Portishead slag Radiohead

Portishead's Geoff Barrow has launched a missive in the direction of Radiohead.

The spout, encased within a 'blog posting titled ‘Amy gets caught sober… or some other shit news’, starts as an attack and ends up defending that attack.

En garde:

“So then.......music for free is it? well fuking great. so if you get our album for nothing or very little , does that mean i can get my boiler fixed for free... --------i could tell the plumber that its all for the love of sharing and its to combat the evil money grabbing corperation that is zanussi. ...............im sure he will understand.

"also im not having a pop at radiohead they are fuking good and clever with it. anyways im sure it will all become clear at some point.”

Portishead curate the next ATP event at Minehead in December.

His typos are worse than mine and I come from a line of failed bands

what's HIS excuse - the 2nd Portishead album??!?

That's a little hyperbolic

All Geoff has done is spilt some shit on a page.

it was free

I didn't pay a thing

free

of tunes, you mean!

unexpected.

i love both bands though.

"Portishead slag Radiohead"

"also im not having a pop at radiohead they are fuking good and clever with it. anyways im sure it will all become clear at some point.”
Slightly misleading headline?

If your plumber chooses to fix your boiler for free...

Then that's up to him. But not all plumbers will choose to do so.

Therefore

It's unreasonable to expect every plumber to fix it for free...
Oh, you know.

not to be

slightly off topic, but if anyone remembers the media slurry about the last harry potter book. It was sold for five pounds, which is apparently the price radiohead fans paid for the album(when it wasn't free).
It was the book equivalent of giving it away for free, since there's probably a reason all other hardbacks are £15. Maybe she did it first.

im sure it wasnt anything to do with her

more the shops competing for the market share of the book, and hoping that people buy other things when they come into the shop, thus covering the loss they made on the book.

not to be

slightly off topic, but Prince gave away is latest album free with a newspaper. It was just a couple of months ago. He did it without his label's consensus too. And it was the physical object - no crappy-160kpbs-download-with-a-regular-cd-soon-to-come bullshit. You couldn't offer more even if you wanted. But nobody said he was going to save music. Poor Prince :'-(

its cos it came with the mail

you cant do good through evil means

The thing with the Prince album

was that he actually got paid almost £1 million by the Daily Mail for the privelige. Given that his albums don't sell fuck all these days it was fairly irritating seeing him being lauded in some places as 'giving his music away'.

And by having to buy the Mail

you effectively had to sell your soul if you wanted the album. Luckily I didn't.

Since when did buying the Mail On Sunday

count as "selling your soul"?

since forever.

or at least since they supported fascism in the 1930s

Fair enough

But on the other side, Radiohead will still publish the cd with a major label, and a lot of people (me first) will buy it that way. So it's fairly irritating reading around that they 'defeated the music industry'.

not exactly a slagging off

he makes a fair point in a drunken way and compliments them

you media cunts.

always making a mountain out of a molehill.

what's next? the lemonheads and machinehead slag off portishead's radiohead jibe.

bloke in the pic

has got boy boobs

c'mon lads

let's get our 'heads together and sort this out once and for all.

...geddit?

After all......

TWO 'HEADS' ARE BETTER THAN ONE.

BOOM!

Perhaps they should...

...stop being such lazy bastards and get a record out.

I live in Bristol. Where its two best known acts rarely bother to put a record out. The whole laid-back culture pervades Bristol like a virus. It needs more rock and roll, badly.

Well they've shat on my parade

I was going to MP3 only releases free of charge for my band as we were of the opinion that we didn't care about making records, we started playing to bloody play, and hope that people would have a good night out.

Radiohead have just strolled in there with there big gorky eyed size nines and beat me to the punch.

Still I am sure the same dick heads that spend 70 quid on Australian 1st run red vinyl editions of Nirvana's bleach will be quite happily coughing up the ludicrous 40 squid for some shite box set of the album when it is released, and that should easily cover the cost of the record which was made with no overheads because like any sensible fucker they have their own studio.

Honestly, it has all been done before. And done better, Shellac 1,000 Hurts, if you bought the box set vinyl you also got the CD with it.

All Foo Fighter albums are touted around labels for distro and recorded etc off Dave Grohls own back as are many many other artists...wait I forgot what I was talking about, was this about Britney's new video? man her ass looks fat!

uh

It's 'en garde' for the reference.

What a strange ramble.

Can i have ...

the phone number for The Mail on Sunday? I am a bit skint so I was thinking of letting them give my album away for a million quid. I'd be more than happy to sort Portishead's boiler gratis, and a case of beer. In fact, I'd pay Thom Yorke to fix it because i'd be set.

why doesn't the guy

from Portishead try releasing some fucking albums instead of just poncing about? Then he can probably get some central heating.

he really

does need to get his arse in gear.

...

Multiple wrong:

1) He is obviously having a pop at Radiohead, even if he claims he isn't.

2) Music is not free. Radiohead's new album however, is. That doesn't affect the business of any other band.

job.

why doesn't he go out and find one, if he is having trouble maintaining his home.

jealous because radiohead can do whatever they want?

people are clueless.

haha

yes, slightly missing the point, the plumber firstly will NEED the money, and for free?
Not really, the amount of hardcore Radiohead heads that will pay money, if they haven't already (wasn't free for me).All it means is the lack of a record label just means that when people do pay, it's just £££ for Radiohead.

I doubt it was done for the publicity it received, (although that would be obvious to Radiohead, I hope), and I don't think it was done for their profits. To me all that leaves is Radiohead having a dig at the record labels.

"music for free is it?"
that's upto you...

*sigh*
yeah, I'm guessing that was said out of jealousy, personally.
It'll be interesting to see if it's still there in a few days.
