I just made the best mountain goats compilation ever taking two tracks from every album and there's no week points.
He started off doing really lo-fi stuff just recorded on a tape recorder, the new stuff has more instruments but not as many instantly brilliant lyrics (deeper rather than brilliant one liners).
All Hail West Texas is my favourite but if you can track down protein source of the future now! bitter melon farm or Ghana they're great compilations of his early material.
Most people hear Tallahassee first and it's got 2 of his best songs on there but I think the rest of it is a bit too hard to get at.
So I say All Hail West Texas, one of the compilations or maybe The Sunset Tree for a newer one if you want a cleaner sound.
I love her first two albums. She can talk disgusting low life sex in a way most woman (apart from PJ perhaps) just sound lame. Maybe the S-K chicks too, even if they're more lesbo. But yeah, LP used to rule the roost!
It depends on what you are most likely to enjoy. Male or female tend to be completely different and the sound is often influenced by a particular genre.
Richard Hawley is very easy on the ear in a pop fashion
Dan Sartain is rock on the verge of punk
Howie Beck has a country sound but does sing country songs
Tom Brousseau sings wonderfully desolate songs witha voice you may learn to love.

don't get the fuss about ryan adams. he always seems kind of 'Adult Orientated Rock' to me. i don't dislike him or think he's bad, i just don't get why people seem to rave about him.
hehe...fair enough. He's not great though. The only thing he's got over 'the greats' is that he's about now...I think people pay way too much attention to stuff about now just cos the people making it aren't dead!
AOR? I could understand people calling Ryan many things, but not AOR...unless all you've heard is Gold, which would be more understandable (though don't get me wrong, I think it's a great album, but no Heartbreaker or Cold Roses). Hmmm. Takes all sorts eh.
well, how do you think he compares with some of the seventies alt country pioneers then. I'm thinking specifically of Gene Clark...its really difficult for me to listen to other alt country stuff because I'm a big fan of his stuff, and its basically a hundred times better than every other alt country singer songwriter I've ever heard.

if you count Shara Worden without her band... shes amazing!
nobody's mentioned Martha Wainwright?
Howling Willy Cunt
...was one of the unsung c(o)untry greats.
For some inexplicable reason he never really troubled the upper reaches of the hit parade and radio airplay was not forthcoming.
Luckily his lost recordings were recently rediscovered...........

don't get the fuss about ryan adams. he always seems kind of 'Adult Orientated Rock' to me. i don't dislike him or think he's bad, i just don't get why people seem to rave about him.
'cos they like adult orientated rock?
you
might be onto something...
because i'm emo.

^this...he is piss poor, all false emotion and irony
IMO
you're talking bullshit.
bf
hehe...fair enough. He's not great though. The only thing he's got over 'the greats' is that he's about now...I think people pay way too much attention to stuff about now just cos the people making it aren't dead!
How much have you heard?
I'm a big fan and obviously biased in favor of him, but I can see your point in some respects.
He is very very prolific and can pretty much write a song on request. This can be seen as you said 'false emotion and irony'
If you haven't heard it try listening to Dear Chicago or Dance All Night.
We might not agree anyway, cos I love Gram and you....well don't.
x
anyone who isn't affected in some way by 'dear chicago'
actually has no soul.
no, really.
bf
I haven't heard that, or much by him in fairness, but what I have heard left me cold.
I don't believe him.
interesting

Erm, a fellow
called Bob Dylan?
Where should I start with elliot smith?
I've been wanting to listen to him for a while. Which album do people recommend?
I just heard a tom brosseau track on fat cat sampler and loved it.
What sort of stuff do you like?
Go for "Either/Or" for Sparse Acoustic stuff
"Figure 8" for more produced stuff with more instruments
"From a Basement on a Hill" for both.
either/or
Either/Or
I was about to do that
but you beat me
Why has no-one mentioned Joni Mitchell or Neil Young

what about..
Thanksgiving / Adrian Orange?
And also Winston Echo.
JOSH ROUSE

oh fun
...oh wait. having undertaken to do this, this is too hard. a song from every album, then:
New York New York (Gold) (shut up, purists, it's a tune and you know it)
Oh My Sweet Carolina (Heartbreaker) - though really anything off that album, it's truly a classic.
Dear Chicago (Demolition)
So Alive (Rock n Roll)
I See Monsters (Love Is Hell)
Let It Ride (Cold Roses)
The End (Jacksonville City Nights)
Blue Sky Blues (29)
The Sun Also Sets (Easy Tiger)
...should do you nicely. Alternatively, just get Heartbreaker and let the love affair begin.
