I'm looking for the music equivalent of a gateway drug. You can't just throw Neutral Milk at someone that's been listening to commercial radio their entire life and expect them to like it, or can you? Can anyone recommend an album that has been well received?
I dunno,
my sister likes 'commercial' stuff, and she said she really liked NMH when I was playing them.
Is it really any of your business what this person listens to, anyway? Can't they just be happy listening to what they want to? It's pretty snotty to consider a person's taste inferior just because it's not your's...
Wow...
That's dangerous ground to tread there...
The idea that music is for enjoying and whether it's shit or not isn't always the point. :-P *shock*
You're right.
But yeah, I'd say Neutral Milk Hotel can appeal to a surprising amount of "commercial listeners".
oh come on
don't pretend you are totally without musical prejudice lol
i tend to go for the VU as a means for conversion anyway, get them stoned and put on venus in furs.
I'm not pretending to be anything.
and fair enough if you want to share some music that you really like with someone else. but this is different. They are basically trying to force their tastes on another person because they deem their personal taste 'unworthy', or something.
Yeah, I CAN be a bit of a snob at times, but at least I remember that not everyone is on some sacred journey to find THE BEST MUSIC EVAR, and not everyone has the same taste. The original poster seems to have forgotten that completely.
sorry for the overkill of 'taste', there...
i think people have a right to be derogator about other people's taste
i don't buy the "everythings subjective" argument that often gets trotted out in the discussion of music. Some things are just better than other things, and though pointing out to people the disdain you have for their music can sometimes be twattish (not that its ever stopped me)its perfectly reasonable to consider some people as having worse tastes than others
And though trying to force your tastes on other people is even more twattish than merely deriding them, if you know a person and know what sort of music they like you can probably find parallels within the world of good music. If they like a good beat, give them that, if they like 'emotional' lyrics give them that. Or at least start off that way
So to answer the original question, it depends on the person you're trying to indoctrinate
I agree with you.
Her attitude just annoyed me, is all.
schweet
Funeral
is what ruined my musical life forever. That and Apologies to the Queen Mary by Wolf Parade.
I think it's best to do a mixtape..
Put the most easy listening tracks of lots of different albums together so theres a olt of variety and wait for a 'I like this' and then stick that album on.
you're 29
get over it.
After that (exhaustive but fascinating) Steve Albini q&a
he said something along the lines, "Music is not a spectator sport." Something like that. If they have to have music shoved in front of them... you're probably wasting your time.
But I sympathize. I have one of these friends who says "yeah, turn me onto some great music" and then I get excited because I'm a music dork... but then I realize it'll just end up being shit for both of us.
You're better off sticking with us. Non-music dorks are lame.
Haha.
Yes. The outside world where all things are mainstream is scary. Don't go out there and stay here with us :-P.
Although just to put in some more of my view... Someone mentioned Funeral. I'd have to agree there. You can hook anyone on that. Well. Anyone with SOME taste.
