so, we're thinking of doing something about the best nights around the UK, we know of an obvious few which've gained a bit of praise in the national press, stuff in Southend and London, obviously but where's really reliably good and mixes live bands with good djs or just reliably has good bands...?
Liars Club
in Nottingham.
^ this
I wish they would move back to the social though...
They..
have moved from the social...why where to? i miss nottingham
They've moved to
Stealth, and it's on saturday nights now. It's still fun, but because so many people tend to drift in and out of the room, it lacks the amazing atmosphere of the social. I wish they would move back, some of the best nights i've had were there.
retro
in manchester
Goonite
at the Buffalo Bar in Highbury & Islington
.
There is no nights worth mentioning in Southend any longer. Junk and Dirty Hearts were it and both upped sticks, moved away and are now doing other stuff.
R.I.O.T at the Jailhouse in hereford.
So so good. They mix stuff like rolo tomassi in with timbaland, meet me in st louis, blood brothers, of montreal, aih, neutral milk hotel. They make me cream.
The Do Club
in Brighton.
It's the only clubnight in Brighton worth going to.
Had some pretty amazing bands play down there in the dark dingy cave that is the core club.
F*ck Art, Let's Dance, Coventry
Runs every Friday and isn't afraid to experiment with the bands it puts on. Past few months have seen P.G. Six (of Tower Recordings), Strange Death, Trash Fashion, Twilight Sad, Tired Irie...Basically, it tends not to pander to what's being hyped in the NME and focuses on keeping the night interesting. DJs are always good too.
Well
It's the most pretentious club in Brighton, actually. And makes an effort to out obscure itself. I'm not sure if that makes it 'worth going to'
I don't see what makes it pretentious?
it's just a group of friends who dress the same, who listen to the same music, watching bands, dancing and having a good time.
At least that's what my friends do there.
There are few other nights in brighton who are set on doing something other than simply putting on sub-standard indie nights with cheap drinks aimed at 17 yr olds who just want to get pissed.
I totally appreciate that the do is very obscure and do indeed try to keep it that way. There aren't many places in the uk where you can see Marnie Stern, Kania Tieffer, Indian Jewelry etc in a club the size of a front room.
It may not be for all but i like it =)
I love Kania Tieffer (L)
It Came From The Sea in Brighton is also awesome.
Is That The One
At The Sussex Arts Club?
It Came From The Sea...
...used to be at the Sussex Arts Club, but now Komedia (bigger, darker, louder).
august sets online here...
http://www.voodoolily.co.uk/seamusic.htm
...if you haven't been for a while.
also, shd say that i count a bunch of the Do folk amongst my closest friends - and although i can see how the atmosphere may sometimes seem a little strained, they themselves are both adorable and *real*.
But that is what makes The Do rubbish
it is full of people who all know each other. You just feel like you are not wanted if you are not part of the 'inner circle'
Do Club online, incidentally is here...
http://www.the-do.co.uk
not wanted?
Sad to hear that. We make an extra special effort to be nice to everyone from the moment they enter the door. It may seem like everyone knows everyone but that's only 'cause we make a big effort to socialise with our valued punters.
We seem to have a vocal few people claiming pretentiousness for us. I'm really keen to know why that it but I guess that's what the 'Send note' link is for.
Okay I didn't make a great point there
I just find that if I do go it is to see the band and then I don't feel too comfortable after they have played and tend to leave early

I second
Bad Sneakers and add Evol in Liverpool, Ladytrons club night.
Spiders in Hull.
Cheap as hell cocktails, no live bands but great atmosphere.
it's gone downhill since unfortunately
either that or i just don't like this emo business.. probably the latter..
idioteque at subculture in leeds is excellent.. and they've started to have bands playing recently..
..anither vote for the awesome Spiders
....that and The Adelphi are the two things I miss most about Hull.

there are no good club nights in Cornwall
Fact. They are all dreadful, even when you're totally wasted.
Sheffield-wise
Fuzz Club @ the University
The best night in cardiff

It Came From The Sea @ Komedia in Brighton
and for sheer novelty value
Playroom @ The Zap in Brighton
-Giant bouncey castles, oversized games, ball pits, face painter & other madness with dirty music
There's a place called The Zap?!
Bye!
Is Playroom on every Saturday?
I need to go to way more club nights this year rather than the same old big-name Brighton stuff.
I think its either bi-weekly or once a month
might be wrong though!
me too
i didn't even get to "it came from the sea" last year :/
the core club thingy always looked interesting, esp the these new puritans date, i couldn't find anyone else interested enough to go though...
It came from the sea is once a month!
I should check this core club out!
I dont know if there are any really good indie clubs in glasgow
though i have next to no knowledge so there probably is.
Theres the "famous" national pop league that happens the last friday of every month at the woodside social. Maybe the art school has some good nights or something.
'Indie Clubs'
Generally tend to be filled with scarf wearing bellends.
Optimo!!!
^^^^^
I haven't went to the night, but the optimo DJs were at Indian Summer last year and they were fantastic.
i just booked george to play
Nice N Sleazy's? Will that be ok? I think Jenny from Eva and Malcolm Middleton's band is support?

Good lads, Good night.
Revolver @ Manchester Roadhouse
Went on Monday. THE only club I've been to in which every song is fucking fantastic.
the do
its hardly the Do's fault if a lot of people who go there know eachother, isnt that just the essence of brighton?
make some friends, problem solved

Razor Stiletto
In Sheffield is very interesting and different, and has been doggedly doing it's thing for years.
http://www.myspace.com/razorstiletto
i've been told this is one of the better nights to play in sheff?
http://www.myspace.com/wearecoolasfolk
seems to be a lot of nights, which is a great sign for the city.
in liverpool
you had valhalla at the zanzibar (which has now finished). now there is meshuggy and buzz buzz? bang! bringing the weirding & wonder
does liverpool have the oddest named clubs
or is it just me?
there has been some brighton shout outs
in this thread, but in all honesty, if we are talking about a straight down the line indie clubnights there aren't any that are any good whatseover. They are all rubbish.
The Do is good fun, but only because when I've been I've known a lot of the people who have been there. If I went with people who weren't part of the Brighton "scene" I'd probably find it absolutely horrific. The bar is a complete joke and the venue layout is far from perfect. Plus it is overly oblique in its music choice at times, basically like the Penthouse, but £5 entry, with a bar that is at least twice as expensive. Still, run by passionate people, and the bands never fail to be entertaining.
