New Young Pony Club, Maps, Fion Reagan (?), Arctic Monkeys, Young Knives, Jamie T, Bat For Lashes, Klaxons, The View, Amy Winehouse, Baskiat Strings (?) and Dizee Rascal..

So horribly predictable.

yuck

bored of mercurys.

the view? the fucking view?

Shocking

That is as worse a list as I have ever seen for this award.

Time to pick a winner: The View

I can't see them giving to either Dizzee or the 'Monkeys again. Those two are almost 'wasted' nominations.

No

The View cannot and will not win. It would be a fucking joke if they won. They are just third rate rip off merchants (see "Fratellis")

i'd love

Maps to win but i can see them giving it to Bat For Lashes. Actually i wouldn't mind that, as long as the view don't win.

Well, not that predictable

For one, New Young Pony Club? Really?

You wouldn't call the Young Knives expected either.

Time to check XRRF

For some good old slagging! :D

Who are Maps?

maps, klaxons or jamie t

bats for lashes as an outside bet.

Ther mercurys also attach onto whatever is cool eg when roni size or ms dynamite and as the whole world has gone "neon" you gotta fancy the klaxons really

personally would like to see bats for lashes win tho.

not expected:

new young...maps, fion regan, young knives, baskiat strings. Maybe YK a bit.

But isn't

the Young Knives album really old, and not very much cop?

I thought the Young Knives came out the year before

Based on this how come Bloc Party got shunned? it's not amazing but surely as a body of work it is more substantial than The View...I

I think it'll be

Klaxons, as their influence has been beyond music and into fashion and culture this year - although I don't know what criteria the judges use to decide who wins, it seems fairly arbitrary to me?

my god

what an awful boring year for british music eh? by the standards of the supposed best anyway

agreed

The USA and Canada (and er...everywhere really) leaves the UK way behind in the last year or so.

One thing's for certain

Whoever wins this will be having a great honour invested upon them.

I swear these

get worse every year.

hah

good to see Maps got on there. really hope he wins.

y'know

you have to pay to be eligible for the Mercury prize?

So hopefully any good British bands of the last year didn't agree with forking out.

I think it's £60...

...silly argument. IMHO, of course.

oh really?

i assumed it was more than that. It's still totally lame that if you don't pay money you can't win the award.

all good bands don't have £60 spare

they spent it all on guitars.

Don't

the record company pay for most of the list's entry fees? Remember Gorillaz getting nominated and Albarn withdrawing them.

damon albarn

did a radio take over thing, and out of the hour of songs, every third song was a gorillaz/gbandtq/blur song, so it's suprising he would shun more publicity/back patting. It shows how much he hates the Mercury prize I guess.
My sister used to be in love with damon albarn, in 1997 or such.

I suppose

getting passed over in favour of M People can scar a man for life

do you really?!

thats ridiculous, non?
how much is it?

I think it's £60

I thought it was £200

plus enough copies of the cd for all the judges and people involved in the awards.

Wikipedia says:

"The Mercury Prize, currently known as the Nationwide Mercury Prize for sponsorship reasons, is an annual music prize awarded for the best British or Irish album of the previous 12 months."
so, yes he is, but he's still eligible.

It should be the Brakes album

it just came to me

who is the token jazz entry?

+ I hope Klaxons win

fucking retarded

could it get any more predictably shit?

Token jazz (Basquiat Strings) no chance. Token urban has already won, and if he wins again it'll be a fucking travesty. Same with the Arctic Monkeys

The rest are just typical NME/Q fodder. Were there really no better UK albums last year? I find that hard to believe. But then i suppose they want their big exposure, so flavour of the month shite it is then

Terrible, terrible shortlist

i love the bat for lashes album

probably my favourite of the past year. Fionn Regan's album is good too - I'd say very good but not great. Don't own any of the other albums... bit meh, as they say.

NYPC

album only came out last week didnt it?

FIONN!

get in!

go visit his website ;-)

www.fionnregan.com

the that pony club album has been around a while

it`s only because of that advert they are populer

A while

apparently now meaning 'eight days'.

NO HORRORS!!

I'm shocked.

that's the last thing

this already embarrassingly dire list needs, more style-over-substance pap.

The Horrors album

is genuinely great.

no biffy

either would of thought they might of got on it. it would be a joke if the view or jamie t won it theyre both shiote

At least

The Twang didn't get nominated

probably not released

in time, expect it next year eh. ;->

the artic monkeys should win.

they're album is amazing. i dont htink they will tho. klaxons could win. their album is amazing as well. these are the two best albums i've heard in 5 years.

3 songs on the young knives album are amazing, but the album isnt that great.

It's not as bad as American's Grammys

which winning is almost a dishonor.

Amy Winehouse will win and everyone will regret it when she accepts the award and slags off the other nominies. Americans will quietly giggle at the spectacle.

Fionn? No Q-mark, it's a wonderful album

So subtle with its relationship to nature. Stunning.

this is the biggest

foregon conclusion ever...

amy winehouse will win

oh wicked. what a load of shite. mark ronson is a balls producer. One thought goes through his mind when making a track;

"ooh, lets put some brass on there!" Then it will sound just like tower of power or some other proto-acid-jazz legends

foregone

I should say

Pretty bad

I thought Fionn Reagan wasn't British though. Hm...

And Klaxons deserve to win.

Irish act on British label

= Eligible

you are all so contemptuous

towards all the bands who seemingly have mainstreamed some genres ie winehouse, jamie t to a certain extent, etc

but surely thats what this award is about.
you are right that its a bit tokenistic, but mainly those albums are all pretty good, the ones ive heard
the view however, shit.

i think we should at least be thankful the other shitty nme bands didnt get it who seem to have such popularity atm-
the twang, the enemy
agh!
i think the best argument about jamie t, winehouse, klaxons is that they have shown universal appeal pretty much, theres not many magazines knocking them and i do think they are sorta cleverer than the bands like the view ect who ride on the NMEs coatails for recognition.

it's

open to british aand irish artists

I hope this means Basquiat Strings gets some recognition

outside of the jazz circles now. It's about time.
