I actually think Blur's recent work (last three albums) is FAR superior to the stuff they did in the Britpop days. They had a lot of good singles then but not as much depth or beauty to their music.
Oh god indeed! Although having said that I don't exactly love Attack Of The Grey Lantern or Kleptomania to bits either so maybe they fit the opposite question to this thread.
the self titled lp the Beach Boys recorded in 1985 with Culture Clubs producer, Steve Levine. Awful....at least the crappy songs could have been disguised by a nice eccentric Brian Wilson synth/snare drum production like '77's 'Beach Boys Love You'.
For me...Terror Twilight by Pavement. Great songs but horribly sheened up by Nigel Godrich, making it sound far too smooth. Had it been a bit more ragged would have been better. I still like it though.
god yeah - its better than Viva Hate (yes I know this is moz) - pull yrself together nothing - 'Rank' is, well rank but no smiths album can be deemed 'bad'
Pablo Honey is embaressing - thank god however they were allowed to make another album
Hmm. Well you missed off 'You' and 'Thinking About You' which are also fantastic.
I think Pablo Honey only suffers from being badly produced - EMI were trying to make them into the British Radiohead after all, so bad producer choice.
I'd have put Kid A as an example for Radiohead, personally. If you take them out of context there are some good tracks on there, but the majority are just boring and suffer from the album having been made in such a sterile environment. Pretty much every track on there was an order of magnitude better when the whole band played them live, Idioteque being the most obvious example: Phil's live drumming over the original stagnant electronic beat totally lifts it and brings the sort of ideas to the track that Radiohead totally missed on Kid A.
Well you can probably download most of it these days. It's just not very well produced. The first 6 tracks are quality, and there's some good stuff in the second half. Probably fair to say that John Leckie could have made that album sound every bit as good as The Bends if he'd produced both of them.
What about Everlasting Gaze? (the orchestra of reverbed guitar that washes over the chorus... oooh yeah)
What about the dizzy euphoria of This Time?
What about the pretty vocals on "Scared and Profane"?
"Age of Innocence"?
True, half of it is dirge, but the other half is sublime.
i was really excited by everlasting gaze when they started playing it on the radio, which i think made the rest of the record even more depressing. True there are a few decent tracks on there (especially this time), it's just that the rest is utter gash and that it really doesnt stand up to any of the of the other pumpkins albums. In fact i wouldnt even say that it was a bad album per se, just that when it's compared to what came before it really stands out as the litter of the runt.
The band Wheat.
First two albums are fantastic but the most recent is awful. Its called something like per second. Got it on import for about £20. Avoid it.
hmmm songs for the deaf at least hung on to the quirk and rea moody depth that qotsa once had in spades, new one is....altogether meh, no quirk no fun, just dull really. disagree bout the idlewild ones tho, fair enough theyv lost that sorta buzzing punky energy (tho 100 broken windows is my fave) but there are good songs in there, i thot warnings/promises was dire at first but after multiple listens u find urself singin along
This sounds really naff, but none of Green Day's albums have disappointed me EVER! I still listen to all of them with as much vigour as I did when I was first getting into them.
I guess the first Reef album doesnt float my boat, but I love all the rest. And I get bored of Manics' "Know your Enemy" about 5 songs before the end. The beginning songs are good though.
sorry but green is arse. Island in the sun is THE worst weezer song by a light year in my opinion, I fucking hate it. whereas blue has say it aint so AND my name is jonas. tunes of the highest order, I'm one of the few who actually like Maladroit though so I dunno, maybe I have odd/bad taste.
I really like Green, 30 minutes of pure radio-pop sweetness. Sure it isn't like the older stuff, but I love it for what it is. Even if the guitar solos do follow the vocal melody in EVERY song!
"the self titled lp the Beach Boys recorded in 1985 with Culture Clubs producer, Steve Levine. Awful....at least the crappy songs could have been disguised by a nice eccentric Brian Wilson synth/snare drum production like '77's 'Beach Boys Love You'."
Manics - This is My Truth Tell me Yours. Although Know your enemy is by all accounts worse, I don't own a copy so I can't really judge.
Idlewild - Warnings/promises. Not actively bad or anything, just nothing has stood out as being particularly good on the album. should give it another chance though.

Well that's only true if you ignore the existence of 'Think Tank'. In fact you'd probably have to ignore '13' too, IMO.

Blur
Modern Life is Rubbish
Parklife

[Think Tank]
Blur is one of the truly great albums of the last decade without a doubt, but ditching Stephen Street gave us an unfocussed pile or arse.
Losing Graham resulted in a band that was no longer Blur so it's just worthless to even compare them really.
