Why do bands need to be signed in the first place? A lot of decent bands I can think of have released singles/albums on small labels with no formal agreement. Once you sign to a big label you are firmly in the world of commerce and (unless previously established) made to do stuff you don't want to.
i took the "unsigned" bit to mean bands that don't even have THAT - i.e. all the awesome bands out there who rarely get recognition even from the smallest labels, who kick seven bells out of a lot of the stuff which gets picked up even though they have no independent backing, however long- or short-term.
Ah I was half joking. But in this day and age it's a real piece of piss to put your own record out, you retain complete creative control, and nobody but the band takes any money from it.
true 'dat - but coming from a self-managed band there are some other things which a label can help out with apart from the actual putting out of the record, just in terms of promotion & organisation... stuff that's hard to fit in if the band is already busy writing/rehearsing/earning cash and stuff!
Me too, I'd recommend any band stay well away from my label! But I was stung badly by a distributor going under, taking ALL my money with them, which stopped me putting out any records for 2 years. Them's the dangers of not doing everything yourself.
We managed to break even on our last release (the SR50 compilation) just by selling it at gigs and off our website, maybe it helps selling it so cheap (50 songs, £5) but it was a much much better experience than any of my previous records.
I guess for a band it depends what you're looking for in life. You won't sell 5 million of anything by doing it yourself, but then you won't get bossed around by some pretentious twat who works at a proper label either and thinks they know better than you what you want to sound like.
yeah i guess there's a big downside too - whenever we gig upstairs at the garage the sound guy's always playing the SR compilations. fucking awesome. joeyfat especially. i'd love to gig with those guys (hint hint!)
how well does the CD sell on your website then, as opposed to using a distributor?
We've probably sold about 75 off the site, we've done most at gigs, it's lot easier to part with a crisp fiver and walk away with a shiny new record than have to pay all the bloody paypal and postage fees etc and also get round to buying it.
What's your band then? As you restrained yourself from promoting yourself earlier I think it's time...
As for Joeyfat, because their singer's at college it's almost impossible to get them to do gigs unfortunately.
i've been following them for a couple of years now and I still can't believe that they are not signed. They are stronger and tighter than ever before. I saw them support The Bluetones last week and they pissed all over the 'Tones!
oh and i'm really enjoying Nebraska too actually. Don't know their website and Metro Riots at times.
thewarn "Possibly not. I may have been harsh. However, it was their first post, so I was a little suspicious.... still am, in fact..."
i've bn lookin at dis for ages i just never signed up, just had a kool idea of collating a load of good unsigned bands cos they r hard to come across arent they?? anyway ask um marilyninthesky sheez my band mate (and we're not in elle milano).
Now you've replied, yes, consider my doubts quashed. Street teamers never reply.
Apologies for judging you so harshly on your first post! Just looked a lil' sus, that's all.
Oh, and hi! Welcome to DiS and possibly the first of many misunderstandings!
The Fall - OK they can be a little difficult to work with but seriously, the new album is nearly out as well but might only be in the US unless a new record company is found.

Re: Unsigned bands that should be signed
I watched this band the other night in Brighton. They were ace!!....sound bunch of lads too - I went to school with Jamie.
The other band that played that night - The Happiness - (also mates of mine) were really good too.
