Hello,
I've a 2 year old Dell laptop that I'd like to be able to hook up to my TV so I can play mario kart with my mates. I'm a bit clueless about this but when I try and hook it up the display is in grainy black and white and flickers a lot. Anyone know what I should do to solve this?
Hmm, does it have an s-video out?
I'm managed to hook up a laptop this way..
What outputs have you got on the laptop?
S video and a monitor port
I think s-video is the way to go but I don't know if there's some settings or the like I should change
Apple TV?
I don't know what that is
You'll
need a mac....but it's a new thing Apple has brought out that enables you to wirelessly watch whatever is on your Mac via the TV......all your photos, music and vids etc etc....it's very clever.
I won't be buying a mac
there'a got to be a way to do this with a shitty dell
I've got the link for the mac thing on my mac
but can't afford it right now.
if you get a mac I can help you but otherwise, talk to TheoGB
...
Most decent graphics cards are configured to output to second mponitors and TVs - you just have to use the right lead.
However, you'll probably find a full screen emulator display won't work on TVs. That's been my experience at least anyway.
any idea what lead this might be?
Even if I can just get the PC version of Worms to work I'll be happy
Anyone?
The Internet is no help, it just confuses me
I know what you mean
can't get my head around this site
www.farthammer.com
I won't be clicking on that
yes you will
curiosity will get the better of you
no
curiosity always gets me into trouble
do
you have s-video(tv) to scart(tv) or s video to s-video(tv).
cos i had this problem and its because the scart on my tv didn't support s-video, so it was black and white. And on the newer t.v. only one of the 4 scart inputs supported s-video so try it in all of them.
if you are doing s-video to s-video im not sure. Again on my tv if its in black and white i just have to press tv-av a few times then it comes to colour.
ignore
the first brackets i meant s-video on your pc going to scart on the tv. or s video inputs both
I might mess around a bit more
I thought I might have to change the settings on the laptop
Easy Rob's comment is probably the correct one
My TV has a dedicated S-Video input and that's on the front of the TV (all Sony's used to do it this way, I think they may still do) as this is for your camcorder to connect.
There are two SCARTs on the back: one has normal mode and RGB mode (mmmm, for good DVD plyback) and the other has normal mode and S mode, for S-Video input.
Other things to check, make sure your laptop knows the second screen is a TV and more importantly that it's outputting a 50hz PAL signal, not an NTSC one because some TVs don't seem to recognise NTSC properly and go black and white as you've indicated.
How do I make sure its sending out a PAL signal
I'm using windows xp sp1
Well
I've not done this on mine as it isn't worth it on my TV. Essentially:
You connect the TV and then you should still have the laptop screen running. YOu want to make it 'clone' the desktop.
Right click on the laptop desktop and go 'Properties' and then Settings. You should see both displays shown next to each other.
Make sure that it knows display 2 is a TV and when you click on it then do 'Advanced' or click on whatever buttons show for it and see what settings it has. There should be a way to tell it what sort of TV you're using.
Cheers Theo
and all above
