i don't get it. i really don't get why bands carry on with this sub mogwai boringness year after year. it's embarrassing how some bands don't realise that using the same guitar tones & techniqures and playing slowly doesn't put them in the same league as godspeed.
there is nothing new or even noteworthy on this album! WWWWWWWWWWWWWHY?
I don't like this band at all
As well as some other bands everyone here seems to adore, but I'm afraid people will throw stuff at me if I say owt...
iLiKETRAiNS are about thirteen thousand times more interesting than Mogwai
If you have to compare them to them, which frankly I don't understand at all. They are completely different.
They have songs that are actually about things, with lyrics that I find both interesting and at times just downright exciting. Their live show is great. I couldn't care about analysis of guitar tones.
The lyrics just make
me think of a boring Current 93. Mogwai are a bit repetitive now but at the start they were the shizzle.
the more i hear of them actually
the more i think they REALLY want to be current 93, but haven't got the songwriting skills or the evil voice down well enough.
Current 93?
The people we saw at ATP? The people we saw at ATP that were really boring?
iLiKETRAiNS keep me interested for an entire set. And as I have a really, really poor attention span, they must be doing a good j
they weren't really boring you fooool
i was gripped once i got into it. and then i heard their album All The Pretty Little Horses and thought it was one of the most beautiful things i've ever heard.
hmm maybe i need to see these trains people live or something, maybe it doesnt translate well to record.
They were utter garbage.
Oooh, look at me! I'm a quirky poet!!!
Sit down you fanny.
is it more or less quirky
than iLiKETRAiNS providing a book of essays with their album 'to introduce the listener to the characters that inhabit the world of the music of iLiKETRAiNS'
or indeed the use of capitals in their name? eh?
More.
The iLiKETRAiNS booklet sounds pretentious, but I love things that give a background to their songs like that. It's one of the reasons I adore the 'wamba.
Although you're right on the name. That's an error.
Jamie Summers
You're just a massive geek.
I love Current 93,
but that was well funny Mr Bamos. Made me do a snerk.
theyre poop
some people like them
some people don't.
End of thread?
END OF MESSAGEBOARD.
end of music magazine industry
full stop.
bf
I didn't like them when I saw them, but then I sold two copies of their first demo for forty quid each, so now I LOVE them
ooh i have some of those
good stuff
bf
yeah...I was pleased to have something that's not my thing, that's worth money. So many things I have that are worth money, I love ;)
I didn't like the slowness of all their material. I like fast songs and or variety
I've not really listened to them on record
but live, they're captivating for about 40 minutes. I like their sound and aesthetic.
Best gig of the year
was iLIKETRAiNS on the Camden Crawl before Winehouse.
Utterly moving - almost spiritual - massive guitars - a totally awesome experience.
I guess you'll have to stick to your Leatherface records Jamie (I have a few actually) but they are not in the same unviverse as the trains boys in my estimation.
um
are leatherface are at all relevant to this conversation?
i guess i'll go listen to my thicky music, me no like complicated trains men, they so clever and me is dumb!
much like Kellog's Frosties
they're great.
And despite their gloomy sound, they don't take themselves seriously at all. Their live performances are really fun and full of energy, which probably isn't something you'd expect from just hearing their records.
Oh, and Mogwai are bins.
wow
they must have changed
cos the couple of times i saw them (summer 2005) they were the most boring, motionless, gimmicky postrock band i'd ever seen.
I've seen em loads
bloody ace band.
They have also made beards cool again.
I think they're great live.
Not so good on record.
I don't like Mogwai at all.
Can we stop comparing them to Mogwai now?
It's like comparing Take That with Matthew Pinsent.
Yeah,
everyone knows that Pinsent is way better.
or shakin stevens
to elvis presley
which one did 'this old house'?
That was the best one.
That was The Searle Brothers.
Close though.
Ah, those searle brothers and their tiny, bald cox
iLiKEROWiNG
terrible, terrible band name
i like
their songs in isolation, but they all sound too similar and the new album ends up sounding really homogenous and sludgy and I just want to turn it off about halfway through. And there's nothing on it as great as Terra Nova. I definitely want to see them live though.
It's the kind of music
you're able to enter into or not.
I suppose the same can be said about other bands I love like Gregor Samsa, Hammock or Mahogany.
They're great live, and so far their records have been flawless.
But I can understand many people finding it boring.
Still nothing like Mogwai...
Mogwai are fantastic, always have been
godspeed are fucking boring, to be honest.
iLiKETRAiNS are ok, not amazing, but I do enjoy them
one of those
sentences was the worst thing you've ever said
it's mostly true
I really don't get the hype. Nothing happens in half their songs. It can be the musical equivalent of watching paint dry. Sure, I love it when they raise the tempo, but the build up is ridiculously long.
this thread's a bit retarded
i don't see why you've even used mogwai and godspeed as reference points when talking about iLiKETRAiNS. they don't really sound like EITHER of those bands and i don't think they're trying to either.
if you think they're boring, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but talking silly about them not being as good as godspeed (who IS as good as godspeed?) is a bit pointless innit?
they blatantly do
sound like mogwai. as do mono, and explosions in the sky, and a hundred other bands.
They really do sound bugger all like Mogwai though.
Really.
explosions in the sky sounding a bit like Mogwai ? Maybe.
But iLT ? No way.
Or are you trying to be the new wrightylew ?
i like them
very atmospheric. though repetitive in places
and jamie, current 93 were poo at atp
ITS ALL LIES
I LUV CURRENT 93
You're delusional...
My problem with ILT
(apart from that I can't be bothered to type their name out) is that they are so repetitive. There really is no difference between any of their songs, or old or new material. They're not awful, they're just too samey. This extends to their live performances too, which are equally rote.
Ok, I don't like their pretentiousness either - it's just music for fuck's sake, it's not the Ten Commandments, ya po-faced gits.
Brilliant band
I really didn't like them at first but their amazing live and the depth of their lyrics and just about everything else they do now makes them a class proposition in my eyes.
Their show at the Cockpit a couple of months ago really was breathtaking. Some people just don't get it I guess.
And they're nothing like Mogwai. Sigur Ros, Tindersticks, Nick Cave maybe. Mogwai no.
yep
those are better reference points. And early Pulp.
which early pulp?
Freaks-era?
yah
I think so.
I don't like them
but then i'm rarely a fan of most things that can be labelled 'post-rock' so it's no suprise.
...
they don't sound like Mogwai though.
:-D
More like Matthew Pinsent.
i loved their earlier stuff
but this album isnt grippin me at all
went to see them yesterday
at the Academy. Mesmeric, and obviously nice blokes too. I worry that their material is getting a bit samey, but a reckon a band can release an EP and a full album which sound essentially the same and get away with it. Their second will be the one which shows whether or not they're a one trick pony.
they don't sound like Mogwai
or Godspeed
or Current 93
I really love them, the stories are amazing, and the way they play is so delicate and measured and moving, it's wonderful. And I love all the uniforms and the projections, they're one of the best live bands I've ever seen.
ps J_So, can I have the album then please? x
yup
i'll bring it on saturday
plus the little book of essays
plus the single
plus 2 press releases
want a seth lekman ep?
really?
yes please!
okay
emi sent me two for some reason
They
aren't on EMI are they?
On record they lose some of their appeal
but live they are amazingly good. The lighting, the projections, the noise, it's awesome.
Their lyrics can be a bit clumsy sometimes, but they're a lot more interesting that 90% of the usual variations on 'I love you' nonsense you find in songs.
depends on.............
the individuals personal taste. I've always liked 'iLiKETRAiNS'
I'll continue to buy their material. :)

I'm going to see them
because Sennen are supporting.
Cheers
Oh
and they sound nothing like Mogwai you big fanny
next thing you'll all be
saying that Municipal Waste don't sound like Slayer
YOU TARDS
it's like saying
your bathwater looks like the sea
i put this band on about two years ago
and to be honest I didn't even know who they were, I booked Redjetson, and they came with them because it was a joint tour, but they really impressed me a lot.
I haven't seen them live since then, but I have been sent their album. I thought the booklet was an ace idea, and found it very interesting when I read it. That was until I listened to the album and realised what a huge mistake it was. The lyrics, after reading the stories, just seem totally rubbish. The music, while being quite epic at times, really isn't all that inspired either. I found it very difficult to listen all the way through. A big disappointment.
^
totally agree on how the lyrics seem rubbihs after reading the stories. The stories themselves are fantastic, but there's no imagination or creativity or insight in the way the lyrics tell them.
Have you heard
Progress reform?
I was really looking forward to this album
But when I played it for the first time I was completel bored. I was shocked in fact as to how rubbish it was. Sure, the booklet of essays were nice, but that was the most interesting part about it.
I've not seen them live so can't comment on that, but I hope to catch them soon, just to see...
i dont know what you're all whining about
this album is fantastic so far
(then again, i'm only on track two..)
Those po-faced teenage doom-laden lyrics!
Josh Pearson might be able to get away with those themes... but he's Josh Pearson!
iLiKE the band
But this album... god. The vocals. The lyrics. Just... no.
The vocals..
remind me a bit of My Dying Bride.
I don't agree that they're always po faced
A Rookhouse for bobby surely has a bit of irony and warmth about it...
just incredibly boring band
all surface and no feeling
vibe for vibes sake but no substance
post rock bollocks - and post rock is getting extremely tedious
brilliant band
The album has grown on me alot.
In fact win a copy here:

iLikeCars
Don't see the Mogwai/GYBE/C93 comparisons, they sound more like a poor mans Hope Of The States to me.
Very samey band, anyway.
they're samey...
...in that they've got a 'sound'. The vocals, the guitar tone, the lyrical themes. That's not a negative thing at all though, although I doubt they could stretch it over more than this album without refining.
Although the crescendo bits are very post-rocky (and their least interesting bits to my mind), their guitar tones put them closer to 80s groups like Kitchens of Distinction.
I think like its been said
they have been crystalizing their sound over the past few years. If they still sound the same on album two then by all means criticise them. But currently they're doing what they do very well, at least its got a bit of intellect and thought behind it too.
I think if any band should be accused of sub mogwai boringness
its mogwai.
I love this band...
I don't really understand exactly what the people who are slating it expected to hear.
Personally i thought it was obvious that they havent been around long enough to do the 'major depature' yet. True, i do think that the only big mistake they make is starting and finishing thier songs in a very similar way. However, it's David's lyrical mastery is what keeps me interested.
Like many other people have said, the second album will be the toughest thing for them, i.e. how many more historical figures can you write about! However, the guys have only just released this record, and i don't personally think they sound anything like mogwai etc. To me they sound like iLiKETRAiNS, and that sounds very good right now.
.
So there! ;)
iLiKEJAMiE
yeah boi!!!!
...
I thought Progress Reform was great, but having heard the new album, it's all starting to sound a bit formulaic.
Saw them in Newcastle the other night and it got a bit monotonous over the course of a full set.
Good, but not great. They have carved out enough of their own take on the post-rock genre to suggest there's something very good to come from them. They just haven't made it with this record, in my opinion.
Agreed with the comments about the lyrics too, they work much better with the ambiguity rather than having to be backed up by the actual story... just makes them sound a bit lame.
They were...
...amazing at The Cockpit last night.
As were Her Name Is Calla.
