...kaiser chiefs is not worth the effort, bloc party is good but not mindblowing...i'm hoping that the new fantomas and eels albums will improve my opinions of this year so far...

Jamie

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Seconded Jamie re Arcade Fire.

Am looking forward to Stephen Malkmus & Jicks, Built to Spill, Broken Social Scene, Silver Jews, Of Montreal....

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

arcade fire came out last year though ... well in america, but it was on import here

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Yeah I got Arcade Fire last year on import, but technically is out this year over here :-p

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

compared to some of the recent letdowns it deserves to be the best album of last year AND this year.
anyone know if pixies are actually gonna bother doing a new record?
anyone heard anything about new records from evan dando or A.C. Newman? hopefully we'll get some new sonic youth soon too. or if not apparently there's a reissue fo goo coming out whcih if its anything like the dirty reissue should be pretty great. also heard a reissue of young americans is coming out in a month or two, wouldnt mind picking that up...
sorry i'm just typing stream of consciousness now...thats what drinking midori will do for you. bad combination of too much sugar+alcohol+internet...

Jamie

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

is the kaiser cheifs any good? i'm going to see them in april but i think they're a bit shit except for i predict a riot cos i can jump around rooms to it.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

mmmmmmpatrickwolf

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

I lobe them, am gonna see them in may... you can jump around the room like crazy pregnant ladies to basically everyone of their songs : D Download nananana

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

The Self titled album by The Others, go out and buy it folks, everyone can relate to every song. That's what we want in a band.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

yea i heard its ace, i was especially drawn to them by nme

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Yeah dude, NME is the undisputed champion of new music.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

I NO they are like total legends man, i worship them i am subscribed twice so that if i ever loose the first copy i have the spare to read

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

i have four im particularly fond of:

out hud - let us never speak ofit again
mogwai - government commisions
rufus wainwright - want two
tompaulin - into the black

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

The new Tompaulin album is indeed very good !

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

I predict that Bloc Party and the Kaiser Chiefs will be forgotten indie footnotes in a few years.

For me it's Patrick Wolf and Akron/Family.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

I don't think Bloc Party will, I think they will progress into something better & interesting a la Radiohead. You're right about the Kaisers though.

I'm intrigued by Patrick Wolf, yet equally scared to buy. Any MP3's anywhere?

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

kaisers defintely, bloc party potentially.
i think they could go on to make some really classic music.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Yep, Bloc Party definitely orgasmic. I can see the Kaisers sticking around like the way The Bluetones have releasing a few decent singles but poor albums.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

i really really don't get bloc party. i mean whats so good about them?? they are nothing new and don't even do derivative well!

i don't mind the kaisers record but they do whiff of a fad love.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Bloc Party are just so arty and are doing it for the alternatives. Kaiser Chiefs are great to dance to, but just don't get me as excited as Bloc Party.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

being 'arty' is all well and good but i just cannot see anything new, exciting or innovative in bloc party at all. ah well, each to their own :)

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Or arty. What's arty about it?
Turgid cockerney slabs of guitar.
It's total bollocks.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

cockerney whaaaaa?

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

yeah. the kaisers are a FANTASTIC singles band, but the record is just irritating and cute in all the wrong ways.

i think bloc party are quite capable of being around successfully for a long time if they play it right. they've got substance and honesty and know how to write a killer pop tune without sacrificing everything on the altar of commercial novelty.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Why do people sign off message board posts...?

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

i just do.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

The Bright Eyes albums were good.....

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

So far:

1 Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake
2 Doves - Some Cities
3 Mercury Rev - Secret Migration
4 Trail Of Dead - Worlds Apart

Will soon hear new Idlewild and BSP, so it will be interesting to see where they fit in.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

i second the trail of dead vote. it's just... wah. i have no words.

bloc party a close second though.

xxx

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Mercury Rev. Hmm. I'm gonna have to check 'em out for myself. Their name pops up often enough for me to feel foolish for never having heard them. Same with Biffy, actually.

Since Worlds Apart is only record I can think of that came out this year... that I've bought... I'll pick World's Apart. I'll say it again: Pitchfork ain't always right. ST&C would be a pretty tough act to follow, eh?!

(I bought the Fire's Funeral last year; and though I am still a big fan there are some weak tracks and it really hasn't grown on me the way I thought it might. Was an A-, now it's a B+.)

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Deserters Songs should be the first album on your Mercury Rev list.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

I'll second that... Deserters Songs is a masterpiece!!

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

For me it would have to be the following in order:

1) Funeral (Arcade Fire)
2) Golden Ocean (50 Foot Wave)
3) Silent Alarm (Bloc Party)
4) The Magnificent Duke (Marmaduke Duke)
5) The Bravery (The Bravery)*

* Is It FUCK?!?!?!?

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

When I did mine I wasn't counting Funeral as 2005 since I included it on my top ten of 2004. It would definitely be 1 or 2 on my 2005 list at the moment.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Silent Alarm by a long distance for me.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Frances the Mute is brilliant and Bright Eyes but I can't decide which album. I'm sure NME=BASTARDS would like me to say Digital Ash.... but I'm Wide Awake..... is equally compelling.

The Ministry of Sound Mash Up Mix is fun. Lots of Pistols style neon colours.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Probably; Arcade Fire, Beck, Patrick Wolf or M83

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Digital Ash In A Digital Urn, followed by Wind In The Wires, Silent Alarm and Some Cities.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Well I've probably listened to 'Outside Closer' by Hood the most, but I don't know if that makes it the best...

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Arcade fire
or
Rufus wainwright

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Take Fountain-Wedding Present or Kaisers but wedding present is the best 'comeback' album i have ever heard

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

FRANCES THE MUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's assuming 'Funeral' was last year though.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Brighteyes! by far...

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

best of 2005.
dont know.
i guess it would be eighteen visions or my chemical romance (even thought those are 2004)

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

so far
Wind in the wires
Silent Alarm
Frances the Mute
And Give Up by the Postal Service ( I know it's been out for ages but i'm slow and only got it recently and have been listening to it loads and loads and loads)

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

mayan factor 44
maximo park a certain trigger
kaddisfly buy our intention
QOTSA

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

how can you get a hold of a copy of maximo parks pre-release?

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Er, er...

Khonnor - Handwriting
The Arcade Fire - Funeral
British Sea Power - Open Season

er, er...

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

and having just heard the new Venetian Snares album, that too.

It's fucking brilliant. As good if not better than anything Squarepusher has done etc etc

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

I know the Say Anything LP hasn't been out for long, not sure if it's this year, though. Either way, it's outstanding.

The Marmaduke Duke sounds good so far, and naturally, Bloc Party is up there.

I'm wetting myself over the prospect of new albums by The Robocop Kraus and Pat Clafferty, too :)

Ian, http://www.distort-records.co.uk

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

I hope the Mae Shi album gets a release over here, thats flipping brilliant too.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Not sure who Mae Shi is, but Mae's new LP The Everglow is amazing.

I second the Mercury Rev vote.

But thumbs up also to Bloc Party, Mogwai.

Thumbs down to Idlewild (what went wrong?!).

Still not sure about Kaiser Chiefs. It's too Parklife for me.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Hey theres nothing wrong with being to parklife!

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

I'm sick of hearing the word derivative. New words please. I'm hoping A Certain Trigger will blow the rest of this lot away.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Redjetson- New General Catalogue
Dark, difficult, brooding and very, very beautiful.

Mercury Rev- The Secret Migration
Not their best, but 5 or 6 corking tracks. Worth the money just for Vermillion.

Red Sparowes- At The Soundless Dawn
Massive and moving.

Silver Mt.Zion- Horses In The Sky
Challenging in the extreme, but well worth it. Eastern European folk, campfire songs and fantastic Godspeed-y guitar freakouts.

Souvaris- I Felt Nothing At All
Was this this year? If it was, it can't be overlooked. Gorgeous, gorgeous instrumental music that trips along. Makes me feel like getting on the train and travelling for miles.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

QOTSA - just as you think you've figured it out, something else comes out and grabs you by the nads

Bloc Party (sorry for being obvious)- just a top, british album

Mors Principium Est - The Unborn - Not out for a few weeks, but has been rocking my shack constantly since i got the promo through - kinda like Killswitch but bigger and darker

Idlewild - consistently ace band, just in different ways

Open Hand - The album most people thought Josh Homme would come up with after SFTD

as for Frances The Mute, the first three tracks are spellbinding, after that the wandering bridges between songs make me lose the will to be open.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

Open Hand - You and Me. Is probably my favourite of the year so far, has certainly recieved the most plays.

M83, Mars Volta, DFA1979, Bloc Party, and LCD Soundsystem have all been great too.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

1. bright eyes - im wide awake its morning

also albums by...arcade fire, gratitude, bloc party and willy mason.
but im sure willy mason and arcade fires records have been around since the autumn.

Re: best album of 2005 so far...

i now have a new contender ...
# corrosion of conformity - in the arms of god #
surely the metal album of the year.
