I love news 24. Save for a vague hostility I am completely indifferent to Catholicism (or religion in general for that matter), yet I have still been watching the election of the new pope with a bit of facination...

Anyway a new ones been elected... I love the way they get to choose their name... I would be Pope Steve.

Lets hope its not the right wing nutter

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Who is the right wing nutter?

Re: The Pope has Landed!

I think its the German one, I'm not sure.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Ah, Cardinal Ratzinger.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

German? Right wing? Nutter?

History? Repeating? Sort of?

Seriously tho, how dissapointing is The Chimney? I was expecting some industrial sized beast of a chimney!

Re: The Pope has Landed!

I was kinda hoping it would be Cardinal Sicola and that he'd choose to keep his own name, making him Pope Sicola... heh heh!

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Ratzinger used to be in the Hitler Yoof - FACT.

Its a shame that Cardinals Sickle, A. Scooper and Will Eatitself couldnt make it to the conclave this year...

:)

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Today i was told:

Whats brown and half-eaten?

The Pope's easter egg.
If you want to tell this awful joke, then your time is limited, so i would spread the word asap.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

fucking hell, the hitler youth, really?

Yeah its him, hes pope...

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Yeah but only because it was compulsory under Hitler's orders to be in the Hitler youth so I don't think he's a proper fascist.
Not that I give too much of a shit about the pope but it's a shame they didn't appoint an African or South American pope as that's where most of the world's catholics are. If an African pope had been appointed, they might have had the nerve to drag the catholic churches arse into the 21st Century regarding some of their less tolerable views regarding conrteception etc.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

He's the right wing one. However he's 78 so should snuff it in a reasonable short time.
If the popes chose by God but it took 3 goes at voting does that mean that over 50% of the cardinals aren't in tune with him? Or does he just have a lisp or something so its hard to understand him?

Re: The Pope has Landed!

I’ve also heard that although he's very conservative, he only joined the Hitler Youth when it became compulsory.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

looks like they're staying in the dark ages for the next few years. at least he won't last very long!

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Did anyone really expect anything different? Whenever an organisation or group is under act, they retreat to what they know, they return to the foundation. Electing Ratzinger is not that much different from the US government going more conservative after the 9/11 attack. Catholicism has been battered over the last few years primarily through the child abuse scandals and I'm sure there is a certain amount of worry over the effect homosexuality might have on Catholicism, as it has had an effect on other religions. Electing a white guy who is almost certainly not going to be preaching contraceptive use and more rights for women is no surprise whatsoever given the circumstances.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

He can't really be blamed for the Hitler Youth thing, but that doesn't change the fact that he's a very right wing and conservative Pope at a time when the Catholic Church has just been crippled by a similarly right wing and conservative Pope. At least JP2 looked like a giant baby so people felt sorry for him.

Still, being old he's going to die soon anyway.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Actually I think he was jewish then convereted to the catholic faith.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Apparently the new pope is supposed to choose a name that a previous pope has used. John Paul 1st bucked that trend a while ago but he only lasted a month or so. Pope Steve has a certain ring to it, though.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

You know the Catholic Church is truly modern and with it when we end up with Pope Lemar I.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

The new popes 'proper' title is Benedict XVl

Re: The Pope has Landed!

How can anyone expect liberal ground breaking ideas to come from the Catholic church when the new Pope has to resurrect a bloody name from a dead Pope?!? Recycling is all well and good but c'mon...

Re: The Pope has Landed!

good to see the old Rc's have brought in some young blood as the new pope! Im sure he'll be around for AGES as the new pope! pope - what a great word. hey?!

Re: The Pope has Landed!

He was the 3 to 1 favourite as well, wasn't he.

I thought his name was 'Rap Singer'. Oh! How hilarious.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Yes! He's chosen MYname. Plus the XI. Benedicts of the world unite!

Re: The Pope has Landed!

so you're Benedict V? Goodness. me.

Save me! and so on

Re: The Pope has Landed!

If you were Benedict V, wouldn't that make you about 3,000 years old round about now? If so, good to see you keeping it real in the twilight years of your life.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Did you invent those mints as well?

Re: The Pope has Landed!

That's Bendicks. They make a mockery of the great name Benedict.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Bollocks to the lot of yer. I'm rubbish at Roman numerals.

My dad Benedict XVI - the enforcer!- is gonna kick yo ass!

Re: The Pope has Landed!

'The enforcer'?! Isn't that a Jean CLaude Van Damme film? So you're telling me you're 3000 years old and related to JCvD? That's the sort of family I'm after...

Re: The Pope has Landed!

The benedictine papal dynasty has been struggling with straplines for some time. Went downhill after X - 'The X man it's ok to like'

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Haha - you wanna have a look at some of the suggestions in the other thread.
'Benedict XVI - The best a man can get'
Benedict XIV - wut?

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Bennedict XV - Once I killer a man.... seriously.

It never gets old :-)

Re: The Pope has Landed!

As far as Benedicts go, I'm worried about this one. He's no Dirk Benedict, that's for sure.

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Haha, doubtful that there was a Pope 1000 years before Mr. Jesus was even born!
Possible... but unlikely

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Incidentally, why are you after 'a family'? To gain a sense of acceptance and belonging, or for more nefarious purposes...?

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Aaargh!

That was aimed at Bamos way up there ^

Re: The Pope has Landed!

I would give an emo reply about how I'm looking for the loving bosom of the family circle because I hate my mum, she won't let me go to the shops on my own, or something.

But basically I need it for scientific research on the family unit. I'm investigating inbreeding and it's effects. So pairing off Jean Claude, Dirk Benedict and the Pope should produce wonderful results...

Re: The Pope has Landed!

Good plan. Dirk would certainly be up for it. Check his quote here

Re: The Pope has Landed!

The Catholic church has joined the Dark Side, by the looks of it.

But we knew that already...

*end of blasphemy*

Scary though...

Re: The Pope has Landed!

oh great, another conservative as pope against women and condoms. You know, for a second there, i thought the church would turn liberal...just a little atleast.
