On top of my head I have:

Slint - "Spiderland"
Cocteau Twins - "Four Calendar Caft"
June of 44 - "Engine Takes to the Water"
Slowdive - "Just for a Day"

and the usual
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - "Lift Your Skinny..."
Sigur Ros - "()"

and I haven't yet decided about Mogwai...

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Mmmmh hard to tell in a split second...
I´d say
Mogway - "Happy songs for happy people"
Mono - "Under a pipal tree"
Souvaris
Dreamend (great discovery)

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Yes I was between Mogwai's "Happy songs" and "Come on die young"... but Happy songs are maybe too happy!

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Of course!!! My Bloody Valentine... forgot about them...

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

MBV - Loveless
Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
Slowdive - Souvlaki
Radio Dept. - Lesser Matters

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Mogwai - Come on Die Young
MBV - Isn't Anything (controversial that one)

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place

Redjetson - New General Catalogue (wouldn't be releasing it if i didn't believe it!)

Sigur Ros ( )

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

I'm with you on the first two there Sean, I'd add Slowdive -Souvlaki as well. Also only just got Red Sparowes - At the Soundless Dawn but the more I play it the more I think that'll become one of my favourite as well.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Old:

MBV - Loveless
Slowdive - Souvlaki
Adorable - Against Perfection
Swervedriver - Raise
Telescopes - s/t
Chapterhouse - Whirlpool
Ride - Nowhere

New:

Air Formation - Stay Inside / Feel Everything
Amusement Parks On Fire - s/t
Hammock - Kenotic
Ulrich Schnauss - A Strangely Isolated Place

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
Slint - Spiderland

i need to expand my collection of post-rock, that is pretty much all i have. should i go for slowdive next?

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Slowdive are more on the shoegaze side, but you cant go far wrong with the album Souvlaki...

For post-rock try the new God Is An Astronaut album called All Is Violent, All Is Bright - best album i've heard this year. Also keep an ear out for a welsh band called The Voices who sound like a cross between Spacemen 3 and MBV - incredible new self titled album coming out on My Kung Fu in July...

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Yes Slowdive is a very good choice... either Souvlaki or Just For a Day...
also if you liked Slint's Spiderland then you may want to listen to June of 44...
and the same goes for () if you liked Agaetis Byrjun

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

coolio, thanks. ive been thinking about buying Souvlaki (and also ()) for a while.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Telescopes and Ride are nice choices but I wouldn't say the same for Ulrich Schnauss... I dont consider them as Shoegazer/Post rock band...

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Well, its a funny one... I would put Schnauss in with the shoegaze stuff, but on the electronica side. Some people do, some people dont. He loves his shoegaze though and are huge nods to the likes of slowdive in his music... shoegaze with keyboards instead of guitars.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Mogwai - Happy songs...
Redjetson - New General Catalogue

Would you people reccomend EITS then? I've been debating for a while as to which album to get. I don't know that much about them really. If it's any help, I do prefer Mogwai's last 2 albums to the earlier stuff.

I'm not too sure about Sigur Ros, they seem a bit too *quiet* and sound-scapey to me (for want of a better description).

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Loveless - MBV
Young Team - Mogwai
The big dig - Billy Mahonie
The Earth is not a cold dead place - Explosions in the sky

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Mono's 'Floating Cloud and Deep Red Sky...'

Tracer AMC's last album is top dollar.

The Slowdive anthology.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Ohhh tasty thread. My votes are:

Explosions in the Sky - "Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Live Forever"
Sigur Ros - "( )"
Slint - "Spiderland"
Mogwai - EP (the one with Burn Girl Prom Queen on it)
Godspeed You Black Emperor! - "Slow Riot..." EP.
Do Make Say Think - "Goodbye Enemy Airship..." or "& yet & yet"

All pretty landmark stuff I guess.

Kev, buy both EitS records, but start with "Those Who Tell The Truth..." as it's heavier and I think you'll like it more.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Does anyone have a good catch-all description for what post-rock is? Or is just anything that sounds like Godspeed and Mogwai?

It's just people ask me a lot and i never really know what to say apart from: long songs, not much vocals, no verse-chrous-verse action, quiet-quiet-LOUD...

Or have i just asnswered my own question?

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Here is what wikipedia say... and if i remember correctly the term was first coined for Bark Psychosis...

"The term post-rock was coined by Simon Reynolds in issue 123 of The Wire (May 1994) to describe a sort of music "using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes, using guitars as facilitators of timbres and textures rather than riffs and powerchords."

Originally used to describe the music of such bands as Stereolab, Disco Inferno, Seefeel, Bark Psychosis and Pram, it spread out to be frequently used for all sorts of jazz- and Krautrock-influenced, instrumental, electronica-added music made after 1994. Bands from the early 1990s such as Slint, or earlier, such as Talk Talk were influential on this genre. As with many musical genres, the term is arguably inadequate: it is used for the music of Tortoise as well as that of Mogwai, two bands who have very little in common besides the fact that their music is largely instrumental."

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Try and download some tunes of EITS first album too, 'How Strange, Innocence' is what it's called, I think. You can't buy it anywhere, but it's my favourite of them all.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Ian, buy both EITS records? How could you forget "How Strange, Innocence"? ;-)

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Arrrrgh! How many more times will this happen? I try to show up someone's mistake and someone beats me to it.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

have a listen to this lot www.jeniferever.com - just signed to the dis label, kinda like sigur ros but harder in places.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Also, Gastr Del Sol are quite nice...
but what do you people think of the dream popy shoegaze sound of Cocteau Twins? I like this dreamy sound sometimes (depending on my mood)...

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

It's gotta be Loveless.

But there was a great album by Dykehouse (called "Midrange") recently, that was good, very MBV influenced but with electronic parts.

Curve - Doppelganger.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Heh yeah - that Dykehouse album is great, especially "burden of proof"... reminded me alot of chapterhouse too.

Also, Kitchens Of Distinction - Death Of Cool is a classic.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

well id have to rock action - bit more orchestral but beeeautiful.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

This Beautiful Mess- Temper the Wind to the Shorn Lamb.
Amazing heartwrenching dutch band.

and yeah, Explosions in... first album's fucking cool.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Would you class Rachel's at post-rock? If so, 'The Sea and Bells', that's my answer. One of the most mindblowingly superb albums I've ever heard. Ace.

If not, the Godspeed 'F@etc' and Amusement Parks On Fire's s/t album.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

I wouldn't expect you to like Dykehouse mr B... i thought it was quite cheesy really, i didn't get on with it too well!

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

No ones mentioned it thus far.

the eponymous album by THE FOR CARNATION.

Everyone who has replied to this post would love it. It s a wondeful, wonderful album.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

magpieboy you're right, the For Carnation are quite good... I also liked the "Fight Songs" EP...
Nice band...
Also Ester Drang have a few very nice songs

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

welsh post-rock? on kung-fu? not mma? intriguing

favourite album is probs 'loveless' or 'lift yr skinny fists'
why hasnt no one mentioned Dirty Three?

other smaller bands:
Asobi Seksu (download 'sooner')
God is an astronaut (mentioned here)
Amusement Parks on Fire

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

The For Carnation is pretty sweet. especailly the 2nd track... when it gets really quiet in the middle.

*makes mental note to listen to it when get home from work.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

"why hasnt no one mentioned Dirty Three?"

Because nobody wanted to I guess.

I like em though. Are they post rock? I'm not sure if they are. Maybe they should be in some sub-genre with other neo-classical/instrumental quartet bands like Town & Country.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

"Are they post rock? I'm not sure if they are"

Me neither, but they are fucking ace.
Good call.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Well, the boundaries are very blurry but there are certainly connected to post rock... The same goes for Durutti Column... both are nice bands (weird sound maybe sometimes) but you can never be sure what label to assign to them...

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Explosions - The earth...
and ASMZ - Born into Trouble... as they havent been mentioned yet.

And excue my ignorance but what is the difference between shoe gazer and post-rock

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

You guys have it covered. Though Isn't Anything is better than Loveless. Like 9.1 versus 9.3 on the Pitchfork scale. But that's splitting hairs, eh?

Catherine Wheel - Chrome, it's plain fucking brilliant. 8.8.

You guys got most the others I could think of, except maybe early Lush.

I know some of yous hate 'shoegazer' but of all the genre descriptions out there I think this one nails it best! The first time I heard it was actually here on DiS about a year ago. Maybe it was sean, I dunno. Anyway, I thought it extraordinarily clever. As I've since heard it a thousand times I can no longer give sean credit for this. And as a consequence I can longer introduce him to my sister in good conscience.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Shoegazer v. post-rock. I dunno the technical definitions of either except I'll say shoegazer in layered swirling guitars whilst post-rock eg Slint is more minimalist in nature. Who's got better defintions?

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Lush - gala
Lush - spooky
Anything by Swervedriver
Curve - public fruit
Curve - doppleganger
Meanwhile, back in communist Russia... - indian ilk
Meanwhile, back in communist Russia... - my elixir, my poison

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Shoegazer:

Jakob - A Subset Of Sets
The Radio Dept. - Lesser Matters (not exactly shoegaze but still damn fine wallofnoisepop)
And MBV, natch.

Postrock:

Maserati - anything by them
Mercury Program - The Vapour Of Gasoline
This Is A Process Of A Still Life - s/t
Grails - Burden Of Hope, Redlights (great rekkids)
I guess you could class all the Rune Gramofon stuff as vaguely postrock too.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Very few of these are conventional 'post rock', if such a thing exists, but I'd recommend them all wholeheartedly to anyone interested in challenging but rewarding 'rock' music...

Godspeed You! Black Emperor- anything
Silver Mt.Zion- anything
Fly Pan Am- N'Ecoutez Pas
Can- Tago Mago
Grails- Redlights
Red Sparowes- At The Soundless Dawn
Hangedup- Kicker In Tow
Explosions In The Sky- The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place
Redjetson- New General Cataloge
Do Make Say Think- Winter Hymn, Secret Hymn, Country Hymn
Souvaris- I Felt Nothing At All
1 Mile North- Minor Shadows
1-Speed Bike- Droopy Butt Begone
Fridge- Happiness
Bardo Pond- Amanita
Jackie O-Motherfucker- The Magick Fire Music
Lightning Bolt- S/T
Sigur Ros- Ageatis Bryjun
Sigur Ros- ( )
Boris- Amplifier Worship
City of Caterpillar- S/T
Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies- Hurrah, etc
Mogwai- EP+6
Epic45- Slides

I'd also (obviously) be delighted if people checked out my band- The Exploits of Elaine (www.theexploitsofelaine.co.uk).

Stick me in the "Ulrich Schnauss is shoegazing camp" too. Gorgeous, gorgeous music.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

hmm, i forgot to mention you guys. my bad.
download fear of new york you should

and 2hrsTen
www.2hrsTen.com

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

1-Speed Bike is about as far away from post-rock as you can go...especially his Bottleskup Flenkenkmike stuff....Boris though are utterly superb

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

I've only been getting into a lot of these bands recently but i'm really enjoying them

Mogwai - Government comissions
Godspeed you Black Emperor - Lift your skinny fists
Sigur Ros - Ágætis Byrjun
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Explosions in the sky - the earth is not a cold dead place

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

I guess I've only been recently introduced to post rock...my favourites so far;

Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
Mono - 'Floating Cloud and Deep Red Sky...'
Explosions in the Sky - "Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell The Truth

(thanks to Coastal for the last 2!)

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

What's the fucking deal with Mono? I mean they're musics quite nice to listen to but surely it's so derivative they're the Oasis of the post rock world?

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

*their, John, their.

And I have the cheek to lecture people on their spelling and grammar.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

You ask me the difference between Explosions, Mono and 65 Days and all you'll get is my blank face
`:o|

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Hmmm, 65dos are quite different with all the electronic elements they thrown in. EITS definitely use the post-rock 'template' but have enough of a sound of their own to remain distinctive and sound fresh. When I first heard a Mono album (One Step More and You Die to be precise) my reaction was "Fucking hell, have I accidently bought a Come On Die Young: The Outakes".

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

I think the point of Mono, if there is one, is to take that traditional kind of post-rock to the absolute extremes. I mean, they literally take one riff and build it until their amps explode under the strain, then pull it back to nothing again. It's fun to listen to for a while, then you crave a little more variety.

That's kinda why I always liked Grails - they don't tend to do one riff to death, and their songs tend to flow and shift like Dirty Three.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

I have to agree, Mono, when they're doing their buildup to brutal noise stuff, are fucking amazing. Live while they're doing that they're one of the most devastating bands you'll ever see, but alot of their quieter pieces are utterly generic and dull. The whole template post rock format that seems to get overused so much is one of the main reasons I'm finding bands like From Monument To Masses and Hood so much more interesting than more EITS clones.

As to the original list question, erm:

Godspeed You Black Emperor! - First 3 albums
Do Make Say Think - & Yet & Yet
Slint - Spiderland
Hood - Cold House
Tortoise - Millions now living will never die
A Silver Mt Zion - Born into trouble...
Bark Psychosis - Hex

Not really post rock but appeals to a similar audience:

Don Caballero - American Don & What Burns Never Returns
Sweep the Leg Johnny - Going Down Swingin
Hella - Hold Your Horse Is
Battles - B EP
Volta Do Mar - At the speed of light or day
Rumah Sakit - both albums

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Ulrich Schnauss does make great music but he cannot be in the shoegazing side... there are many electronic elements in there and he has a very well defined highly "prioritized" beat-tempo throughout most of his songs... His sound does contain some dream pop touches though, but in overall he is MUCH closer to the electro ambient / ethereal camp than the shoegazing one...

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Mono have fantastic production and so are very listenable. But they do absolutely nothing for me. Mogwai were quite scathing about them in the Q&A section of their website recently too.

Ulrich Schnauss is certainly inspired by shoegaze (especially Slowdive), even if you don't think he is shoegaze (which I do- and RobinAC30 does too, and he puts on shows by Ulrich). He's certainly not ambient.

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

Boris - Amplifier Worship
GY!BE - f# a# (infinity)

Grails - Redlight
Do Make Say Think - Winter Hymn..
Black Ox Orkestar - Ver Tanzt?
Mogwai - Mogwai Young Team

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

caisersoze is right of course - ulrich is an electronica act. but he is so heavily influenced by shoegaze, and that comes out not only in his music but also in his live performances... in fact the first time i heard him DJ he was playing chapterhouse b-sides, curve, slowdive and even the belltower!

Re: Favorite Post Rock - shoegazer albums?

yes, of course I am not arguing that...
