1) So who is going to these? I am going to both.

2) Who are you looking forward to seeing the most? Its Howling Bells on tuesday and the dears on wednesday for me.

3) Howling Bells are supposed to have VERY special guests. Who do you reckon it'll be? I haven't got a clue.

well Simon Raymonde

of cocteau twins/bella union is gonna be playing something/with someone at some point, so maybe he's playing some stuff with them?

i predict

howling bells covering cocteau twins

yeh

i'm actually really tempted to go..my girlfriend is away in brighton on business... thing is it costs me £40 to travel to london for midweek gigs so its hard to justify :-(

The tickets are so reasonable as well

great seats for £15.

Pull a sicky and stay in London on tuesday night. Sarky said you could crash at hers.

i bet she did.

hmm i'll have a think about the logistics of it, there's still lots of seats...

ah go on

i saw Kissaway Trail

at roskilde, pretty dire stuff, wimp rock

i sold my ticket for Tuesday

because I'm seeing Justin Timberlake instead. Ha.

Only wanted to see beach house anyway and they're playing their own gig now.

:O

SO JEALOUS

too right

you are

Special guests...

I got a competition email through from bella union saying that Tom from editors was gonna be playing the howling bells night ? ? ?

I dunno...

I got that from a competition email... can any one else shed any light?

oh ffs

Does...

..anyone know if there are anymore ? ?

Solo Bass and free-improvising sax... can you find better on a week next monday ?

they're meant to be a bit crap live

well, obviously good, but no chemistry at all.

yep thats correct

there was something mentioned on Editors' message board about it

plus they go way back! howling bells opened for them before they even had a single out.

I am at both

And DJing.
Yeah.

Special guests...??

There are four bands each night, all announced.

howling bells

are said to be playing with very special guests.

Oh, I see...

Dunno.

I'm not having that

what a letdown. Oh well, it will be a lowpoint of an otherwise great evening.

Don't we have really good seats?

metro

says it is tom from editors tonight playing with the howlers; and magic numbers' romeo and paul weller tomorrow as guests.

FFS

HAHAHA

*relieved*

Rather tonight than tomorrow though surely?

Magic numbers and Paul weller? They'll right royally fuck up

Brilliant

the cunt can get me a pint.

be

warned that the new-look RFH doesn't have pints anymore upstairs. It's large plastic bottles of Fosters or nothing. And you also need to get 'pass-out' tickets when you go in and out of the auditorium, which is FRUSTRATING.

i'm going tonight!

yay.

only going to see HB though.

just saw on BU website:

if you buy any 2 cds by artists playing tonight and tomorrow before 3pm today via bella union site - you get free ticket to either gig.

so i presume you could buy 2 cd singles for around £4 combined and get entry.

and to think i spent £17 on my ticket. hhhmmmph.

here's the note on the website:
its now just a matter of hours until us folk at Bella Union kick off our 10th year anniversary celebrations. So we thought we’d give you one last chance to WIN yourselves some free tickets to either one of our spectacular nights.

How? It’s simple.

All you have to do is purchase two CDs by any one of our acts appearing on either one of our celebratory nights and you will be entitled to your free ticket! So that’s two CDs your CD collection is aching to home by any one of our acts on either bill.

However, get in there quick! In order for you to obtain your free ticket you must purchase your CD before 3pm on Tuesday 10th. Once your transaction has been processed, you can email Silvia at silvia@bellaunion.com to confirm and choose which night you wish to attend. Your tickets will then be waiting for you at Royal Festival Hall and the celebrations will begin.

We know it's hard to choose between either night...both are set to be fantastic from start to finish so maybe buy two more CDs and attend both? It makes perfect sense!

I saw this

bunch of cunts

why didn't i see this?

i would have gone tonight too for the price of two cds :(

I assumed you knew

I should have told you last night.

Last Night

was excellent! We caught the last 4 songs of Beach House's set, and I was impressed with what I heard. My latest Novel were absoloutely fantastic, I will definitely be checking them out again. Fionn Regan kept the quality high with a good set, although I think he had to be coaxed out to do one more song as he left earlier than he was supposed to. Whilst Howling Bells were probably the least enjoyable, they were still very solid. Juanita has an amazing voice. Tome from editors came out and did 'Where the wild roses grow', whicgh was suprisingly good, and the night finished with members of all 4 bands playing a Johnny Cash song, with Raymond from the cocteau twins on piano.

My only gripe is that the place was half empty! there were only about 6 people in the balcony.

can

you remember the set times? i'm going tonight and don't want to miss k/trail.

stage times

Beach house were on a bit after 7:30, played for about half an hour, MLN maybe 8:15ish, same kind of set length, then an interval before Fionn Regan and Howling Bells - whole thing ended about 10:45.

I'd say "half-full" is an overstatement - I nabbed an empty box half-way through and from there it looked like the place was only about one-third full - hardly anyone in the rear stalls or balcony. Real shame, because it was a good gig.

we were on the front row of the balcony

and it was empty. It wasn't promoted that well in my opinion, and EITS pulling out really hurt it.

ta

if you look on the RFH website at available seats - it looks like tonight has sold relatively well

It was a good night indeed

even though I was slightly dissapointed with Beach House as they became a bit dull and samey after a while (I saw the whole set). My Latest Novel were brilliant, they played a lot of new songs that sounded a bit darker than the stuff from their debut album. Fionn Regan is obviously a very talented guitarist and songwriter in a Dylan kind of way, but he does like to stretch his songs a bit too far sometimes. I really enjoyed Howling Bells, very powerful and noisy with a gothic twang here and there. The chsoen covers fitted in well with the rest of the set, even though the guy from My Latest Novel was struggling with the lyrics.

Paul Morley's intermezzos were a bit pointless and didn't really contribute anything other than unwelcome delays, and a comic genius he is not.

can I add to this?

I thoroughly enjoyed the music inbetween acts last night. Avenging angels!

so many good tunes!

i really enjoyed howling bells having heard nothing by them previously, though kinda glad it was a short set. The covers were great though.

My Latest Novel get better and better each time I see them, and the new stuff sounded as good if not better, in a huge venue as it did in the spitz a few months ago.

It was

just so wrong.

last

night's Bella Union show was great. Stephanie Dosen was superb, with Simon Raymonde and drummer from Midlake in her band. Kissaway Trail matched the energy on their LP - and didn't seem to want to correct Paul Morley for calling them the Faraway Trail.

Dears were as tedious as the last 2 times I've seen them. OK, he has a good voice and sounds like Mozza, but the music is SO bland. Surely the first band to be dropped from Bella Union. (Please).

Midlake were terrific - great version of the one they do with the Chemical Bros. Romeo from Magic Numbers guesting on Roscoe was a complete waste of time. He did nothing. Paul Weller on Young Bride was interesting, but I've no respect for the man since his appearance with Coxon on J.Ross show doing a pub-band song. Head Home was fantastic.

Loads of people there too - didn't see up in the balcony, but downstairs was pretty much packed out.

a few points as to above:

I think more people saw stephanie dosen last night than the 4 bands on tuesday.

You appear to have got the dears and midlake mixed up. Midlake were pretty damn bland last night.

Did you get one of the screen prints? I did, they are amazing.

i

thought midlake were far from bland.

screen prints looked great - but are they becoming two-a-penny, these gig-type arty posters now?

I must say

its the first time I have seen them being done at gigs. I may frame mine, its gorgeous.

true

it's the first time i've physically seen them being printed at a gig - quite impressive it was too!

yeah

they were ready when midlake finished. £10 was fairly reasonable as well.

£20?

no

£10 is what I paid for my print.
