I'm going on holiday next week, and not only does my current mp3 player only hold 5gb, i have listened to whats on it A LOT recently, and it is a chore to replace things on it, but the battery life has dropped to about 5 hours (tops), which won't be much use if i'm travelling for 9 hours (each way)
You'd probably get a European Creative Zen because you're in Europe... And Europe has silly laws restricting the maximum volume of MP3 players - but America doesn't.
The firmware is, like, the inbuilt computer program wot runs your player*, and you can download the most up-to-date from the Creative website.
But if you update from creative.com rather than creative.co.uk it'll make the overall volume of the player LOUDER.
Look - here it is: http://tinyurl.com/2lldbz Over and out.
But y'know, I'm still scraping my jaw off the floor from your assumption that WMP is better than WinAmp...in fact the mere suggestion that WinAmp isn't the best software MP3 player available or only second to iTunes (depending on your preferences).
it comes with some software to port stuff over that i use, but it also works on a file heirachy system with drag and drop. it also keeps asking if i want to 'synchronise' it but i don't understand what that means and always click 'no'.
which suggests that i'm turning into my mother.
oh well.
My main gripe with the iRiver is it is a bit of a hassle, as to take stuff off (as far as i can tell) you have to go in through explorer and delete the files, but to put stuff on you synch it with WMP. confusing.
if you buy songs on itunes, can you put them on a zen, iriver, non-ipod, etc. straight away?
do they all support whatever format itunes songs are downloaded in?
my big old ugly creative zen 20gb is a real workhorse, it has never had any problems, I've thrown it down the side of snowdon, it was fine. I've dropped it in a water trough, it was fine. i've dropped it whilst cycling at 30mph, fine. It's very very scratched as you can imagine, but just keeps chugging on.
you can kill people with it, it reminds me of old episodes of Doctor Who. It's got this massive dent in it from when I dropped it on a bollard. Fantastic thing.
nice and solid and heavy. all heavy items last well. things that seem to light usually break. this is a proven electronic equipment fact.
the creative zen is a brick, something with a solidity resembling that of a shotputt.
and ALSO i know the user interface is shit, but since I am using an apple macbook, i have a special bit of user-created software i downloaded which actually has a far better user interface than either iTunes or the creative jukebox stuff...
CREATIVE
Cos they're better.
Cheers.
...
are they like a harddrive, so you can just drag and drop files, rather than have to go through itunes, etc?
yep!
ooooh
thats good. my iRiver is dying a slow death, and i was looking to replace it, but everything seems to be either
a) shit
b) not big enough
or
c) an iPod, so i would have to use fucking iTunes
how big do these Creatives get?
60GB
:O
is that mega-expensive though?
i was thinking more like 20 would be good...
mine cost me just over £200
i think.
Mine too.
But check this out...
http://tinyurl.com/2zzk6m
Benners: problem solved.
that's what i have
:)
£160?!
Waow. I paid £10 less then that for my 20GB model.
why is the 30gb version
120 quid more???
madness i tell you!
that 60gb one looks pretty sweet though...
I am seriously tempted to buy one NOW.
I'm going on holiday next week, and not only does my current mp3 player only hold 5gb, i have listened to whats on it A LOT recently, and it is a chore to replace things on it, but the battery life has dropped to about 5 hours (tops), which won't be much use if i'm travelling for 9 hours (each way)
seriously tempted...
Do it.
I wish I had £160.
Go for it, it's really good.
Plus you can watch films and stuff on it, though I've never bothered.
Battery life is good, too.
Also:
If you get a European one, it'll be a bit quiet cos of some silly law...
But you can download the firmware from the American site and it's LOUD.
i don't understand this ^
get a european what?
battery?
Creative Zen?
what?
and how would i get a european one? what is firmware? who am i?

Over and out.
*doesn't really know
i have the 60gb model
it's sexy.
I've had the black 20GB
one, for about 20 months now, and it's still amazing. Battery life still ain't bad either!
It's almost full though, so I'm gonna get the 60GB video one, fairly soon.
<3
what are iRivers like nowadays?
they were supposed to be by far the best back in the day (with a price to match) but maybe other things have caught up now
as far as i can tell
they haven't brought any new hard-drive ones out since i got my 6gb one about 18 months ago.
but it has been pretty good generally. although i don't have anything to compare it with...
ive had my iriver h340
for a few years now and love it.
it's probably a little behind the times now, but is great. a little bulkier than most things these days, but i don't really mind.
The h140 / h340 represent the pinnacle of portable MP3 players
I have no idea why no one makes anything like it any more.
YOU DON'T NEED iTUNES FOR AN iPOD
The ml_ipod plugin for WinAmp works fine and even allows you to take songs off if you want.
i did not know that
but WinAmp? really i haven't used that since i was about 12.
Are there similar plugins for WMP?
Err. I don't know.
But y'know, I'm still scraping my jaw off the floor from your assumption that WMP is better than WinAmp...in fact the mere suggestion that WinAmp isn't the best software MP3 player available or only second to iTunes (depending on your preferences).
Jesus man. WMP?
well I Don't Know
I though WinAmp was all about getting skins and stuff. Maybe it has changed a lot since I last used it (about 8 years ago) but it was shit then.
Anyway WMP is what I am used to using, and I like it just fine thankyouverymuch
no
winamp is about having a nice, tiny little player without loads of pointless add ons. i use it and i love it.
i shall investigate further then
but for now i'm using WMP, and I Like It. OK? Good.
Do you think the Creative works with WMP? That might be the clincher...
i don't know
it comes with some software to port stuff over that i use, but it also works on a file heirachy system with drag and drop. it also keeps asking if i want to 'synchronise' it but i don't understand what that means and always click 'no'.
which suggests that i'm turning into my mother.
oh well.
Do You Want To Synchronise Me?
Y/N?

Is It Coz I Is Black?
how easy is it to take stuff off
and put stuff on?
My main gripe with the iRiver is it is a bit of a hassle, as to take stuff off (as far as i can tell) you have to go in through explorer and delete the files, but to put stuff on you synch it with WMP. confusing.
i just go through explorer
and delete stuff. but then i don't find it difficult as i put each album in it's own folder..
you can delete
the file using the zen menu so it doesnt need to be connected to the pc
(does that make sense?)
yeah i think so
you mean i could be walking along the street, decide 'i don't like this song' and then just delete it so my ears never have to endure it again?
exactly
:)
basically yeh
and the sound is better,
how about
watching/downloading videos on either?
i dont know about videos on ipod
but zen is pretty easy,
creative
zen
cos i've got one
ipod
better than everything else.
ipod
my zen I've had for only a few months is fucked. :(
that's your fault
mine is fine
CREATIVE!
iPod
Purley for the ease of browsing for music
creative
better value
ipod
the menu navigation is better
zen.
iPod
ipod
they're better.
iPod
I just did eeny-meeny miney moe.
Zen
Zen
Coz It's cheaper...
Creative Zen.
End of thread.
ipod
Zen
I love mine.
zen
because i use WMP and it syncs with the library automatically
Creative
better value
certainly used to have more file formats
slightly better sound
I have had three Creatives
One went under a tube train
One I smashed the screen
One just broke
I HATE THEM
You hate them
Because you break them?
They're easily broken
(apart from the first one which was a tragedy)
I've dropped my zen
about ten times and it's still fine.
under a tube train?
oh and to be fair the second one was my fault. I kept hitting it because it wouldn't work.
The third one just had a hard disk error and was irrepairable
^
Every time mine has supposedly broken, I just hit the reset button, and it's fine. They're clearly less breakable then iPods.
or does he break them becase he hates them?
shut it fat-bum
you look like a post-coital Anneka Rice
stupid q?
if you buy songs on itunes, can you put them on a zen, iriver, non-ipod, etc. straight away?
do they all support whatever format itunes songs are downloaded in?
i never have downloaded from itunes
but i assume you are downloading mp3s, in which case, Yes. mp3 is supported by all mp3 players :D
what are
.m4a files?
The spawn of satan.
How do you convert them without using iTunes?
are m4a files
the iTunes format when you buy/download from the Store?
i think iTunes itself can do them
but the end results will sound shitter than what you start with because they've been recompressed.
No
They are DRM protected, which means you have to use a special ripper to play them on other devices.
Oh, but they have started selling unprotected music too, for some artists.
ipod
much more user-friendly and intuitive. and the headphone socket doesn't fuck up after 3 months, as happened with all 3 zens i had.
^ this is true
i've had my zen for six months
and have had no problems with that.
Only if you get
a really old one, before they fixed the fault.
^
if you get the zen, don't use the earphones that come with them, they're not very good
i've been using them for a while
they're ok.
i only ever buy cheap earphones anyway though.
My headphone socket of my zen just screwed up
I've had it 2 and a bit years - that's probably the usual life for consumer electronics these days though
Have you still got it?
You can probably contact Creative and get them to replace it, cos they've admitted there was a problem with early Zens...
Ooo, I have
I'll look into that, thanks
Oops, damn shared computers
that was me
Yawn
Hi!
Creative Zen
Has radio, more compatable etc.
BUT you don't get the wicked little dial...
iPod
With insurance.
ipod.
they're smaller and dont have pointless features.
also, my creative broke.
Creative.
I've had mine for years now, it's become one of my most treasured posessions, and it's not even half full yet.
Creative
my big old ugly creative zen 20gb is a real workhorse, it has never had any problems, I've thrown it down the side of snowdon, it was fine. Cheaper than an ipod.
^ I've got this
you can kill people with it, it reminds me of old episodes of Doctor Who. It's got this massive dent in it from when I dropped it on a bollard. Fantastic thing.
it's a satisfactory weight
nice and solid and heavy. all heavy items last well. things that seem to light usually break. this is a proven electronic equipment fact.
the creative zen is a brick, something with a solidity resembling that of a shotputt.
and ALSO i know the user interface is shit, but since I am using an apple macbook, i have a special bit of user-created software i downloaded which actually has a far better user interface than either iTunes or the creative jukebox stuff...
Zune!
Go to the states and get one. They're brilliant.
