And where were Blonde on Blonde, The Freewheelin' and Highway 61 Revisited?
Blood on the Tracks was ridiculously low. AND they put a picture of the Blonde on Blonde album cover the wrong way round on screen when they were talking about it. AND they only gave it about 30 seconds of discussion.
A bit unfair to dismiss Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen like that. Born to Run is an OK album, but it's Nebraska that should have been in the top 10. That album is focking* ace. Heres hoping the new album is more like Nebraska and less like Born to Run.
*Note: Thats "fOcking" and not "fUcking", which means its twice as good.
DSTOM takes major, important themes in today's horrible world (materialism, war, depression) and makes them sound DULL AND BORING. It takes issues I care deeply about and turns them into overly produced neo-prog tripe for balding CAMRA members.
Listening to that album makes me want to write 2 minute pop-punk tunes about how great neoliberalism is, how there's nothing really wrong with war and how all depressed people should get off their arse and get on with life.
I'm listening to Pink Floyd right now and it's not that marginal psychedellic fluff from the 70s. It's great and it's called Attack of the Grey Lantern.
I'm kinda disappointed none of ya's have called me out here with "Mansun's sound is Britpop!" Oh well. I wouldn't have even argued the point, but they do sound Pink Floydish too, 'cept better.
See Emily Play and that other one (A minor with the cool lead, Where something) are about the only worthwhile tunes from PF that I can see.
Go back, read my post again and write out 2 sides of A4 paper with the following:
'Dave Rio does not really hate war and was merely trying to point out how much he hates Dark Side Of The Moon. If I had read his post properly, I would have realised this.'
No. I Think DSOTM is deeply affecting. I notice from a quick glance at your rated bands that not everything you like is quick and exciting, and i really don't think your reason valid for disliking DSOTM. Perhaps you dislike it because it is too popular? Do not immediately disregard this option, although im sure you already have. It appears to have been on the receiving end of the backlash effect often placed on albums that do ridiculously well. It is most certainly not dull and boring. The lyrics aren't exclusive ( it is probably another reason that JohnD doesn't like it) and for the most part are timeless. If, as you stated in your earlier post, you hold the themes in DSOTM close to you then you have absolutely no reason not to like it. Or perhaps you know several more obscure bands that utilise these themes using dense and unappraochable metaphors on a backdrop of dissonant, angular guitars. I didn't read your post properly - little need for the condescensing tone in your reply.
I've been depressed and I've known people who've been even more depressed than I have. I know how horrible it feels. I know that it's like nothing else on earth, that you can't escape it and that it consumes everything you do....
....and DSOTM just makes it sound bloody boring. Like a wet Monday in October, or something. It's hideous!
I really don't hate it cos it's successful at all. I think Ok Computer (which undoubtedly was influenced by DSOTM) tackles similar themes and tackles them far, far, far better.
sorry if my earlier post offended you though, I don't mean to be as arsey as I undoubtedly am.
Can't agree with you there. I don't believe DSOTM is a soundtrack for depression, but an uplifting and life-affirming album, unlike Ok computer, which personally i find a whole load more depressing (i am sure we'll have to agree to disagree!) Oh, and no worries!
And as for you laika, i happen to know for a fact that you've never heard DSOTM, and even if you were to you stick to your views now. Stubborn bastard.
I think the most uplifting and life affirming albums often deal with dark issues, though. You can empathise with them, get involved in them and find them intense to the point of catharsis. It's the best kind of music, I think.
Perhaps I was wrong to say that DSOTM's about depression. It's more about insanity, really. Which is what I'll be if I ever hear that wailing woman on Great Gig In The Sky again.
Caught the top 20. Good show though. They did the same thing about 4/5 years ago with a panel of experts etc. I think John Peel actually was the host of the show and Geldof was definitely one of the guests. I think Radiohead Ok computer was no. 5 that time but they certainly had 2 in the top ten.
Re: Dank Side Of The Moon
but i do think pink floyd were much better before it.
besides look at radiohead, which band do you think they learnt half of their tricks from ;)

OK Computer at No.1 has restored my faith in the public. It's not trendy or fashionable or anything, just a fucking awesome album.
That winning has put me in a really good mood :)

Re: Dank Side Of The Moon
A shortage of Bowie albums, no 'Velvet Underground' (3rd album), no 'Disraeli Gears', no 'Germ-Free Adolescents'.

Pink Floyd are a band I've never seen the attraction of.
