I'm so confused right now, it's unbelievable. DO I BUY IT? DO I PAY IT? DO THEY DESERVE MY MONEY? HOW MUCH SHOULD I GIVE? SHALL I JUST WAIT FOR THE PHYSICAL COPY?
1. There are no contact telephone numbers for problems with orders, everything is email only.
2. Currency convertOr? Radiohead can't afford to pay someone to proof-read their site?
3. Once you get to the 'pay' on digital download and put in, say a tenner, there are no options to get out of that payment page. No 'home' no 'change order'.
i forgot i could get this exited about new albums. fucking hell. i hope this is for real, i am in disbelief. AND YOU CAN CHOOSE HOW MUCH YOU PAY FOR IT??
in interviews for a while now. I guess the download album is for anyone, and if youre a big fan you can buy the shit if you feel like it, but still get the album with everyone else.
So you'll still get it on same day as everyone else, but you'll get physical stuff too.
Seems like a brilliant idea to me actually. Theyre making it worth buying the physical copies by giving it away as that set, but if people just want the music for free they can have it.
Whether or not the music is pioneering this time round, we'll have to wait and see, though from what i've heard live they seem to have, ironically, gone "a bit coldplay". Hopefully they'll have rectified that in the studio.
But the way they've chosen to sell this is really brilliant.
Finally making it worth buying a physical copy of an album again, but you can also just download it for free if you're only interesting in the music.
It's basically really brilliant of them, and, well, i'm in love with radiohead again.
It would be nice to see other bands doing stuff like that, but i fear only bands of radiohead's size have the liberty of doing this because of their financial status (fucking loaded)

"Finally making it worth buying a physical copy of an album again"
I don't think Radiohead did this! There's still plenty of nice packaging etc etc etc that make lots of albums worth buying. People are just greeeedy now. Think how many people are going to pay £0 for the download compared to the number of people who will pay any money at all for anything. It's sort of sad. But anyway that's the fault of the people, not Radiohead with their nice box and hopefully non-sucky album.
box set which has 2 vinyls, a cd (with more songs), photos and a HARDBACK book, yadda, yadda.
The point is, if you want just the music, pay as much or as little as you want. If you want something special then the option is there but it's not being forced onto you.
I love this SO MUCH. They've cut out all of the dying music industry. The labels, the retail market, Tescos and the fucking like. This really is how it should be done. Let the band reap all the rewards of their hard work, not a percentage cut.
too early to start speculating but I was just thinking about whether or not other bands will follow. Like say if some of the biggest acts in the world decided to do this, become totally independent, what would that mean for the industry itself? Exciting times lay ahead
Oh and I completely agree. Their headline slot at V probably bankrolled this entire operation...
what I assume they've done is that they haven't started the production of the vinyls and CDs yet, meaning that they can release it digitally now instead of it being inevitably leaked during the pressing proceedure. Hence why the physical thing will take a few months.
if people start arguing about
box sets and pretty artwork
and stuff
music = art = should be free
if you are an artist you should
want as many people as possible
to hear your music, and you should
acknowledge that you aren't owed
anything for it
obviously it's maybe ironic that
radiohead are doing this having
probably made a shitload so can
confortably afford it. but if it
starts a trend then so be it.
it's actually pretty funnny
they've done a £40 box set
as they have the kind of fans
who will pay it
I just thought that
you'd downloaded
some nasty version of
internet explorer
Anyway the artists can do whatever they want with the music. People downloading it for free when the artist intended it to be in a higher quality format or a box or whatever isn't cool really. What is cool:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YE9Kthyaco
I think people should
help out the artists in some way
At least the ones who aren't uber rich
already
Even just a congratulatory email
To say they like it
I suppose 'any artist
worth their salt'
would continue making it
regardless
Radiohead are fine doing this, because they're saying - listen to it on mp3, pay what you like.
I could understand some other musician people getting a bit angry about people listening to the equivalent of a colour photocopy of their canvas. This is nothing like Ulrich-sympathising mind.
i have ever lived through.
well, maybe not, but this is unreal. what they have done, the idea, the concept, the entire thing...it is so unreal, and fresh, and innovative.
oh my.
this entire concept is far beyond, everything any other band have ever done, or ever could do.
the entire thing makes sense now. the whole v thing, and all the weird codes and fakes.
it is so clever, that the more you thing about it, the more genius it seems.
i really hope it is a good album.
this could either be the album of the decade, or the biggest dissapointment of my life. no where in between
I think the fact that they've announced it right before its released will mean people's expectations wont be totally concrete by the time its out, though. Very savvy in that respect too.
like a bitch. I don't care about eating, drinking or going out this week - this exists, and that's all that matters.
The only thing is, once it arrives, it's bound to be shrinkwrapped...and that will lead to countless "do I dare open it, or preserve it forever in all its plastic-covered glory like the beautiful artefact it is" questions. What to do?!
not exactly "OMGZ GROUNDBREAKING GENIUSSSSS!!11" to release your album on the internet for free. but on the other hand, fuck talking about anything else other than IN TEN DAYS I WILL BE LISTENING TO NEW RADIOHEAD.
but then you need to be Radiohead to do something like that and anyone care or pay attention, or for it to make any impact.
You can promise by 10.30am tomorrow anyone working in a record label (especially anyone working in one that doesn't have much of a clue but lots of money) will be talking about 'the new model', innit.
Still, new Radiohead - ace. And it looks like for now they're doing it without a label?
If you're an American, that's $80. That's a lot of money. If they'd work out something where they just sell two CDs (why do I need the vinyl too??!!), that would be ideal.
.
www.radiohead.com redirects to it too.
I think
it means that the new record is out on the 3rd December.

Hello everyone.
Well, the new album is finished, and it's coming out in 10 days;
We've called it In Rainbows.
Love from us all.
Jonny
i'm excited
i was just about to go to sleep as well...
I've already had too much caffiene tonight
seriously, im not gonna sleep
Fucking hell!
10 days.
What a fucking shock.
But its £40 for a physical copy of it...
Fucking radiohead... I'll probably end up paying for it as well as the download.
Seriously, im actually shaking out of excitement/rage
40 fucking quid!
if you add the download to your basket
it has a box to input your own price, and a message that says "it's up to you".
hmm.
I think the site's been hacked or something...
I'm gonna hold out for a few days and see what happens.
hahah
I had a feeling they'd do something like this
it's how I think music should be, free, but
you can donate if you want
wait, that's fucking 10 days?!?!?
*screams*
ive put in
£0 0p
ARG!!!
I'm so confused right now, it's unbelievable. DO I BUY IT? DO I PAY IT? DO THEY DESERVE MY MONEY? HOW MUCH SHOULD I GIVE? SHALL I JUST WAIT FOR THE PHYSICAL COPY?
FUCKING RADIOHEAD!!!
they're loaded
pay nowt for it
then, if it's amazing and you feel
they deserve some money, but it again
Fuck it...
As soon as my wages come in, i'm buying the disc set.
you get
2 CDs - In Rainbows and extra CD with more songs and digital artworks
1 vinyl - In Rainbow and extra songs
Artwork and lyrical booklets
Hardcover book
FUCKING RADIOHEAD TAKING MY FUCKING MONEY DAMN YOU
I feel like i'm fighting a battle with the fanboy inside of me.
Looks fishy to me
So, am not convinced it's real.
2. Radiohead seem to like bad spelling
unless someone's hacked the whole of radiohead.com, then it's real.
But
look how sexy the discs look......
This is cool
I don't like Radiohead. But this is cool.
yeah im strangely feeling the excitment
Yeah
Literally a day after the hoax. How fucking brilliant of them.
It would be amazing if the hoax was masterminded by them for press or something.
...
http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/2445276#r2445470
:D
haha, I know.
Fuck it, this has brought it all back. Theyre amazing.
everything
about this is so so SO SO SO spot on.
holy freaking shit.
holy freaking shit.
holy freaking shit.
holy freaking shit.
holy freaking shit.
holy freaking shit.
i forgot i could get this exited about new albums. fucking hell. i hope this is for real, i am in disbelief. AND YOU CAN CHOOSE HOW MUCH YOU PAY FOR IT??
again, holy freaking shit.
IT'S A DOUBLE ALBUM
(if you pay £40)
I'm still a bit on edge about this. I'm gonna wait till tomorrow to see what goes down.
if you put £0.00
it doesnt ask for credit card details
or anything, so I dont see the risk
just dont put
a password you use for the email or anything
important
Oh fuck
I PUT THE SAME PASSWORD THAT I USE HERE.
Yeah
Still, no harm in waiting till I have the money. I owe it to myself to buy this thing. YOu get a download code with the box set too.
Why would they
let the digital downloads become available two months before the box set?
Don't get it.
Cos theyve been going on about free distribution of music and stuff
in interviews for a while now. I guess the download album is for anyone, and if youre a big fan you can buy the shit if you feel like it, but still get the album with everyone else.
hmm...
I don't like it. I nearly paid the money, then changed my mind...
It wouldn't accept my W.A.S.T.E login details, and it says that the site is owned by W.A.S.T.E. It all seems a bit fishy...
I want to buy it!
£40
Right....
Why?
because its radiohead!
I owe them so, so much.
£40 in fact!
It's cheaper than buying the recent Boris vinyl. That was £110 or something stupid.
Plus, all that packaging looks really nice too
maybe my dad will go half and half on it with me...
this is the most amusing thing ever
people arguing over £40 thing when it is
FREE if you want it.
Im pretty sure if you give it a while
they will end up putting out a sole
CD or Vinyl or something. Just get
the download first innit.
You get a download code too
So you'll still get it on same day as everyone else, but you'll get physical stuff too.
Seems like a brilliant idea to me actually. Theyre making it worth buying the physical copies by giving it away as that set, but if people just want the music for free they can have it.
I fucking love radiohead.
In many ways
it would be quite funny if after all the furore the music materialised and totally sucked donkey wang.
I think it will.
Whether or not the music is pioneering this time round, we'll have to wait and see, though from what i've heard live they seem to have, ironically, gone "a bit coldplay". Hopefully they'll have rectified that in the studio.

I basically copied that off a radiohead board i'm furiosly posting on just now
hence the "edit/delete message"
.
"Finally making it worth buying a physical copy of an album again"

It's not a rip off anyway
for what you get. Unless they send it in a flimsy piece of shit mailer and it turns up on your doorstep all knackered that is!
some ebay sellers take note
Hmmm.
I think there will be more to this than meets the eye..
its a lush
box set which has 2 vinyls, a cd (with more songs), photos and a HARDBACK book, yadda, yadda.
The point is, if you want just the music, pay as much or as little as you want. If you want something special then the option is there but it's not being forced onto you.

Yeah, its really brilliant of them.
As i said above though, only a band of their financial situation and popularity could pull it off. It's a real shame.
perhaps
too early to start speculating but I was just thinking about whether or not other bands will follow. Like say if some of the biggest acts in the world decided to do this, become totally independent, what would that mean for the industry itself? Exciting times lay ahead

This is my guess... hmmm
.
the good thing about it is that its like a good old fashioned, pre-napster release - ie everyone hears it the fucking day its released! Nostalgia!!
Indeed!
Leaks are really very very boring. By the time the album's actually released everyone's already bored of it and downloading the next leaked thing.
exactly
this is the first radiohead release that HASN'T been leaked, I think, since OK Computer. This is fantastic.
this has the possibility of turning into a ridiculous thread
if people start arguing about
box sets and pretty artwork
and stuff
music = art = should be free

my writing in verse thing
is getting a bit silly
you've actually been doing that
on purpose?

oh my.
i hope the music is good. we shall see.
fuck.
its not that amazing
it's interesting
but (obviously I didnt think of it, to suggest
that would be ludicrous)
but I've mentioned that's what bands should do
on here loads of times
like, free music, paypal account for donations or whatever
plus loads of bands give their music away free
already
it is though
this entire concept is far beyond, everything any other band have ever done, or ever could do.
the entire thing makes sense now. the whole v thing, and all the weird codes and fakes.

this could either be the album of the decade, or the biggest dissapointment of my life. no where in between
eh?
it's something people have done before, ableit
done in quite a clever viral marketing kinda way
exactly
that is what makes it so genius.
it is such a bold statement.
no one has done something like this on such a large scale before.
in theory, they could make absolutely no money out of this.
i wonder if they will tour.
I think its gonna be a dissapointment, sadly.
I really hope not. Whether or not its good, its still monumental already.
.
I think the fact that they've announced it right before its released will mean people's expectations wont be totally concrete by the time its out, though. Very savvy in that respect too.
yup
hopefully this is the start of something BIG
I really need to get to bed...
I swear george michael did this as well actually
LOLZ
it keeps saying my security code doesn't match...
Ordered
like a bitch.
What to do?!
buy 2!
i dont even like radiohead.
Then can you buy me one?
Please?
erm:

not exactly "OMGZ GROUNDBREAKING GENIUSSSSS!!11" to release your album on the internet for free. but on the other hand, fuck talking about anything else other than IN TEN DAYS I WILL BE LISTENING TO NEW RADIOHEAD.
its groundbreaking on its scale
theyre probably the biggest band in the world and could make millions if they did it the usual way.
though I suppose theyre already loaded so it doesent matter... But the principle remains.
.
I'm not looking forward to the fact that around 7am tomorrow morning the internet is going to be subject to an unseen level of rabid fanboyery :)
that's really really smart
but then you need to be Radiohead to do something like that and anyone care or pay attention, or for it to make any impact.
You can promise by 10.30am tomorrow anyone working in a record label (especially anyone working in one that doesn't have much of a clue but lots of money) will be talking about 'the new model', innit.

hahaha this is ridiculous.
why are people wetting their pants over this?
Because it's Radiohead
duhhh
Sigh

it's still 80 bucks if you're british...
we're just more used to getting ripped off.
This
may interest some. Personally, i think I'm gonna wait to hear them but still...
http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=10&title=radiohead_hear_the_new_album_here&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
Not a big fan,
but this is very awesome of them.
i'm suprised
hard-fi didnt think of doing this first :D
