also, buy You're Living All Over Me.
and then see them live.
and then be like "woah, J Mascis is totally rad and stuff" and wish you were a 42 year old with steel grey hair to your waist who plays guitar like neil young cross with thurston moore.
it is easily the best album since Bug. Some of the overdubbed solos are horrendous, but then you have to look past that, it's an inevitability that he'll do them. Kind of like having a really hot girlfriend who picks her nose - just got to deal with it.
You're Living All Over Me is one of the best albums of all time, just absolute perfection. None of the other albums are anywhere near as good. This is a much visited argument here, and it is true, the other albums don't come anywhere near. Anyone who sings the praises of Green Mind or Where You Been, and even more those who say they are better than You're Living All Over Me are actually mental / stupid.
Where you been has some of my favourite songs by any band ever.
Start Choppin, Goin Home, So What Else is New, Drawerings, Not the same...
Brilliant. Amazing, amazing album. One of my top 10 of all time. I have it on tape and still listen to it probably once every couple of weeks. I can understand why people prefer You're Living All Over Me, but that's a matter of taste. To claim Where You Been isn't a great album, THAT's mental.
i find it difficult to compare though, because if J had had the budget, YLAOM would've sounded completely different. look at how much cleaner Bug and the successive albums were, he clearly wanted to go for a much more polished sound even back then.
is obviously the best but green mind and where you been have their place and I can understand how some people can prefer them because they are more songy
but to me, it's like comparing the 1970 Brazil world cup squad with the 2007 Spurs squad.
Spurs have some good players, but would anyone really honestly try and argue that they are better? Maybe so, but surely they wouldn't argue it in a way that they actually putting it forward as gospel due to fear of looking a bit silly?
I can't see why people can't see music in a similar light. There is a reason YLAOM got rave reviews from the credible music press and Green Mind didn't.
Of course, [the person who asked for recommendations] may prefer Green Mind after all, you know, a lot of people love chips but don't really like potatoes, but it really isn't as good an album, as important a piece of music. Music journalism exists for a reason, otherwise it would just be a load of needless opinion that nobody would trust, there has to be some level of "truth" about music to some degree.
Anyway, don't really want to start up this kind of argument so I'll shut up. But I probably already have.
For the record, I think both Green Mind and Where You Been are, in the grand scheme of things, decent enough albums. But the problem I have with them is that they are nowhere near fulfilling J Mascis' potential and I REALLY hate that.
I dont care some of my favourite dinosaur jr songs are on green mind and where you been. I actually really like green minds slick production and lack of murk it is a perfect summer album.
so scared of buying Beyond. So, so scared. If I even listen to it I fear that my ears will fall off or something. If it isn't the best album I have ever, ever heard then I think I would have to become a hermit.
Anyway...
Green Mind
Bug
Fossils
You're Living All Over Me
Where You Been
though every single one of them is a joy to behold
It's very underrated. I wish I had it on red vinyl.
You forgot 'water'. I love that song. Like I say, I really, really like Green Mind! In fact, if it wasn't for freak scene, it would claim third place from Bug, f'sure!
love Dino Jr arguments. If you can call them arguments. If Where You Been were the only album that I was ever allowed to listen to again, I wouldn't be unhappy
*hi-jacks thread*
Dino jr- where to start?
Everyone will say:
'You're living all over me'.
I say 'where you been'.
You will listen to them. I'll still be right.
Or not.
Both are wonderful, wonderful albums.
didnt you ask this before?
if so, we told you before, You're Living All Over Me.
if not,
You're Living All Over Me
I don't remember asking before
but thanks dudez.
no worries
also, buy You're Living All Over Me.
and then see them live.

Tremendous band,
just a shame that 'Beyond' is such a tremendous dirge. Its ok - almost decent - at best, but in their pomp, Dino were always way better than this.
*Listens to YLAOM and weeps*
I thought Beyond was great.
It's one of the weaker Dino albums, but, still way way waaaaaaay stronger than most bands best efforts.
Also, 'Without a Sound' has been cruelly neglected by the denizens of DiS which is a shame because it too is great.
i have Without A Sound
Feel The Pain = <3
the rest = uhm. not sure. i MIGHT listen to it next...
Show it some love!
it was the first Dino album I bought and I love it to this day.
yeah
it was the first one i got, in the oxfam shop in islington. it cost 99p. probably because it's scratched to fuck.
I've got the t-shirt!
The album isn't great though, Feel the Pain aside. Sorry!
Ha!
Well, it has sentimental appeal in as much as it was the first Dino album I bought when I was 14 and first getting into music that wasn't metal!
I understand this totally.
It's the same reason Dirty is always going to be my favourite Sonic Youth album.
Grab It = best thing on With A Sound
yeah i like beyond

You're so wrong.
Where you been has some of my favourite songs by any band ever.
Start Choppin, Goin Home, So What Else is New, Drawerings, Not the same...

hmm

It's the dense, layered instrumentation
of Where You been that raises it above for me. The strings! Oh lord, the strings.
Green Mind is quite good
i've never heard any of the other albums mind
ylaom
is obviously the best but green mind and where you been have their place and I can understand how some people can prefer them because they are more songy
you can say it is all down to taste
but to me, it's like comparing the 1970 Brazil world cup squad with the 2007 Spurs squad.

Surely the whole point of J Mascis is triumphantly failing
to fill your potential? Or did I miss the entire point of 1993?
*fulfill
duh
*fullfill?
huh?
hmm
I dont care some of my favourite dinosaur jr songs are on green mind and where you been. I actually really like green minds slick production and lack of murk it is a perfect summer album.

Green Mind
Bug
Fossils
You're Living All Over Me
Where You Been

Nah
Where You Been
YLAOM
Fossils
Bug
Green Mind
Hand it over
Without a Sound
I love all of them up to and including Green Mind, and Hand it Over and Without a Sound have their moments/moment.
Oh yeah,
not heard Dinosaur or Beyond. SOZ
And
'Take a run at the sun' is almost better than all of them.
Nah
Green Mind - How'd You Pin That One On Me, Live For That Look, The Wagon...
Bug - Budge, The Post, They Always Come...
Fossils - Cos I gots it on red vinyl. And it is incredible
Then YLAOM and then WYB. Some of WYB is utterly incredible.
I gots an etched 12" of Just Like Heaven, too. Is it possible to have sex with vinyl?
I agree entirely about Fossils.
It's very underrated. I wish I had it on red vinyl.
You forgot 'water'. I love that song. Like I say, I really, really like Green Mind! In fact, if it wasn't for freak scene, it would claim third place from Bug, f'sure!
I
love Dino Jr arguments. If you can call them arguments. If Where You Been were the only album that I was ever allowed to listen to again, I wouldn't be unhappy
I've got that etched disc
I've also got the Start Choppin' picture disc, it's yummy!
For the record, Where You Been is my favourite, although (shamefully) I have yet to hear YLAOM or Bug!
YES!
Got the Start Choppin' 10" as well. I'm not going to have lunch today by way of punishing myself for forgetting that
ylaom
green mind - where you been
bug
hand it over
without a sound
It's...
...very accessible.
If you hadn't heard anything by them before hearing this it'd be a great introduction to the band. Full of pop hits.
