If someone had said to me this time last year that I'd be singing the praises of this lot I'd have laughed at them, but they are quite frankly the best band in Nottingham at this moment in time, and last night's DiS set was one of the best 30 minutes I've seen this year.
Awesome.
210
210!
210!
These guys are quality, especially live!
this is madness
i've seen them myself and it was horrid!
Funny that
Saw them in February and it was the most dire half an hour of cock swinging, ego filled, stereophonics influenced tripe that Ive ever had the mis fortune to witness.
I was absolutely stunned when I saw them on a DIS night, but then I suppose they're from Nottingham, and so is the vast majority of DIS.
Ain't what you know, it's who you blow.
Stereophonics?
I don't hear that at all.
About two years ago I would have said there was an element of Oasisy dadrock about them but they've got a new guitarist and drummer, been in the studio with Doggen Spiritualized and Chris Olley (6x7) and turned into something quite spectacular. Really.
hhmmmm
What's wrong with having an ego or is it just misjudgment???? What about just plain confidence in your own ability.
It is amazing the transformation of this group!
misjudgement i reckon
on the strengh of our past demos the above have a point...but ego? were all decent lads the only place any of our cocks are going/have been is up his missis arse
genuine freakshow
i saw that blokes band anyway we played with them at the loft(cambridge) bunch of upper class crusties. playing funk but no one moved about cos they were shit lol....
Jealousy
will get you nowhere folks, trust me...
jealousy?
funk?
No
the funk troupe seem to be envious of Mint Ive, hence the petty riposte from Siberguy above.
The...
...General has spoken!
gimps
these guys for real.got a flyer for there night for d.i.s so checked em out they smashed it.
how can you argue the point
Rule number 1
Don't slag off other bands who've blown you offstage under a pseudonym and expect to get away with it.
And no, all of DiS aren't from Nottingham! I'm sure Diver et al would be mightily offended at the mere thought....
Gimps (what?)
Just because I am from Nottingham it is held against me for being excited that there is finally something good coming out of this city on the music scene!!!
Grow Up.
Hmmm
I think you'll find the gimps comment was aimed at the funk troupe from Cambridge, as ojelasty quite possibly plays bass for a certain band from Notts...?
With regards to...
The Loft in Cambridge - no we didn't play with you there General, we played with you in Manchester.
Funk - the band im in certainly are not, never have been and never will be anything relating to funk. Perhaps you have confused us with a band at your Cambridge gig.
Having an opinion - I expressed mine. Im sorry that you disagree Dom, but hundreds of bands are slagged off on here everyday without an eyelid being battered. But you seem to care an awful lot about Mint Ive, in a way that arouses even further my suspicion that you are in some way connected with this band...but then Ive always liked a good conspiracy. Maybe you just generally think they are good, but this leads me to my next point...
Mint Ive - when I saw them (and it was only in February), they really were very far away from being music that I could imagine ANYONE on the DIS team championing. Hence...
Jelousy - No jelousy, just disillusionment. How could this band (who appeared to me to be DIS targets for a slapping) be making the DIS club night and having one of the head honcho's tell everyone how good they were? Which, again, lead me to my conpiracy theories.
Siberguy
as I've already stated elsewhere in this thread, Mint Ive have developed way beyond many people's wildest expectations over the past year or so. Granted, they have a past but that's exactly where it belongs, in the past.
I have no more of a connection with the band other than they originate from my city of residence in the same way a writer from London may champion someone from their backyard.
There is certainly no conspiracy going on here. Look through the archive of bands who've played DiS nights. There is no "DiS style" or "sound". If anything we tend to be too eclectic for own good (sometimes) but I guess that's the whole point, to take risks in the name of promoting good music.
Fair enough
I dont think of DIS of having a genre specific "sound", but I do think of DIS being associated with a style - that being one of originality and inventiveness. Hence why I was so shocked to see "Oasisy dadrock" (your words, my experience) getting such a good rapor on here. Because we all know that Oasisy Dadrock is neither original nor inventive.
But as you admit, Mint Ive have a "past" and because my only experience of them was what I saw back in February, my opinion was based on that alone. But despite them not floating my boat musically, they were pleasant enough people off stage, so perhaps Ill give them a second chance based on your good praise. Maybe Ill be pleasantly suprised by the new stuff, like yourself.
Ill also drop the consiracy theories. Except for my new one about Gordon Brown installing a rain on/off button in his office so that he can look like the hero when he saves us all from our impending watery graves.
Don't mention
Gordon Brown, pllllease. His name is mud round these parts. Seriously...
i just listened to their myspace page
if they're the best band in nottingham i'd hate to have to listen to the worst.
really fucking terrible.
i'm going to go for a lie down.
Re: the MySpace page
Those demos were recorded a good 18 months ago and in no way reflect the band's current direction, although a couple of those songs do feature in their live set.
Best band in Notts?
Most definitely not. Not when you have bands like You Slut!, Love Ends Disaster, Felix, The Recovery, Lords, Souvaris...need I go on?
I saw them pretty recently at a Farm Yard night and they were good, yes. Nothing special though. Certainly not enough to warrant a 'best band in Nottingham' title.
im intrigued to see them now.
though claiming the support of spiritualized on their fliers is a bit cheeky.
i find it hard to believe pierce credits doggen as a full blown band member. i bet he's on the salaried, no credible input approached as were the six guitarists who preceded him. (messers refoy, cowan, coxon, mooney, hart, hale).
I think in terms of
progress, as in where Mint Ive were then (2005, when I first saw them) and where they are now they are possibly the best band in the city. They certainly seem to have the biggest fanbase and in my opinion, the greatest potential to breakthrough on a wider scale.
That's not being detrimental to any of the other bands you've mentioned, all of whom I think are great in their own right and most of whom have played/will be playing a DiS night.
Doggen + Spiritualized
Not really cheeky as i have met jason on several occasions(even sharing his rider and a spare bed in a hotel room) granted he is the mainstay in the band but in doggen he has one of the most talented guitarists(and a fine hammond player)
they are one of our biggest influences 3 members hailing from notts......
and to be fair its not our ambition to be Nottinghams best band........and yes there are some great bands in this town but its nice to see dom backing a band from notts i dont mind being shot down music is my life....... ;-)
aha the spaceman.
theres no doubting doggen is a good guitarist, all his predecessors have been top notch (although perhaps jason doesnt mention that john coxon was the man behind betty boo's records).
Each to their own I guess...
...although I don't think how big a fanbase is should determine how good they are. Mentioning no names as not to offend but there are many a band in Notts who seem to have a big following and absolutely nothing original or exciting about them.
To be fair, I've only seen Mint Ive once and each gig is different so whilst a band might impress on one night they could disappoint on others. So it can be a difficult thing to determine...anyway, come to Rescue Rooms on the 25th Oct for the oxjam all dayer! You Slut! and Love Ends Disaster are playing for us.
topic
i dont know. i hate using the word 'best'.
id probably say on record id choose lords or souvaris over mint ive, but as dom stated they were off the chart in mansfield and always put on a great show.
plus really supportive of the nottingham scene, and get on great with other bands, which is more of an attraction for me when putting on a band than one that just brings a crowd who fuck off after they have played.
after all this
mint ive
(with public relations exercise, meet me in st louis, her name is calla & das disko dj's).

haha
mint ive are truely awful,
acoustically and otherwise, and especially when he drags that flag out and starts swaying it at the end.
good music this is not.
So what is
"good music" then?
iwacs and the locust apparently
hard to disagree with him, but i still like mint ive
argh
The worst thing is a band that fuck off after they have played! I post something about this before though and most people seemed to disagree with me. I just think if you teuly love music you'd stick around and watch the other bands.
It's called a lack of respect
At the end of the day whether people like it or not, an unsigned/unknown band should be using showcase gigs with other bands as a way of networking in terms of getting other shows in other towns and cities, even if every band isn't to your personal listening taste.
The thing is, it's normally these type of people who then hassle you at the end of their set for money, even though there's 2 more bands to go on and people are still coming into the venue.
Fair point, but..
We stick around to see every band (with a few obvious exceptions) we play with. Unfortunately, we often have to get our gear back to our lockup before a certain time, and as the designated driver muggins here misses a lot of bands (gutted about missing Nephu Huzzband the other week).
With regards the Notts scene, it's each to their own I suppose. Mint Ive are always in the practice room and are clearly hard-working and committed to what they do. They've also plenty of fans, which can't just be coincidence! Souvaris are great, but hardly comparable to Mint Ive in terms of genre/audience etc..
Thanks for the mention, default_this, you are kings (and a queen) amongst us.
Oh...
..and the only bands that hassle for money are the shit ones.
Or maybe we're just polite.
Think we see payment as a nice surprise! We certainly don't expect it!
ideally
a band always would stick about.
we always try and watch other band's sets, but often we have to leave after we've played just so we can get back home before 4 am and get some sleep before we have to get up again in the morning...
exactly..
..cotty. This is just the way it is for unsigned bands.
Ok, if the members of a band've been cocks all night and then piss off before you play, you're probably right to curse their good name.
But if they're nice people they've almost certainly got a very good reason for leaving.
