http://www.discogs.com/label/Motown
or
http://www.discogs.com/label/Stax ??
i'd side with Memphis personally, because aside from Stax you also get Hi Records and Goldwax and all that beautiful, beautiful stuff that Willie Mitchell was involved with. I generally prefer those Southern voices too, bit growlier.
...
Imagine the withering contempt in my voice as I intone "Uh, the funk brothers, OBVIOUSLY."
Booker T. & The M.G.'s - Soul Limbo
is that the one they used to have on the bbc cricket coverage?
id probably say memphis, although i dont know what goldwax records is, i like eddie floyd.
yeah, that's the one.
Goldwax was a Memphis label that closed in 1969... they had James Carr on the label.
http://redkelly.blogspot.com/ has been upping a buncha Goldwax stuff lately, and it's a great read too.
tough one
but it has to be Stax. I went there a couple of years ago. Crap town but the Stax studios were the best..
Motown
I stopped reading as soon as I saw "jackson 5"
It has to be Motown.
My favourite Northern Soul band are The Contours, and they're on Motown.
I think Stax was maybe a bit funkier than Motown, which was pretty much mostly sledgehammer stuff.
I do like Stax, but not as much.
As a mod,
I always preferred Stax cos it was more jerky RnB than smooth soul. More of a jazz/blues influence. Early Motown shared this, but gradually became more about heart-clenching soul stompers (not as good for dancing to unless you're into Northern Soul sliding).
