let's talk about Doom. I'm going to list some doom bands I like and then you can say yes I like that band or no they are rubbish and then list some others. Also recommended newer albums as I'm not really up on current bands.
So some bands I think are good (and don't start telling me it's drone-doom/sludge/or other such bollocks).
Khanate
Corrupted
Esoteric
Iron Monkey (maybe not proper Doom)
Grief
Khanate I like
Grief I like that band
Iron Monkey no they are rubbish(deat to fake doom)
Not heard Corrupted or Esoteric.
I like:
Saint Vitus
Crowbar
High on Fire
Electric Wizard
But you probably know of that lot already. I don't know nothing about any modern music.
I like all them too yes
Corrupted and Esoteric are definitely my favourites though.
You should especially check out Corrupted who are Japanese but do everything in Spanish and are extremely pretentious and long-winded.
Skepticism are another good old band.
Iron Monkey are so not rubbish. Though I havent listened to them in donkeys years.
No, I don't really think Iron Monkey are 'rubbish'
but I never properly got into them. I think it's because I associate them with 'Earplugged 3', which marked a dip in quality in both Earaches sensibly priced label samplers and indeed the quality of acts on said label.
I think I will check out Corrupted.
Id recommend
Llenandose de Gusanos
Iron Monkey were indeed one of the only good bands on Earache in latter days
Then I might well have turned against them unfairly.
I'll give 'em another chance.
electric wizard
are pretty lush. does that help?
earth
and sunno))) maybe? Boris. that kinda thing too.
More sludge rather than doom but,
Crowbar
Fudge Tunnel
.
Sleep? I like them.
The definitions of what is doom and what is not doom have always seemed a bit hazy to me.
How could I forget Sleep
great band
Indeed,
but I always think of them as stoner rock?
Genre/schmenre though. Yes, Sleep are fantastic.
In which case:
Monster Magnet!
I think stoner rock
is just more upbeat and riffy rather than dirgey but yes I don't know and I don't really care
Doom/sludge is pretty blurry.
And most bands sounding doomy these days will usually just be called 'post metal' by lazy journos anyway.
.
Totally. Any band with detuned guitars/kinda Sabbath-esque riffs/plays a bit slow = Doom, apparently.
I thought this would be about the game. :(
I prefer the film
that FPS bit is great!!
YES!
I love that bit! :D
Harvey Milk!
God what a band. Not sure it is true doom either though.
.
so, do Swans count as doom?
dunno
probably not as they were never really a metal band. Probably should be though as it doesn't get much more dirgey.
Nadja
Grave Temple
KTL
Aethenor
Guapo
Earth
Earth! Yes to Earth
Earth certainly
Guapo = definitenly not doom but an ace band. Aethenor are good.
how are Aethenor doom?!
they are definitely more doom
than Guapo are
in spirit at least
I file them under my
Doom/drone section on my external hard drive.
SORRY!
maybe listen to them instead of just collecting/listing them?
But I do listen to them.
That's the reason they're in that folder.
Move along.
YEESSSSS
I believe you
Youre external hard drive has been
rendered useless by this admission*
*this is my new catchphrase
it's no "Nice to See you..."
I'm music-hall for the 21st century
Light entertainment 2.0
I don't think you do
Your external hard drive has been
rendered useless by this admission.
It's gonna be all sad now :'[
damn!
nadja are fucking amazing!
aidan baker is a genius...definatly the most innovative in the doom/sludge/ambient/drone field right now.
I'm listening to Khanate RIGHT NOW
It's inappropriate on a sunny afternoon, I've realised.
I've never been that into doom in the past - not classic or older stuff.
Newer things:
Asunder
Rwake
Orthodox
Lazarus Blackstar
Do Baroness count?
Other things that veer more into 'post metal':
Year of No Light
Minsk
I quite like doom/stoner influenced hardcore too, especially Cursed. Also Kylesa, less so
I have only heard of two of those bands
I'm so hopelessly out of touch :(
I need to copy some music
Same, same,
very much the same.
We should do a music swap
sesh. Like proper IRL people do.
definitely
once I get my CD's out of cardboard boxes.
Asunder are amazing
I'd forgotten. Stringstastic. They can play at my funeral.
I'm doing that tonight
I'm also going to make chilli - with Buffalo mince.
I am cool.
The last Orthodox album
wasn't very good, but the new one is supposed to be excellent. I want to hear it.
I liked it
So would you count the KTL stuff as doom?
Theme is pretty much the scariest thing i've heard.
I wouldn't even call it metal
personally
...What?!
I'm not calling it metal either!
WHATS GOING ON?
doom is a kind of metal, yes?
I'm confused
Hmm, i dunno.
I always put doom and drone together.
Like, doom is heavy ass evil drone, playing with guitars...
*played with
Maybe that's just me.
Doom came from early metal
i.e. Sabbath ultimately. Drone came out of ambient/krautrock/psych type stuff.
It's only relatively recently that the two were combined. I guess Earth might have started it, although don't quote me on that.
How annoying
I thought "Finally, a MF Doom thread!!!".
Alas...
Finally
there have been hundreds! He's like Coldplay round hyar.
yeah
I was just being in a silly Friday mood. Soon I will open a cider. Gaymers? Silly Friday mood. Told you.
Advanced warning for Monday
Look out for The BLACK METAL thread
The new Murcof
is surprisingly similar in atmosphere to a lot of the Doom bands
I like Khanate
I also love sleep, earth and sunno))).
I can't stop listening to sleep.
Help?
Turn the stereo off!
then when you've finished sleeping turn Sleep back on again.
Everyone should listen to "All The Live Long Day" by Harvey Milk.
everyone should listen to Harvey Milk full stop
Although I'm sure all you DOOM
purists (and I know there's a lot of you?!) will scoff, I urge you to check out Witch's debut from last year. Brilliant album. J Mascis on drums.
I have it.
It is good.
^^True
that album is apparently closer to stuff like St Vitus, who I still haven't listened to enough to form a proper opinion. If anyone knows a good place to start with them i'd like to hear about it!
I bought a Spirit Caravan album which features the St Vitus guitarist and it is pretty crap. Hth.
Born too late is the only one I know really.
It's good.
So that one then!
AAAAA!
Nobody mentions ASVA yet?! For Shaaaaaaaaame!
I second whoever claims Harvey Milk.
Wom wom wommmmmmmmmm DRAAAAANANANANANANANANNANANAUUUU U U U U Uuuuu.....
Earth
Sunn0)))
KTL
Om (Doom in places but not in others)
Boris
Pretty mainstream doom, granted, but good nonetheless.
The newest Orthodox album
is really quite excellent. Some of it is a bit jazzy (there is even a clarinet and a trombone sometimes!) but it's all good. They actually seem to have a bit of spanish guitar influence too now which is cool. The guy's voice sounds like a robot/organ but you get used to it!
I thought the last album was pretty much a Melvins rip-off but that's probably another one I was wrong about.
Anyway 'Amanacer en Puerta Oscura', you are a goodun.
Good bump,
I can recommend this Dirge album. I picked it up from Emusic the other day and it's fantastic - http://tinyurl.com/2reowc
More post-metal influenced than Burning Witch style straight evilness but very good nonetheless if you give it time.
How good
does the Burning Witch reissue sound... it's pretty immense.
And I don't think anyone mentioned this anywhere above, but 'Here Where Nothing Grows' by Ocean is some of the best doom I've ever heard and I'd definitely recommend.
Finally got around to
buying "El Mundo Frio" by Corrupted and it sounds absolutely massive. The soundtrack to the world slowly being ruined!
I got another Corrupted album
"Se Hace Por Los Suenos Asesinos"
Another good one! Starts with a long bleak acoustic song then gives way to sludge! And the last song is fast. I like.
Corrupted are highly recommended by me As long as you like singers who sound like they are gargling gravel. And to be fair he doesn't sing all the time.
Charger-
'Confessions of A Man...'
Sleep
Dopesmoker / Jerusalem
I recommend
the Gravetemple (Stephen O'Malley et al) album...1, 1 hour track. quite experimental and it takes a while to get going...probably not strictly doom either...but very much worth a listen!
If you like Khante
check out Khlyst - Jame Plotkin with a female ahem 'vocalist' - very hard-edged doom with a few ambient sections thrown in for good measure.
Any colour you like, as long as it's black...
I'd also add Moss
Their album "Cthonic Rites" sounds as if their performing some for of dark ritual...which I suppose is rather apt.
I'd also suggest Cthonic Rites
by Moss which manages to sound brilliant and terrifying at the same time.
please
lets have more posts starting with 'Lets talk about DOOM!' nice one!
electric wizard! burning star core!
I agree, DiS needs more DOOM-action
Lately I've been jamming obscene amounts of Electric Wizard, Acid King, Reverend Bizarre and Burning Witch.
..
Finally, the ball is in my court!
Moho - Spanish, similar sound to Orthodox with extra sludge. One of my favorites this (or was it last?) year
Monarch - I'm guessing everybody knows about them
The Devil and the Sea - Heart vs Spine sounds like it was recorded during the apocalypse. I'm not a fan of compression, but it sounds so right here.
Grivf - listen to Yggdrasil. Doom? Black metal? Folk? All I know is this is the creepiest thing I've ever heard.
Black Shape of Nexus - German Heaviousity
Everything Chiaroscuro mentioned is gold. Plus Burning Witch.
I'm disappointed.
I thought this was going to be a thread about me.
Asva
Burning Witch
Khanate
I love MF Doom
^ I was ready
to write another post about how good Operation Doomsday is.
khylst
are pretty ace
How about we all act like big boys and girls
and stop listening to a genre of music called 'doom'?
I feel I need aan introduction to DOOM.
It could potentially appeal to me and this thread is useful.
still no Nortt love?
although not 100% doomalicious his music is very bleak and dirgey.
