What is a 'merit' award? An award for generally deserving an award? The 'thanks for trying' award? Maybe they're admitting he deserves an award but know their readers won't vote for him.
I know trying to find logic in the Q Awards is a futile search, but still.
A Merit Award
is a little yellow badge that says merit on it, accompanied by a small paper certificate declaring who received the merit and for what.
Mine were often for being ace at spelling, or being helpful or shit like that.
I do not know why Ryan Adams got a Merit Award.

watched the vodafone live awards last night on tv and i was shocked by just how shit all the bands that were featured on it were. I mean Q has always been made for old men growing old disgracefully clinging onto any semblance that they once were cool. It's the only way I can excuse the awfulness.

After the Vflive I watched some mobile breaking bands thing with Alex Zane- I think Jo Whiley has had botox. A lot of crap bands on there tho but quite funny when Lily Allen got one of the lead singers phone numbers and then couldn't remember his name?! I never liked her, but that was quite amusing. I'll remember that next time I hear 'Smile' played in Asda along with the Kooks and the killers efforts.
That Manics song...
has been one of the best mainstream singles released in a while though. I'm pleased about that at least.

To be perfectly honest I don't find the 'winners' that bad overall.
I was expecting alot worse and alot of them do make perfect sense when you consider the magazines readership. Also it's Q what did most of you expect? Pagan Wanderer Lu & Deerhoof to win? At the end of the day, most people are hardly ever happy with these type of things and the main reason for their existance is to increase record sales.
