have remembered what akira is. motorbikes and such. yeah.
Bit more than that :P
Having read the Akira books, the film is slightly problematic for me, because it doesn't really compare - the manga goes so much further with the storyline, and its probably the most compulsive thing I've ever read. I was working nightshifts at a call centre when I was reading it, and I'd go to work, read a volume, and then order the next one online while at work... :D
Still, technically a beautiful film, and damn fun to watch as well. It's so atmospheric, full of little background details - a perfect vision of a society teetering on a knife edge between salvation and complete and utter destruction.
i've never read the manga. i assume you'd reccomend it then? :P i might search it out in forbidden plant. i find manga quite hard to read though, the whole 'backwards' thing confuses me :D
really? oooh, i might buy it then (when i get my student loan of course. getting my priorities right :P), i've never found one that had been flipped.
i have tried reading manga, but i lose track of everything because i forget and started reading the pages back to front, which is utterly confusing!
Yeah, me too :D I had some unflipped issues of the Eva manga, and although I would read the pages in the right order, I'd always forget to read right->left across the page :D
i've not got to it yet. i've got series 1 through 7 and the film lying on my floor waiting impatiently for study leave when i can lock myself in with the tv and watch the entire lot in one go.
Oooh, you must see the movie as well - it's an alternative ending, that replaces episodes 25 & 26. A lot of the fanbase hated the TV series ending [it's.. uh.. slightly unorthodox] so they went back and made a big budget movie that turned out to be even more of a head fuck :D
Anyway, you can get it in a 2-movie boxset with Death & Rebirth, which if you don't know is a kind-of arty 'recap' movie, and its about £25 which isn't too bad.
Watching them all in one day.. I did that once. I think it cause a brain meltdown :D
now you say it, i think it's death and rebirth that i have and possibly not 'the end of...' psht! one of my friends has it though, so i'll steal it when he's not looking :D
i will manage the all in one day thing at one point this week. i just managed to stay awake to watch eight hours of lord of the rings.
I was having my first week off in over a year while between jobs, and spent a day eating bagels and watching video after video after video. After ten episodes, it seemed like a prudent idea to head straight for the home stretch, especially given how involving it gets in the second half of the series.
So, yeah, go for it.
But don't blame me if you start babbling about Instrumentality and Angels and Seele.
The Wicker Man - Best psychological horror film ever. Christopher Lee rules. Also the source of much inspiration for the League of Gentleman (see poiceman in shop, the Salmon of Knowledge etc)
Brazil - Best British eccentric film made by an American ever. Terry Gilliam's excellent work here...fucking funny in parts & quite dramatic in others.
Eraserhead - Best 'what the fuck was that all about?' psychological horror film ever. Many people loathe it but I actually quite like it for it's aesthetic qualities, mutant baby & subtle background white noise.
Chopper - £3 on dvd in every HMV sale ever. A violent classic. Hilariously dark too. Enjoy.
David Lynch did Mullholland Drive....confusing yet great.
I have not seen the Original Vanishing so you may be right.
Throughout Eraserhead some of the white noise is louder than at other parts, but it certainly does add to the overall tenseness & nightmarish quality of the film. Watching that film late at night after a few bongs will taint your psyche slightly. My good lady on the otherhand thought it was the worst film she's ever seen, and I can understand that too.
shaun of the dead was dreadful. i went to see it expecting big train random (prince/jockeys) genius. instead i got a romantic drama / comedy that dragged on like a burnley match... anyways...
i have to agree on 1 and 2. not seen magnolia - but if it falls into the donnie darko/american beauty THIS REALLY IS A MEANINGFUL AND THOUGHT PROVOKING film then I'll steer well clear - thanks for the warning
Why don't you like Donnie Darko, and American Beauty for that matter, I think they are both fantastic. I'm just interested as to why you dislike them. Oh yeah and I'll back up anyone who said Spirited Away, it rules so much and has anyone said Delicatessen, I think that's how you spell it. It's about a French butcher in a post apocalyptic world. Oh and Iron Monkey, top class kung fu action.
It just seems there are certain films that are specifically designed to appeal to an audience that need to distinguish themselves from the popcorn munching masses by liking oh so arty and meaningful films, whilst still not bothering getting into anything to obscure and inaccessible (say the radiohead of film). American beauty seems especially contrived, some of the lines are so cheesy (admittedly disguised by good acting) e.g “ Our marriage is just for show. A commercial for how normal we are when we're anything but.”etc. I’d probably like it if I thought it was sincere but I can just imagine some studio exec saying ‘how can we cash in on this disaffected 90’s attitude’, it seemed like a really bad Douglas Coupland book to me. As for Donnie darko, I like the film the director talks about in the commentary but that’s not the film he made, so much just isn’t there, ambiguity isn’t meaning it’s the opposite. Might give the directors cut a shot though.
Mad Max - no matter how many times I see the boomerang slice off dude's fingers it's funny.
John Water's films, especially early 'blue' films - funniest movie scene ever is when Divine, a 400lb transvestite playing the role of a 16 yr old girl, throws her parents into the Christmas tree cos she didn't get the fuck-me pumps she wanted.
Drugstore Cowboy - Matt Dillion and friends are desperate for drugs. And why not?
Pope of Greenwich Village - Some of the best NYC banter you're ever gonna hear.
