i need some for a sort of project (i cant say too much, but Liv Tyler will have nothing to do with it), can anyone recommend some REALLY bleak slowcore or general slow music that doesnt go into doom/drone metal categories?

think bands like Bedhead, Codeine or Low, but taken further, as far as possible.

em pleh

Starter for 10.

Jessica Bailiff
Rivulets

Mojave 3

Slowdive
Mazzy Star

That's probably no help at all.

Bohren

And Der Club of Gore... it's as slow as you're gonna get whilst not going drone.

HTRK

..

also a good call

is HTRK.

i can feel loads of answers for this coming, but none immediately. there are LOADS of bands that have taken it that step bleaker and slower than Codeine (rarely bettered, obvs).

blates

i prefer bedhead to codeine though.

der club of gore=pretty much atmos? bored me a bit supporting isis. i still want a...pop sensibility to the music (?), if that makes sense?

bedhead and the new year =

fookin amazing.

i have been racking my brains here - no names are coming to me at all. some bedhead is probably the slowest i can think of in this style...(clean guitar, distinct melody, etc)

some (more recent) bohren is less atmos and like really slow kadane-esque movement, albeit in a more Lynchie style of course. thats where the synths come in i suppose.

Rex? At their slowest it's no slower than prime Bedhead... I feel you may have to comission a piece here!! (I'll do it, sounds like a good challenge)

Seems like you may need to go Kranky - something like Labradford or the aforementioned Jessica Bailiff...

If only Khanate were less in the doom/drone metal category!

yes

im liking some of bohrens newer stuff. id pretty much marry jessica bailiff, labradford are more focused on the atmos like stars of the lid whereas im looking for more songdriven stuff. ^ is a big help though.

yep your idea sounds the best. me and my friend are going to record a 20bpm pop song. she can speak/sing in french, german and english. it will be good, but have a go too!

i may well try

will let yer know!

Jessica Bailiff

wrote me a message today, and it had a :-) face in it. I think that means we're officially in love. I'm going to see her in a couple of weeks so I will be able to confirm then.

Jessica Bailiff

I always though Jessica Bailiff, like the entire Kranky roster, were a bunch of gawky socially incompetent Canadians who doubled up as failed astronomers. Unless I'm missing the irony.

Not only that....

...she's American.

...

Valet
Seekonk

Kranky again:

Perhaps Charalambides? Its melancholy and slow in the most part, not sure about bleak though...

Red House Painters

is the slowest thing ever

wrong

but they are lovely

true

are you gonna take your new band (if you have one?) in this direction?

No.

It will be filthy and loud and obnoxious. Woo.

American Analog Set

a SUPERB band too.. they do a bit of pop too, but mostly drone stuff...

yes but

their pop stuff is much better

death cab for cutie's 'stability' ep...

..where they decided they wouldn't mind sounding more like low for three songs. they've never really done anything like it since.

although if gibbard's voice annoys you that's probably useless. you can't really get slower or better than codeine anyway.
