Anyone? Inspired by bands that dropped of the radar thread - yesiamaduck or whoever.

I like Tom Vek, where is he?

Hopefully he fell in a hole

which does not have any musical equipment in it

pfff

hater, his music is good! Why'd you have to be like that?

I think he has a problem

with anyone that can hold a note, play a musical instrument, write a song etc etc........

What, not liking middling indie bands with no discernable talent

or vision or flair, means you don't like like music at all? pft

Oh look, my first typo

from no being able to see what i'm typing in the new site

Sorry, I didnt meant to be offensive John,

its just that there are a lot of bands out there that make an effort to write catchy songs, as opposed to strumming a guitar and singing about a hamface boy? I know that that is what you lot do, but I think it is unfair that you are getting so much attention when there are genuinely good song writers out there getting no attention. Maybe I am too old fashioned?

I am just being honest.

" there are a lot of bands out there that make an effort to write catchy songs"

TOM VEK IS NONE OF THESE.

Unless the effort he puts in isn't being realised.

It isnt being realised by you.

Have you ever tried recording and producing a track by yourself.

There is a lot to it, and at the end of the day it has to be marketable as well!

I am not his biggest fan, and I thought that his first album was flawed
but I have every bit of respect because I know how bloody hard it is to do.

Oh for fuck's sake

What he hell does how hard it is to record and produce a track have to do with anything? It's how it sounds at the end of the day that counts.

Plus I know loads of people who write and produce their own stuff entirely by themselves. Some are great, some are awful but all that matters is how good it sounds at the end of the day. The amount of hard work a band puts in is entirely irrelavent.

It's a pretty hilarious comment really.

"Have you ever tried recording and producing a track by yourself?" Yes. Many times.

"There is a lot to it, and at the end of the day it has to be marketable as well!"

No it doesn't. It doesn't have to be anything but if I'm going to like it it'll have to appeal to me, yeah? There's no objective aspect to this.

That last time I bothered to try and 'record and produce a track myself' I did the 10 tracks here: http://last.fm/music/1101010

(They're also every bit as bad as Tom Vek's stuff.)

The band I'm in now are far better than Tom Vek's stuff I'd say, and we're hardly amazing.

The thing is I've started recording by myself recently

and what with Garageband and pother modern software it's piss-easy to do. Not to say that it's easy to do anything good but it's ridiculous to give people credit to just being able to produce and play on their own records 'cos if I can do it anyone can. And I literally do mean anyone.

Pocus Whiteface

It's in my profile I think.

I'm not really trying to be a total cock here

I just get bored of the automatic reaction to Brainlove not liking anything as being about how 'elitist' he is or how he doesn't like anything with tunes or something. John clearly likes a lot of different music and I don't like all of it naturally but it's fairly boring to see him shouted down like that for his opinion rather than being argued with on a more constructive level.

I am aware that he often responds with fairly hyperbolic and unequivocal statements against what he doesn't like but that should just be taken in one's stride, surely?

No thats fair enough.

I have been a bit too harsh with Tracy is hot to be honest.

I think the thing with a band like Tracey is Hot & The Clap

is that the kind of thing they do will intially get more attention than some other bands because it's quite striking and immediate but on the other hand because of the length of their songs and the percetion they are (with no offence intended by this term) a bit of a 'novelty' may in itself place a glass ceiling and shelf life on what they do. So it all balances out in the end.

It's an entirely different thing to the bands writing catchy songs you mention and shouldn't really be seen in comparison or competition.

No I'm sure you've been fair about Tracy is Hot...

I enjoyed the live gig but apart from Ham Faced Boy I can't say I think anything I've heard recorded floated my boat at all.

I'm pretty sure I actually used the phrase "John Brainlove's musical Nadir" in an earlier thread! :D

I don't think there's anything wrong with critising someone's music; I just don't like lazy retorts playing on easy stereotypes for a different subject. Or something.

And my take on Tom Vek is that's he's rubbish

He's done some stuff that's not too bad but fundamentally that makes it all the worse. There's no sense of actual songwriting talent to what he does: it just seems like lazy 'I'm in a studio' noodling' catapulted to 'amazingly inventive solo artist' despite actually being very drab.

It's so unremarkable.

^ and ^^

I should really go and see them before I criticise.

'you'vce just been mindlessly saying he is shit

and offering no actual back up, whats the point of that?

I think he has obviously got talent, and his music is pretty cool. I enjoy it. He makes all the music himself. I bet you can't play that many instruments.

* you've

bloody keyboard

Ha.

You've said yourself that you skip tracks on the album, and the opinion is generally just a little bit more enthusiastic than a "meh". He's SO obviously totally average. And I don't care how many instruments he can play. He is very obviously destined to be a forgotten also-ran of music.

Meh still gets played at clubs

and DiS ran an article on him a week ago asking him to come back :)

Well I disagree

and I think you are a tit.

Giant splashing tears.

Tom Vek fan doesn't like me.
WAAAAAH

wrong

I can play Bass, guitar, lead, keyboard, drums to an extent. I can programme breaks, and I write my own stuff and record it, punk and dance

check my site out although it isnt a very good example because I have negelected it for a long time and the all of my tunes on there have the collected production time of around half a day. have a look though.

Ah!

You were talking about Tom Vek.

I wonder how many needless arguements have happened due to not knowing whos response was directed at who.

Humble appologies!

Fiver says if he was on Brainlove records

it woul of been the best 'Funk Electro album of the year' :D

LOL

POOONED

That would never happen.

He's too shit.

HAHAHAHAHA

what a silly reply

Not really

Wouldn't touch Tom Vek with a bargepole

BEcause you don't like him

doesn't mean he's shit

stop being a willy

Fuck Off

Tom Vek's album is ace, and he is ace live.

He doesnt play MOR indie bullshit like Razorlite, Pigeon Cunts, or any of that shit three piece dance rock bulcrap like the Gossip who are living off one song and a fat lesbian for what seems like an eternity.

Tom Veks tunes were catchy, different to the MOR at the time and didnt get enough recognition.

Saw him at Bestival a few years back and him and the band were great and really seemed to be having a great time. There was no pretence to it, no overt showmanship, just Tom in a jeans and a tshirt (not skinny jeans to look cool) playing songs and being great.

Ah fuck it, you don't like him, fine, your loss

^ this

I've seen him live.

It was fucking terrible. Absoluely yawnsome half-baked drivel.

brainlove

has always been gay for vek. However it's unrequited, hence the bitterness of the queen.

I really hope

not because he set the fire in me....

(c c)

...groan

i hope he's not dead - even if his music was a bit 'meh', he's very nice to look at.
mute button ftw!

noooooooooo!

oh wait, I'm sure he's fine.

DiS said his sister said

he is in his room making some sort of album with his production gear.... but other then that we haven't heard anything :(

I really really loved the album, especially nothing but green lights

I played it

non-stop when it came out, but the thought of listening to it now doesn't really get my juices flowing...Nothing But The Green Lights was a good song, the percussion is probably the highlight of the album

I justed cracked it out for the first time in a while

go on!!! you've got nothing to lose. Totally forgotten avbout it. I sort of had the same view as you till about 10 mins ago.

I love it toooooo

its not 100% amazing, or even really 90%, but it just sounds so COOL and with COOL NOISES, and importantly like he had some kind of interesting potential.

I'm going to

listen to it tonight when I go to bed to see if I still dig it

Good man!!!

hurrah

I'll hold

you responsible if I have nightmares though

*puts album on*

g'night people

It certainly isn't a classic album

and I don't go 'I MUST LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM WITHIN blah blah' but it gets a spin still every hour n again & I will more then happily dance like a moron to it in clubs.

It was a descent album,

nothing more. However I thought it showed alot of potential, there were little bits on it that seemed to indicate he could one day be really good.

Which makes his disappearence ever-so-slightly frustrating

Yeah some songs you skip

but others are almost impossible to skip, most obviously nothing but green lights

^

interesting

True, sadly

One pretty great song, the rest resembles that moron Calvin Harris.

He was like The Rapture compared to !!!

A slimmed down, more easily swallowable version of something truly great, who appealed to a more mainstream type of audience.

Why would you compare the rapture to !!!?

I don't think they are very similar at all

nor do i think that TV is similar to LCD

A little word in your ear

Was also pretty great. And so are the Rapture! Echoes is one of the most influential albums of the 2000s imo and they're not that much more mainstream than !!! certainly now after Pieces didn't do so well.

least not all his songs sound the same

North American Scum
Daft Punk Playing at My House

sound way too similar to me

I played it once when it came out

and can't remember what it sounds like, and therefore it can't be that good. QED.

^

Bland. Beyond. Belief.

Get. A. Life

We understand you dont like him, now move on.

I'll move on when I like.

So bugger off you egregious bad-music-loving twat.

I miss him.

no

he was in the studio we were in the other day. he had a little room and he was making music. i accidentally walked in on him and someone had to yank me out cause i started talking shit to him. i didn't know who he was.

whatever he was making sounded good.

"yank me out"

sounds rude

sorry

i mean someone had to yank tom vek off while i took a shit on him.

spellcheck is broken.

that was not him

after a serious in social infraction, a year or so back

and in the light of his non atypically ungentlemenly refusal to apologise

i had him incarcerated in the basement of the house on the corner. i check on him monthly and give him some milk and lard for the next 4 weeks.

he is quite pale now

and probably too big (certainly too weak) to climb up thru ther trap door

i also recharge his ipod alternate months. It is full of The Carpenters

I will release him when I get 1000 signatures at
www.setVekfree/whydontyou.htm

sweet

good work, on it sounding good, not yanking him off

I was in the studio

he is apparently hiring a room from the other day. I think he's just tinkering and taking his time with his new ideas.
