It’s a debut EP, make or break time in a band’s life. Granted it’s not like this EP and the following album have spurred the band onto the big time, but that’s not to say they’re bad by any means but instead just a band that has been overlooked for whatever reason.
I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness start off with two songs that can be defined as build-up songs, starting off slowly before reaching choruses that are easily capable of getting you tapping with the beat. Admittedly The Less You See, the latter of the two, is more of a mostly instrumental, mellower song than its predecessor but you could easily combine the two on a 7” with the chirpier We’re Still the Weaker Sex as the clear candidate as the A-Side.
So we’ve kicked off with something to get your attention and then slowed it down leading into I Want to Die in the Hot Summer and When You Go Out, which are the stand out tracks of the EP for me. Don’t be fooled by the title into thinking you’re getting a dark ballad song by the first, as really it seems to concentrate more on the summer mentioned into the title rather than the deathly aspects. The instrumental parts in it blend well with the appearance chorus and give us a more rounded view of the band, as they mix the different styles with ease. When You Go Out is the song which you’d most likely hear in an Indie club and not feel it was out of place, not that it’s full of synths, but rather that it’s driven along at a higher tempo than the other songs with a bass line bordering on funk style, which is given its chance to shine during the times post-chorus when the singing removes itself from centre stage.
Your Worst is the Best finishes the EP off with 2 minutes of slow, mellow instrumental before some lyrics kick in over militaristic drums, before heading back to how it began before dying down and giving the EP a mellow ending after two vibrant tracks.
