but longest song to make top 3 singles (or was it no. 1?) - November Rain by Guns and Roses. Just been watching it on TMF!

Any longer songs that did so well in the charts? Not that chart success really matters, obviously. Just wondering...

It's Sleep who do Jerusalem. Matt Pike is the guitarist in both bands. Also there is another version of that song called 'Dopesmoker' that is a bit longer.

jerusalem/dopesmoker by Sleep is almost deffinately the longest song there is.... if you can even call it a song, more of an hour long drugtripping ultraheavy jam.

I once heard tell that Suede committed a 17 minute version of the Asphalt World to tape. The Orb did 'Assassin'(s?) at forty minutes, Mogwai did a live version 'My Father, the King' that was a bit longer than that... but 'Jerusalem' has to be the longest single track I know of.

The first track on Goldie's Saturnz Return album is over 60 minutes long. It's an orchestral/drum n bass tribute to his mother, called 'Mother'.

It's absolute bumwank.

apparently on the original version of the hip hop classic "The Symphony" by the Juice Crew, Kool G Rap rapped for so long the reel broke when it ran out and they had to do it all again! That means he basically kept going for about 15 minutes.

I read somewhere about a minimalist composition involving 4 violinists, each would play a four note pattern about eighteen times, and they would all alternate and repeat this for eighteen hours. It was supposed to induce some kind of higher understanding about music I think.

Didn't Can intend Monster Movie to be one 24 hour track? I'm not sure if they actually made it though.

And isnt John Cage's 4.33 really infinite?

Think we've got a winner...

Chris Butler, formerly of The Waitresses, has a 69 minute song - The Devil Glitch. He's also recorded a 45 without electricity or mics on 100-year-old wax cylinders. And yes, I did use Google to find that info.

Anyone remember the Waitresses? Great band.

hmm, i know Boris have a song thats 70 minutes long.
on m83's '0078h' single there was a 70 minute track, but 60 minutes of it was silence so i guess that doesnt count.
and personally i wouldnt count any song on 'skinny fists' or 'f#a#' by GYB!, as they are made up of different parts

There's a composer called Jem Finer who's written a piece of music that's a thousand years long. It's being played somewhere in London, and won't finish til New Year's Eve 2999.

And there's a group of monks in Germany who're in the process of singing a piece of music that lasts for about 500 years. They swap round every 6 hours or so and have a break whilst some new monks take over.

I've written a song that lasts for infinity, however. I did it using a microphone, a guitar and a delay pedal. It'll go on forever. Or until a power cut.

I have a tune by the Rollins Band that lasts: 1hr 15mins 23secs!! It is called 'No Thanks' and is done live to a (i think) live audience!?! I has casual Henry banter for lyrics and the slowest stoner rock feel to it possible!

November Rain GNRoses is fairly long aswell - perhaps too long?
