It’s a little strange how The Whitest Boy Alive are so substantially overlooked, given the praise earned by Erlend Øye in his former guise as a King of Convenience, and even the coverage he enjoyed for his far patchier solo effort. Particularly given that this new project is probably his best yet. Perhaps it’s due to his focus on performing in central Europe as opposed to this little isle, or maybe it’s because the British press are too hungry for the next big thing, happy to discard a half-chewed bone in favour of a fresher one off the butcher’s floor.
‘Burning’ is another strong advocate to turn those tables around. Smooth and sultry, it showcases Øye’s sweet voice while the faint undercurrent of electronics embellishes the minimal, clean production exquisitely well.
Like all his singles, it only hints at the enjoyment to be gained from a listen to the full-length effort, but arguably, that’s what a one-off track is meant to do, and here it’s achieved with aplomb.
