Some thoughts on Fanfarlo, Ox. Eagle. Lion. Man and A.N.Other Indie Band last night at the Buffalo B

Fanfarlo are ace aren't they? I'd never seen 'em before but really did enjoy them.

Ox. Eagle. Lion. Man. annoyed me. First of all they annoyed me 'cos they pissed around for ages before actually getting on stage keeping the audience waiting and meaning I was out later than I wanted to be. I think a band pissing around and keeping people waiting smacks of arrogance and contempt for the crowd to be honest.

When they came on they annoyed me even more by coming across like a Blue Peter presenter attempting to be Nick Cave. It felt like self-consciously edgy "alternative" music wiht all the edges trimmed off to make it safe and consumable and allow a mainstream indie band to feel like they're watching something risky and dangerous whilst it isn't risky and dangerous at all. More criminally their songs weren't very memorable.

There was another band on too at the start of the evening. I don't know their names but I swear they this band that follows me around London changing their name and members but playing pretty much the same indistinguishable songs. Either that or 70% of all indie bands are indentikit which might be more plausible. Their songs were pleasant enough but they weren't very exciting.

Not sure what my point is sharing these thoughts with people but anyway...

The first band were called

Wet Paint http://www.myspace.com/wetpaintwetpaint

If you think they are following you, down't go to the Half Moon, Putney on the 12th October.

ox.eagle.lion.man

are terrible.

i'm glad someone else holds this opinion

i was mystified when i saw them, and not in a good way.

3 so far including myself

Plus the 3 other people I was with last night - they didn't like 'em either.

So of a straw poll of 6 people, 6 think they're rubbish.

I think

they're popular with fashionista indie scenesters (like the same people who liked Test-Icicles) and under-18s.

They had a decent crowd there for sure.

Some people clearly like them. But to me it just felt contrived and safe.

Listening now...

Hmmm.... It's not UTTERLY awful... Maybe it's a live thing?

Bit uninspiring perhaps?

I think Fanfarlo

are brill.

...

Good to see Fanfarlo get a mention on here. I think they're utterly wonderful. They do the melancholy yet uplifting thing so well. The brass sound I think is what gives them this. Just beautiful melodic songs.
