I nominate "Only Fools and Horses."
Been watching it loads recently and its just so bloody hilarious.
Grandad is an absolute hero.

Slater: "The man what nicked the microwave, was he caucasian?"
Grandad: "No, he was a white fella!"

Who ate all the ROFL?

*says Friends*

*gets shouted down*
*couldn't care less*
*goes home and watches Friends*

I used to think Friends was a guilty pleasure

It isn't. It's actually great.

I might agree with Friends

but I might say Spaced too (although that doesn't really seem like a sit-com).

Maybe Red Dwarf, also.

the fact that friends is so watchable

after the 10,000th time says something. Arrested development wins though.

I really like Friends.

The correct answer is Curb Your Enthusiasm though.

really?

I didn't think it could be anyone's favourite. It's just sort of inoffensive blandness. A bit like background music.

Peep show and the thick of it. I like them a lot.

the bottom line about Friends is that it's funny

and makes me laugh more than pretty much anything else. Ergo, therefore, in conclusion, it is good.

^ this

I think Friends, as a sitcom, is pretty much perfect.

My one problem with Friends

is that I tended to find it jarred sometimes between the funny bits and the "serious" bits. Whereas other comedies have managed to be simultaneosuly funny and deal with serious stuff whilst being funny, Friends seemed to have to slip out of "comedy" mode to do it.

There are gooey moments which I can do without

But it's not as bad as those awful 'meaningful' bits in Scrubs.

Fair point.

Bizarrely Scrubs is one of the best comedies at managing to be funny and serious at the same time, which makes the meanginful voiceovers even more unnecessary.

Arrested Development

is AMAZING!

Red Dwarf!

Or Spaced... if that counts as a sitcom

keeping up appearences

or the young ones.

Seinfeld

.

Well

best British sit com: Black Books
Best US sit come: Friends

^these are in my mind what sitcoms mean.

Peep Show, Flight of the Conchords, Spaced, Mighty Boosh, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, Bras Eye and The Thick of It are all personal favourites but are too cult to be sitcoms in my mind.

I don't see as it odes

although Brass Eye and debatably Garth Merenghi probably don't fit the definition of sitcom anyway but that's not because of cult status but because they aren't really sitcoms.

brass eye

was more of a satirical documentary wasn't it?

Its very much a different kind of comedy.

These cult programs are overwhelmingly character driven, not situation driven, so I wouldn't call them situation comedies is all.

Come on

It's clearly Seinfeld.

(Arrested Development also deserves props).

Hmmm...

It's between Father Ted, Spaced, the Fall and Rise of Reggie Perrin and, much as I hate to be crushingly predicable, Fawlty Towers

I'm sure you aren't.

It's very rare to be the only person who's wrong about something.

I tell people I don't like it.

In reality, I've never seen it.

I've never seen it either

and this does annoy those who go on about how great it is.

Good call on Father Ted.

I just don't find Simon Pegg that funny for some reason

Even stuff like Shawn of the Dead. I do try to like him, honest. It's probably the annoying presence of Nick Frost as well.

Frasier

without a doubt

.

Best UK Sitcom - The Office
Best Overseas Sitcom - Curb

^

Father Ted

best US one is arrested devolopment

^

could be a stupid

question and feel free to shoot me down in flames but do you think you'd find it as funny if you weren't Irish. Father Ted that is.

I don't.

I'm not Irish and I think it's brilliant.

nah

i know plenty of non irish people that find it hilarious.

also it was channel4/bbc that funded it, it got rejected by the irish stations.

I'm not irish either

but I guess that I miss out on some of the references as I'm not. One of my mates who is irish pointed this out.

's like anything though

there are some things on american shows i don't get. when they reference certain people or tv shows. i'm like... er what?

I'm. Alan. Partridge.

surely?

Coupling

First Three Seasons
We ignore post Geoff Coupling, its not the same.

Bottom was also AMAZING

Coupling was one

of those programmes that you always end up watching, but isn't actually that good.

* first TWO seasons

the third was a bit meh.

also was a bit inconsistent even at its best, but some of the episodes are 100% comedy gold, like when he accidentally pretends to be an amputee

This sort of thread

is pretty tedious

Correct answers:
Arrested Development
Seinfeld
Curb
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
The Simpsons
I'm Alan Partridge

Really wrong answers:
Scrubs
Friends

End thread?

Arrested Development

Seinfeld
The Bob Newhart Show
Cheers

I haven't seen many Brit sitcoms listed. I'm Alan Partrige would've made it if the last few episodes didn't sorta suck. MP's Flying Circus comes close.

Special mention to Saturday Night Live's original Not Ready For Prime Time Players - though not really a sitcom, because I still laugh every time Dan Ackroyd says, "Jane, you ignorant slut," ...it's the funniest thing ever.

M*A*S*H

obvs

Re flying circus

yer correct.

Re: m*a*s*h. The first season or two... after that it drowns in Alan Alda's sentimental bullshit.

I vote...

Arrested Development
Trailer Park Boys
I'm Alan Partridge

I'm Alan Partridge (first series only)

obviously.

Second place probably Seinfeld

Frasier

Seinfeld

errrm

Arrested development or scrubs probably although i do enjoy the odd friends episode.

^

THIS

*obvious, yet still true answers*

Spaced
Curb
Arrested Development
Peep Show
I'm Alan Partridge
Black Books
Fawlty Towers
Seinfeld
The office

Guilty Pleasures: Coupling, Friends

i knew you were going to say that.

Is The Larry Sanders Show a sitcom?

I'd say so.

I couldn't choose just one

but my nominations would be:

Seinfeld
The Office (Original, but US is good too)
Arrested Development
The Thick of It
I'm Alan Partridge
Peep Show

Frasier

Black Books
Scrubs
Friends
Father Ted
Simpsons
Family Guy

does

look around you count?

surely not.

but still.

.

Flight Of The Conchords is the best one I've seen for a while. The US Office is the second best (miles better than the UK one as well).

Does Brasseye count?

If not: Bottom. Or The Office. Or Curb. Or Arrested Development.

But certainly not:

Friends
Red Dwarf
Black Books

PS

Big Train is also amazing.

UK: The Thick Of It/ I'm Alan Partridge

US: Scrubs

I've also just discovered Spaced is now on 4 On Demand so I'm gonna watch a bit more of that tonight, seems pretty good.

Nathan Barley

I enjoyed it, and then it just had me hiding behind the soda.

It also had me

hiding behind the SOFA. Damn the lack of an edit function.

hyperdrive

<emits hollow empty souled laugh>

eh... just mentioning that show makes me want to weep blood at the thought of my licence fee being PISSED AWAY ON SUCH SHIT, I may ask for a refund...

Erm, My Family or Curb Your Enthusiasm?

MY FAMILY?!

The Thick of It!

It is brilliant.

...

Only Fools and Horses (ignoring all the specials after they became millionaires in the 1996 Xmas one).
Fawlty Towers
Father Ted
Spaced
Blackadder (this is probably the best of the UK lot for me - the ending of Series 4 is one of the best TV moments ever)

Frasier (until Niles and Daphne got together)
Seinfeld

CURB &

Arrested Development are both awesome. Been switched on to these for a while since they were both on BBC4 when it first started. Scrubs gets honorable mention.

Friends - I might hate myself for saying it, but i do find myself switching to E4 if nothing else is on.

seinfeld

yes it is.

Fawlty Towers

how could I forget... and Get Smart was hilarious, too.
