Which album to buy?

by commandercool

In 5 days I'm getting paid a proper wage for the first time in about a year. I'd definitely like to use a part of this to buy some new music.

What albums, preferably ones released in the last 12 months, would you recommend I buy?

See my ratings for inspiration if you want :)

Thank you x

Future Of The Left

of Montreal
LCD Soundsystem

They're probably your big three...

Populuxxe

By Cutting Pink With Knives. It's got to be good.

Yes

I'll probably get this :)

I wouldn't bother

heard it yesterday and was underwhelmed to say the least. They would probably be great live, but on record they're pretty irksome. How about Marnie Stern, No Age or Pre?

i got

oh wow the other day. is populuxxe as good/better/worth getting?

populuxxe is definitely worth getting.

It's better than the first album, much more variety and more pop/electro parts.

m.i.a-kala

this town needs guns/cats cats cats split.
napoleon iiird-in debt to.

Yeah I'll probably get N IIIrd

I may see if i can blag a discounted copy next time I see him though.

Big Business - Here Come The Waterworks

It's album of the year, honest.
Plus you are making the face of a man who would enjoy Big Business in your profile pic.

definitely Of Montreal

it's now in my top albums ever ever list.

haha

of montreal are my third most-listened to artist on last fm, and that's ALL from listening to Hissing Fauna...

Sound of Silver is great, and:

Panda Bear - Person Pitch
Fireworks Night - As Fools We Are

I've heard it a few times now

and I'm loving it.

The National

Of Montreal

I notice..

.. you have listed Rival Schools in your albums on Myspace, if you like that try First Excommunications by Canadian outfit Elizabeth, its a bit like Editors/Interpol I supoose but its ace.

Other than that DARTZ/Kubichek/Biffy Clyro were all spiffing.

thsat's pretty varied taste there commandercool

try "Thugs" by Desperado, great reviews in Kerrang & RockSound and also at Rock midgets, subba-cultcha etc - it's a good album that benefits from repeat listens

or how about homegrown Leeds talent "baby machine" by This Et Al ?

My albums of the year

are probably (in this order)...

Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna...
Panda Bear - Person Pitch
Handsome Furs - Plague Park
The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
The National - Boxer

So I recommend all those, and then some dead recent releases that I've not had full time to 'absorb' yet are...

Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
Kevin Drew - Spirit If
Future Of The Left - Curses
