this thread has been inspired by the truly amazing experience i had on wednesday! went to a shop in Brum called "tempest"- a really good music store. and picked up some random experimental albums with obviously the intention of using my earth pounds to buy them. but they didn't have one of them (only the cases were on display, the actual discs in drawers), so i got the other for free!!!!! would have cost me £14!!!!! im so impressed with myself! wow! wow! wow! ....
can anyone beat that? i put it to you as a nation of reasonably priced music lovers!
(i am aware that this has pleased me a little bit too much, but i am normally really unlucky!)

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

I love that record store. They let me buy some albums before the release date and they have so many American bands you can't get over here. I don't think they are the cheapest though. Selectadisc in nottingham is the best store ever. they have a great hardcore section.

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

Tempest is fantastic. Only been in it once but they had tonnes of stuff and the guys working their knew their shit.

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

I live in Birmingham, please supply the address of said store, thanks

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

Isn't Tempest the one opposite Virgin? That's ace. I talked to the chap in there for ages about Boards of Canada and Sub Pop back in the day. Ahhh, great store.

Swordfish is cool as well. I may have got those two muddled up though, it's been ages since I was last in Brum.

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

Yeah tempest is opposite virgin/the square peg.

Pretty easy to find.

Oh and officially its on upper bull street.

The other decent record store in brum is swordfish on temple row (off new street)

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

My friend got one of the old Ladytron albums from the library for £1.50. Does that count? He was pretty impressed - it's apparently selling for about 10 times that on Ebay.

I like Vinyl Exchange in Manchester. I got one of their bargain bags (40 random singles, it was at the time) for £5, and discovered the wonderfulness of Chikinki and The Chap from it, to name but two.

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

In HMV, there's a Joy Division album for a 5iver called Substance which I'm going to buy tomorrow, after being told if I love Interpol, I should like JD. Only heard Love will tear us apart though.

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

I got Super Furry Animals' 'Phantom Power' special limited edition cardboard gatefold packaging type thing for £3.99 from one of the big music chains.

It was ridiculous, in that the limited edition packaging, which is much more appealing than the normal CD case, was £10 cheaper AND ON THE SAME SHELF, RIGHT BESIDE THE OTHER.

I still can't belive it.

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

Listen to Unknown Pleasures before substance.

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

in london at the various exchange places, theyve had the masterful lucky dip bags with 10 cd singles or 40 7"s for a quid.
i think theyve stopped now, but i wish id been into 7"s at teh time, woulda been proper bo i tell thee.

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

I managed to get OK Computer, Kid A and Hail to the Thief for £2.50 each in my local Oxfam shop. Really great condition too, looked like they'd never been played.

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

i got blondie's greatest hits, kate bush's hounds of love, NOW 10 and NOW 12, all on tape for 80p at the local thrift shop.
BARGAIN.

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

Tempest is a good shop, but you can easily recoup your train fare to Nottingham in bargains if you go the wonderful Selectadisc (which of course justifies spending tons of money when you get there). Wish I worked there...

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

What really pisses me off is the price that people have to pay for albums that are old. For example in HMV the other day i saw Origin Of Symmetry by Muse for £16.99 when i'd got it for nearly have that price when it came out. Also theres really crap albums like Papa Roach still around £15. Having said that Hmv do great prices for newer albums. I got Greenday, Franz Ferdinand and Razorlight all for £8 each and Grace by Jeff Buckley for £6!

Re: Cd bargains!!!!

grace, new??
