In the confused dungeon of rock that is the DiS office, many people have been heard to utter “so Johnny wassisthing; is that the same as Jolene and the thingy things?”. Fortunately for all of us, the answer is a resounding no.
Whereas the NME chosen ones are a rapscallion indie dirge combo, Johnny Flynn and his accompanying Sussex Wit are a choice neu-folk effort, wrapping themselves in a strange mixture of English and US roots music. ‘The Box’ works though, if only because it carries itself across on a wonderfully sweet melody and traipsing drum before a trumpet sneaks in stage right to bring things to a triumphantly low-key finish.
Rather tidy, entirely enjoyable.
