I've listened to the first half about 3 or 4 times through now. I only managed to listen up to "All I need" on my good system this morning, so decided I wouldnt taint the rest by listening to it fragmented over the course of the day.
IT's really brilliant. Much better than I thought it would be. All I need is one of the softest most lovely songs ever. 15 steps is fantastic. Bodysnatchers drops the ball a bit, but its still really good. A return of the "jonny solo"! if only slightly.
And yeah, Nude and arpeggi are both amazing, as suspected.
Doesnt seem to have the same cohesivness as the others though, but that might present itself on further listening.
still pretty brilliant though. videotape is lovely, though i kinda missed the booming kick drum like when they do it live.
The amount of space on the album is amazing.
so far, 7 or 8 out of ten, but i still havnt listened through in one go yet...
Radiohead are a band that I've never taken the time to listen to extensively, and when a band has clearly developed their 'own sound' (which is true, despite the progression from album to album) as Radiohead have, any new album listened to 'out of sequence' so to speak is always going to be a grower.
Caveats aside though, I like it so far. Its not 'fucking amazing' yet, and Nude isn't as good as people seem to think. Still not finished yet and it could still swing either way for me.
How much did people pay for it btw? I chose the method of hitting 3 random number keys and came out with 3.54, which rather handily came up to 3.99 with the surcharge...
Nope, that's true. Unfortunately it has a legendary history. I think it's been on the cards since pre-OKC days and wasn't it supposed to go on the soundtrack to The Avengers movie but they decided they couldn't record it how they wanted or something?
Anyway, it's been a long time and people who've heard in live or on bootlegs have been going on about it too long.
'It has lots of sparse beats, incomprehensible wailing and dreamy orchestration, and not much in the way of wailing guitars, emotional punch or, well, good tunes.
Like their last three albums (and Thom Yorke's solo work), I will probably listen to it a few times, feel that there must be some greater artistic excellence that I'm not fully appreciating, then forget about it.'
There's some lovely moments, but you need hooks and tunes to pull the whole thing together and keep you interested. A few nice moments isn't really enough for a band like Radiohead
"Maybe Radiohead need a record company. Maybe they need someone to tell them their output is getting a bit samey now and isn't actually that good, and maybe they should try something else."
clearly knows what they're talking about. Because record company execs are well known arbiters of useful advice when honing one's artistic vision.
I'm downloading now
Expect a mini review at around half 5 this afternoon.
Ok,

So far, 8/10
stay tuned...
Seriously? what happened to reckoner
its entirely different from the old version...
I was hoping for "RECKONER! BACK BACK BACK!"
Second half isnt as good.
still pretty brilliant though. videotape is lovely, though i kinda missed the booming kick drum like when they do it live.
The amount of space on the album is amazing.
so far, 7 or 8 out of ten, but i still havnt listened through in one go yet...
and also
it sounds great in 160kbps
best bit of the album:
at the start of arpeggi when thom goes "Hnnnnghhhh"
sounds like the klaxons
Oh
dear
You could just add your user reviews as the news item suggests
Somewhere over there --------------->
.
today is a great day for mankind
just started listening...
(for the first time)
Just started also
Awesome...love the BOC-esque bits on 15 Step (I'm a sucker for that)
.
it's really great, actually....
first 2 tracks
are a bit of a racket. Nude is brilliant
There's some good stuff and some bad stuff.
Most of it sounds more like 'The Eraser' than 'Hail to the Thief'. I like The Eraser but I kind of hoped this would be something different.
House of Cards was mega dull on first listen. Maybe it's a grower.
you stole my review!
the bit about it being more like eraser I mean...
anyhow
halfway through second listen it sounds like it's going to take a number of listens to really appreciate it
Thom's voice sounds great all the way through though
there's a number of hints and echoes of 1967 (fleetwood mac and the beatles) tunes bizarrely enough and at least two self-referential musical passages
hmm
this is why I don't write reviews
One more thing though. It being Radiohead, without the artwork it definitely feels like there is something missing
I've just downloaded it
The first song is a bit of a racket...
i got 5 tracks in
had to start work tho
sounds good so far!
my internet at home has broken itself since last night
AWESOME
by the time i get to hear the bugger everyone else will be bored of it
IT ROCKS
"racket", my arse.
Racket isn't necessarily a bad thing
in fact, I'm quite liking it and I'm not a big Radiohead fan
i got it off
a rapidshare link earlier :D
...
'snot as good as ok computer.
everybody been enjoying... :)
i've been lying flat on my bed in a daze :)
I'm offically single for the next 2 days
as my boyfriend will in bed with this.
A friend emailed me this morning asking if I wanted a download, I'll get it when I get home.
It's official.
It's really really good.
/\ this
nude is fucking amazing.
House of Cards
is the one that stands out for me so far but that's probably because it sounds a lot like Fleetwood Mac's Albatross
I'm trying to listening critically but I can't detect anything negative about it at all so far
thats coz its fucking CLASS
Nude. As predicted. Is the best thing since seeing it live. And... then some
it is indeed classy
in both concept and execution
well done the 'head
Nude's a bit of a let down after the first two
They're all fast paced and edgy and it's just sort of sloooow.
Fast songs 'ftw'.
Are you kidding
Nude's fucking beautiful! Not all music has to be "fast paced and edgy" to have value.
No it doesn't
But the first two songs put me in the mood for fast and edgy so Nude comes across a bit 'meh'.
I did my OMG IT'S RADIOHEAD time in the 20th Century. It's hard to get as worked up these days.
fair enough
Just finished my first listen
and I'm sure my opinion will change over time, but I quite like it.
Nude, 15 Step and All I Need jumped out at me as the stand-outs.
Can't be arsed to fork out for the discbox, but I'll definitely buy the regular CD release whenever that happens.
yep
all i need is my fave after 1 listen.
After repeated listens to it
I have decided All I Need is brilliant. I'm stuck on it now
RAWRRR!!!!
eets ace.
damnworkdamnworkdamnwork
dmnwrk :(
do you remember that time someone said Radiohead were crap?
And i just laughed and pointed towards the future...
twice
...
I just skipped House of Cards on a second run through the album
That track is really quite dull.
it took me ages to like the live version
so i reckon it will be a grower
roll on December 4th
when hopefully i shall have recived a very early christmas present of the full album
parts 1 and 2
I get the feeling
that the second CD is intended as "B-Sides" to singles that will probably never be released.
anyone else's
code not arrived yet? (tapping desk impatiently...)
is it not the third?
but i can't wait for that week:
my birthday
The box set
CSS, Justice and Metronomy
ATFUCKINGP!!!!
they send them out on the 3rd
so theyll arrive 4th or 5th surely.
unless you tip the postal services
ps.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kCKob1YKOU
hes playing it for himself. noone watching
I'm skipping a lecture for this
and so far, I'm just happy it's here.
Listening through now
Radiohead are a band that I've never taken the time to listen to extensively, and when a band has clearly developed their 'own sound' (which is true, despite the progression from album to album) as Radiohead have, any new album listened to 'out of sequence' so to speak is always going to be a grower.

Anyway, it's been a long time and people who've heard in live or on bootlegs have been going on about it too long.
I have had the advantage of never hearing it before
Does that make my opinion count more or less?
The Avengers movie?!?! Maybe they just saw what a pile of shite it was going to be and decided to jump the ship before it sank...
Wasn't that Big Boots?
Isn't it the same song, though?
OK
after the third listen I can officially declare that the bitrate now pissing me off
I stuck on my CD of OK computer for reference and I did a big sad face
:(
yeah
160Kbps? No thanks. They could have at least bumped it up to 192...
Oh well, one way of getting people to buy the CD i suppose...
Yeah
It sounds absolutely gash. On a positive note, you can 'hear' how good it WILL be on CD...
that was painless to d/l
fastness
oooogh i love this
LOVELY
I'm only
halfway through my first listen and think it's fucking fantastic.
that is all.
bodysnatchers reminds me
of blonde redhead
75%
i'm actually damp.
Arpeggi =
!!!
!!!!
oh. my god.
So good.
75%
i'm actually damp.
hahaha!
seconded.
think this will be like the longest thread in DIS history by the end of the day.
so far well better than hail to the thief for me.
.
I HAVEN'T REVCEIVED MY EMAIL YET

STOP POSTING HERE
And write your reviews...
http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/2471504
I am so impatient to get home and download this
Argghh!
So far...
I'm preferring it to Hail To The Thief. I'm on my 3rd Listen.
Wtf
Im sure Reckoner is meant to go "POW POW POW POW POW" or something...and there was a 20 second cameo by muse on that track.
yeah
reckoner sounds like an almost completely different song to the live version I've had for ages.
is that open to staff?
i know that we can, technically, do user reviews, but can we WIN WIN WIN whilst at work?
Not to staff
You'll have to start a secret user account and not let me find out...
Give me my
download key dammit!
Anyone else still not got theirs. I'm thinking probably yes..
just re-buy it
for 0.00 and apparently you just go straight to the download link.
Happy days
The sound is really lush (bitrate or no). Halfway through second listen and it's getting better and better.
My only complaint
is that that bit at the beginning of Nude doesn't go on for the whole song. It sounds lush.
But yes, wow. I look forward to hearing this on big speakers when I get to the union...
oh wow, this is amazing
staying up was a good idea after all. now to wander round oxford trying to find one of them to hug awkwardly.
No artwork
GET OUT! We'll have no Hard-Fi fans in here
entirely as a test
I re-bought it for 0.00 and now have a spare activation code if anyone needs it.
pm me.
i don't like it that much
sounds a bit 'dull' so far
this has gone now
BUT it proves the point that if yr whinging that you've preordered and not got yr link you can just buy it again.
Am I the only one...
....who thinks this album isn't very good?
I couldn't identify a single melodic hook in the entire record.
The only track I can remember anything about is Videotape.
I'll give it a few more listens of course, but it's quite clearly not even close to OK Computer, The Bends, Kid A, or even Hail to the Thief.
BBC bloke doesn't
although he seems to spend most of his piece reviewing his ideas about how much to pay: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7037194.stm
i agree
on 2nd listen now
its still a bit meh
This bit from the BBC
Is pretty much what I thought:
'It has lots of sparse beats, incomprehensible wailing and dreamy orchestration, and not much in the way of wailing guitars, emotional punch or, well, good tunes.
Like their last three albums (and Thom Yorke's solo work), I will probably listen to it a few times, feel that there must be some greater artistic excellence that I'm not fully appreciating, then forget about it.'
There's some lovely moments, but you need hooks and tunes to pull the whole thing together and keep you interested. A few nice moments isn't really enough for a band like Radiohead
yeah
i'm disappointed in the lack of 'melodic hooks'. that's definitely the main thing I look for in a radiohead album.
Yes
and anyone who says:
"Maybe Radiohead need a record company. Maybe they need someone to tell them their output is getting a bit samey now and isn't actually that good, and maybe they should try something else."
clearly knows what they're talking about. Because record company execs are well known arbiters of useful advice when honing one's artistic vision.
But...
...this:
"Maybe they need someone to tell them their output is getting a bit samey now and isn't actually that good, and maybe they should try something else."
is probably true
Who else is gonna tell them?
