if you were going to make an "introduction to" CD of your favourite band

what would you put on it?

The CD must be no more than 10 tracks long. You can either put on your 10 personal favourites or the 10 tracks that you think would get someone into this band who had no prior knowledge of them.

I'll have a moment to think about this and then post mine below.

GO!

FOOL

It's an intro to weezer.

leaving many more songs for people to discover if they want to. Tired Of Sex is not all that anyway.

Ariel Pink

Yeah, I'm a cheat - so what?!

VOLUME 1

1. Good Kids Make Bad Grown Ups
2. Among Dreams
3. Politely Declined
4. Interesting results
5. Every night at Miyagis
6. Are you gonna look after my boys?
7. Loverboy
8. Alisa
9. For Kate I Wait
10. Life in L.A.

VOLUME 2
1. Immune to Emotion
2. Hardcore Pops Are Fun
3. West Coast Calamities
4. Almost Waiting
5. Credit
6. Let's Build a Campfire There
7. Beverly Kills (Freaks with Golden heirs)
8. Ariel (Friedman)
9. New Trumpets of Time
10. Gopacapulco

is his *ahem* new

one worth a go? i heard its a bit uneven

I've not heard....

..it yet. But what isn't uneven about Ariel Pink? ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N6EecRJu60

new one?

i think i might make these volumes

and have another go at listening to him. i've never really enjoyed him before.

The Flaming Lips

1. Talking Bout The Smile Deathporn Immortality Blues
2. Turn It On
3. She Don't Use Jelly
4. Slow Nerve Action
5. This Here Giraffe
6. Bad Days
7. Race For The Prize
8. A Spoonful Weighs a Ton
9. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1
10. The W.A.N.D

Hell yeah!

That's the kind of tunes I like to see! None of that Do You Realize shit!!

Haha it's funny I say that because I love that song, and album. But 'Clouds', 'Bulletin', 'Transmissions', and 'Future Head' are by far better.

I've been compiling an of Montreal one for a wee while

I set myself some rules like 2 tracks maximum per album, 1 if possible, cover all albums and EPs. Have some sensible running order. It's tough. 16 tracks at the moment to whittle down.

My last one was pre-Deflated Chime, so I'll post the new tracklist soon.

mogwai

1. punk rock
2. sine wave
3. hunted by a freak
4. superheroes of BMX
5. tracy
6. summer
7. take me somewhere nice
8. christmas steps
9. you don't know jesus
10. 2 rights make 1 wrong

that was hard. nothing from mr.beast and 4 from rock action. ah man, too much choice...

that would be so tough for...

It would be like all Coquelicot songs and then a couple Gay Parade ones.

Super Furry Animals

Volume 1: Songs I think someone SHOULD like:

1 Ice Hockey Hair
2 Dacw Hi
3 Chubacabras
4 Neo Consumer
5 Down a Different River
6 Hometown Unicorn
7 Arnofio / Glo in the Dark
8 Pam V
9 Frequency
10 Mountain People

Volume 2: Songs they probably already like but don't know it yet:

1 Something 4 the Weekend
2 Northern Lites
3 Hermann Loves Pauline
4 Do or Die
5 Golden Retriever
6 (Drawing) Rings Around the World
7 Hello Sunshine
8 If You Don't Want Me to Destroy You
9 Demons
10 The Man Don't Give a Fuck

Still can't find

Mwng! And it's too expensive online!

Red House Painters

01 - Grace Cathedral Park
02 - Japanese to English
03 - katy Song
04 - Mistress
05 - Down Through
06 - Take Me Out
07 - New Jersey
08 - Rollercoaster
09 - Strawberry Hill
10 - Mistress (piano)

This was tough to do, but flows perfectly and is ideal length/pace for a newcomer. I decided to stay away from later stuff as the production is so different that it wouldn't feel like one album. I urge people who haven't heard them to get hold of these tracks and sod em in this order!

I don't have a favourite band

but if I was to make an introduction to The Verve:

1. Gravity Grave
2. A Man Called Sun
3. Star Sail
4. Already There
5. The Sun, The Sea,
6. Butterfly
7. This Is Music
8. (Reprise)
9. Bittersweet Symphony
10. Catching The Butterfly

HISTORY?

Fo' serious?

At 10 tracks most of it's going to come from the songs pre-'A Northern Soul'. I really couldn't care less about them past that.

Let's give Pixies a go

Debaser
Levitate Me
Gouge Away
Is She Weird
River Euphrates
U-Mass
Monkey Gone To Heaven
Wave Of Mutilation
Gigantic
No.13 Baby

seriously

open or close with it.

Alright, alright

Dump River Euphrates and put it in first, even if it does then look even more like the most obvious ten selections. Nobody said this was going to be an easy task.

There's not enough Bossanova and Trompe le Monde in there

I'd go for:

The Happening
Letter to Memphis
The Sad Punk
Motorway to Roswell
Oh My Golly!
Hey
Gouge Away
Ed is Dead
Alec Eiffel
Where Is My Mind?

Trompe Le Monde ftw.

my Pixies list

where is my mind?
bone machine
head on
motorway to roswell
is she weird (peel session version)
tame
hey
nimrod's son
rock music
subbacultcha

No

Here Comes Your Man?
No. 13 Baby, the forgotten Pixies jem.

SFA ok, SFA ok

01 - Ice Hockey Hair
02 - Sidewalk Serfer Girl
03 - Hermann Loves Pauline
04 - Arnofio Glo In The Dark
05 - Some Things Come From Nothing
06 - Slow Life
07 - She's Got Spies
08 - Atomik Lust
09 - Run! Christian, Run!
10 - The Man Don't Give A Fuck (live)

o

sweet one

Tthere isn't really much point in doing an introduction to the Beatles CD, is there?

However, if my friend had been living on the moon for 45 years they'd get:

1. Hard days night
2. Happiness is a warm gun
3. Hey bulldog
4. Hello goodbye
5. Magical Mystery Tour
6. I'm so tired
7. I need you
8. Something
9. For no one
10. A day in the life

anything by the Beatles

that involves the word "Something" and not the words "Eleanor", "Strawberry" and "Penny" is an instant fail.

Well, sometimes you've gotta spread your bets

They've been living on the moon for 45 years so don't really have much to compare it with other than NASA sanctioned patriot rock.

Penny Lane

is shit.

But you are right about Strawberry Fields Forever and Eleanor Rigby.

how can you even say that

Seriously. How the shit is Penny Lane, shit.

Ok, shit was a bit harsh

But I think it's just another maudlin McCartney pop song, vapid and uninspiring compared to Strawberry Fields Forever, and not a patch on anything from Revolver/Sgt. Pepper.

Another Beatles one then

I Saw Her Standing There
Ticket to Ride
Things We Said Today
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
Rain
Love You To
Here, There and Everywhere
Strawberry Fields Forever
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
I Want You (She's So Heavy)

I'll have a go at a Beatles one...

Hello, Goodbye
Eight Days a Week
For No One
We Can Work it Out
Ticket to Ride
Across the Universe
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
Eleanor Rigby
With a Little Help From My Friends
A Day in the Life

bright eyes

sunrise sunset
oh you are the roots...
the calander hung itself
messenger birds song
poison oak
loose leaves
waste of paint
the difference in the shades
a song to pass the time
lets not shit ourselves

Mine would be a little different...

01. The Big Picture
02. Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh
03. When The President Talk To God
04. I Believe In Symmetry
05. Landlocked Blues
06. Hit The Switch
07. If The Brakeman Turns My Way
08. Something Vague
09. Don't Know When But A Day Is Gonna Come
10. Lets Not Shit Ourselves (To Love And To Be Loved)

I've not really listened to Letting Of The Happiness.

It would have to run like this;

01. When the President Talks to God
02. The Calendar Hung Itself
03. Gold Mine Gutted
04. Drunk Kid Catholic
05. Lover I Dont Have to Love
06. Padraic My Prince
07. Sunrise Sunset
08. Travelling Song
09. Nothing Gets Crossed Out
10. Easy/Lucky/Free

No debate... end of...

Damn..

Almost Perfect.. I'd Replace Padraic My Prince With "No Lies, Just Love" &
Traveling Song With "No One Would Riot For Less"

Fugazi

1) Turnover
2) Cashout
3) Bad Mouth
4) Long Division
5) Cassavetes
6) Full Disclosure
7) Furniture
8) Song no 1
9) Long Distance Runner
10) Strangelight

That was fucking hard.

Radiohead - not done yet! So I'll do one...

1) Paranoid Android
2) Banana Co
3) Black Star
4) Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong
5) A Punchup at a Weddding
6) Idioteque
7) 15 Step
8) Lucky
9) A Wolf At The Door
10) Street Spirit (Fade Out)

Although I might replace one of the HttT tracks with another, Sail to the Moon.

Christ alive, I've tried Radiohead

so many times. It's very very hard to do an introduction for someone. I've come to the conclusion that it could only be accomplished with two cd's; one more guitar based, and one experimental.

A second CD would be easy...

...that 10-tracker = a little scattered, but a pick from every pot, save the really bad early stuff (Banana Co my one nod to pre-Bends era).

An introduction?

I'd enjoy that tracklisting but maybe a bit too obscure methinks. Mine (today) would be:

1. 2+2=5
2. The National Anthem
3. Paranoid Android
4. Karma Police
5. Lucky
6. Idioteque
7. House Of Cards
8. Like Spinning Plates
9. Everything In Its Right Place
10. Street Spirit (Fade Out)

Right I can't skip past this without posting my own...

1.) Everything in its Right Place
2.) Black Star
3.) There There (The Boney King of Nowhere
4.) How To Disappear Completely
5.) Let Down
6.) Reckoner
7.) Karma Police
8.) Idioteque
9.) Knives Out
10.) Where I End and You Begin (The Sky is Falling In)

Bloody hard but I think this works.
