You're not alone!!!! I love Phoenix, one of the best bands to go and see live ever. They make me very very happy! Funkysquaredance indeed! Mmm and Thomas is lurvely.....!
Hmm, I didn't know Phoenix were French. Truth is, I don't know of many French acts. I do like a song I heard from Phoenix, though I forget the name. You know who else I like? M83, alot! Are Air French? For some reason, I believe they are, and I just love those guys!
Kyo are the worst band ever.
My country should be ashamed of producing something so incredibly awful !
You're so lucky that they're unknown out of France and Belgique.
I know absolutely fuck all about them. I picked up a single of theirs about three years ago because I really liked the artwork, but other than that, I've not got a scooby.
Is it in YOURcapacity to realise that when other people mention artists they like that YOU haven't heard of that they are not necessarily having a go at YOU.
Er, I never said you were having a go at me, and I have heard of lots of the artists you mention. I suppose the thing that pisses me off about you, is that what I see in you is something I am scared of becoming.
Someone who knows a lot about music, and loves obscure things, but has become an intolerable bore.
As it happens, I know shitloads about lots of very obscure bands, but I somehow manage to contain myself to the odd recommendation, rather than start two or more threads a day about some shit nobody knows or cares about, in a pathetic attempt to become 'grand old oracle of the fucking dis board'.
Thanks for the explanation, which does help. What you choose to see in me (a person you don't know and never will) is a creation of your own, not mine. Regarding talking about "obscure" bands: I do it deliberately to try to get people interested in those bands. I don't see what's wrong with that. They are artists that I like as much as I do The Beatles or Jimi Handrix. If you want to percieve this in a different way to how it's intended then go ahead.
I started a thread about John Fahey, and also Les Tres Bien Ensemble. Perhaps next I'll talk about Three Children Of Fortune.
"pathetic attempt to become 'grand old oracle of the fucking dis board'." Yuck!
Okay, I admit I've never heard of Jimi Handrix.....sorry, that was a cheap shot...
"I do it deliberately to try to get people interested in those bands. I don't see what's wrong with that"
It's fucking offensive, that's whats wrong with it. You've started posting on here like some fucking monk preaching on high about obscure wonders mere mortals would never have heard of. Like I said, you are trying to position yourself as some wise old master, and it stinks. It's patronising to the max and no-one with any self respect would ever think 'uh, JDTRAYNOR likes cd's of hungarian nose flute quintets playing carpenters covers, I think I'll check some of that out'
"What you choose to see in me.... is a creation of your own, not mine"
That's an attempt at an evasive cop out that I'm not going to let you take. My opinions of you are based purely on your 'educational' posts on this board, and like I said, an intense hope that I don't turn out like you.
France has stopped producing great solo artist since at least 20 years : no more Gainsbourg, Piaf, Brassens, Trenet, Montand...
With the coming of rock music, we've had people trying to ape american or english music, getting some success but being incredibly bad ( Johny Halliday, Telephone, Indochine, Noir désir, Kyo... ).
For me, France has had only two great bands :
TAXI GIRL
MARQUIS DE SADE ( later Marc Seberg )
and a handful of good bands :
Candie Prune
Call me Loretta
Kat Onoma
X-Syndicate
Vero Sego
Porcelain
Curtain
Not being an electro fan, i won't say anything about those kind of artists.
With all due respect to mssr lyle, the french have two things going for them: champagne and mayonaise.
But seriously, I dunno why the french lag so far behind. Christ, there's Latin alternative these days. From what I hear, great nightclubbing in France. But basically zip, zero in the way of alt.rock bands.
Note. My buddy (with great taste) likes Daft Punk, which I've yet to hear.
Apparently the place to be these days is either Montreal (which speaks french, non?) or Austin, Tx. Which begs the question: wtf?
maybe its a credit to the french that they haven't chosen to ape a largely english speaking style of music.
i love the french. i always thought the british approximation of a french accent was a total piss-take, but i find myself chuckling listening to air or M83's recent album's - its all "ztay like zees", "get aht, ev zee flems" etc.
anyway, ill be unoriginal and say M83, phoenix and daft punk. Vitalic's album is brill, mind.
Don't like the French because they didn't ask how high when yous told them to jump, oceanRain ?
I went to see Francois Breut a few years ago because someone I vaguely knew was supporting. She was really good, just her singing and a guitarist. One of those gigs you go to completely cold and really get a result.
No, here's the story about me and the frogs. My family had just purchased this small island outside Manhatten when outta the blue the French send us this silly statue in leiu of, like I dunno, a ba-gazillion dollars....
Seriously, I like that about the French. I like anyone who stands on principle (and yeah, the US can be bullying mo'fo's fo' shizzle!). Unfortunately, without digressing too much, the French govt had some seriously underhanded reasons why they liked the status quo in Iraq. Which they purported to be 'principle' when really it was about kickbacks and oil and same-as-it-ever-was bullshit.
I was being a little sarcastic regarding the French, cos I'm sure the gig you saw, mr cadd, was one of many good ones. And I don't need tell you cats how much I'd love to visit Europe, certainly Western Europe anyway. (I've already told you guys my half brother is from France, mm?)
As for french bands singing in english :
1°) our english teachers are so bad that french singing in english are often awful
2°) it's nearly impossible for a non-electro band singing in english to get radio airplays so they usually aren't even signed.
I can understand what you likes in Francoise Breut. She's part of a 'nouvelle scene francaise' with people like Keren Ann, Cali, La grande Sophie who try to mixed english influences with more traditional french music the same way Dominique A try do to it 10 years ago.
stereolab's french? never knew that ... but oh well i got their new essential cd it's like a complilation of some of their unrealeased songs and what not and 1 dvd. it's alrite... other french bands: phoenix and daft punk
well there is this other band that isn't really french but is from a french label Panico a few songs from their 2005 album subliminal kill is pretty good... they play post punk
I might be wrong but i think les tres bien ensemble are a spanish ( or at least a majority of them is ) band who sings in french because they have a big love for 50/60s french pop music ( like April March has too ).
Which explained why they play Benicassim.

are you counting electro/house bands? cause there's a few...
Serge Gainsbourg is a legend.
Re: Favourite French band
Even thought they are extremely known, but oh well they are addictive with their little emo videos :D
Are M83 french? Yes i am ashamed at my lack of knowladge...

JD, is it in your quite magnificent powers to start a thread that doesn't smack of pomposity or self congratulation for superior musical knowledge?

Yet more oil deciding the agenda....
Erm yeah, back on topic, i dont know many french bands whatsoever so its either serge gainsborough or air for me.
Think serge wins for being sampled on a folk implosion track.
unless i can have the girl who was in stereolab before she died? She was french wasnt she?
