Where should I move to? Acton or Kilburn?

I need a 2 double bedroom flat that's less than £1000 a month with good transport links and where I wont get killed. It seems the only options are Acton and Kilburn!!!

Well, the words kill and burn are included in Kilburn

but could that just be the work of trendy ironists?

between shepherds bush and ealing (its W3)

never been there, god knows why I'm looking at flats there :( I'm too easily led

I obviously cant read

i dont know where, i havent really started looking yet - as i dont know which area of london i want to be looking at :(

Definitely Kilburn!

Acton's too far out and really dull.

acton is incrdibly dull

and the majority of the people who populate the town have decided life's not worth living and walk around like zombies...fun.

walthamstow

is ok in parts. don't know brockley. acton is tedious and, in places, quite rough.

to be honest, for 1000pcm there should be loads of places available

brockley has nice houses and flats

is very good value

nearby new cross has a fun bar and music scene. you're near greenwich, blackheath, and, um, lewisham.

decent all night bus connections and fast into town on the train.

bit of crime, but not too bad.

walthamstow - bit far out! has a cool market and the dogs and that's it.

know nothing about acton. kilburn is alright, if limited.

where do you work / study? perhaps i can recommend a neighbourhood!

Acton

is really fucking rough in places, I'd choose Kilburn because of the over and underground services, plus has fairly good night bus links etc

true

Kilburn can also be really rough in places, and acton has silverlink AND five tube stations. five!

Qualifying.

Acton is not rough all. Having lived there for over 10 years I have never been approached or mugged in Acton. Kilburn is much scarier and for some reason a lot darker at night :S

As for the transport links Acton has the Central, District and Picadilly Lines all running through it. For the overground, Acton is on the same route that goes through Kilburn (lolz) plus it also has the Thames train overground that takes 5 minutes to get to Paddinton. Plus they're building yet another overgound on that route which will take 12 to get to liverpool street across town.

Plus the busses are good, you've also got the N207 from Tottenham Court Road and the N11 from Liverpool Street and the N266 from Hammersmith.

In what way?

Considering I've lived near enough to Acton for 15 years and had plenty of trouble whenever I go there, I think I'm qualified to say it's a shithole.

I'm not tied to working/studying anywhere

I'll be doing temp work mainly in central London. I seem to spend most my time in Soho/Oxford Circus at the moment but this could change by the time I move.

P.S

I lived in Harrow for three years until a few weeks ago. I loved it but it was too far out.

alright

and what kinda neighbourhood do you want to live in? what's your priorities?

you want a good local bar scene? music scene? somewhere more quiet?

We want lots...

Mainly somewhere safe. I wanna get the last tube home at night and be able to walk back to my flat without getting mugged or raped every time.

I'd like good tube links and for it not be so far out that I need to rob a bank to get a taxi home if I miss the last tube (I HATE night busses).

I don't tend to socialise much in the area where I live but it'd be nice if I was near a supermarket and a pub or two.

I'll tend to travel for gigs as I pretty much only go to see bands I work with/love these days rather than randomly going to a night and hoping I like something that's on. Again, a lot of socialising near Oxford Circus/soho.

My friends mainly live in Hammersmith (which I cant afford) or New Cross (not very good transport links for someone who hates busses).

I think that's it mainly. Thanks for being so lovely and helpful - I trust you a lot more than the estate agent!

Residential type area maybe?

I'd hate to live in a flat above a kebab shop in Camden or similar.

alright, got ya

i don't know west london at all, except around portobello which is obviously too pricey.

for good value safe residential areas, most of brockley is fine (and near your mates) and has fast train access to charring cross and the city. in east and north london (but within zone 2), maybe stoke newington? both of these will mean you are reliant on buses / trains, rather than tube. taxis back cost about £15 i think, but don't quote me on that.

holloway and around finsbury park (though that can be a bit rough) can be quite affordable. great transport links. cheap for cabs from town.

problem is, you hang out in central so narrowing down options is pretty hard! for a grand a month, you should be able to get a decent two bed within zone2 - but you'll have too persevere.

consider bethnal green - mostly a nice area (this really does depend on where though), some good housing, excellent shops, local bars and all that, plenty of atmosphere, fast into town, pretty green, a great place really. can be quite pricey but you should be able to find something. a few DiSers live around there - klaire for one - so maybe ask them for estate agent tips?

i live in shoreditch and am biased about bethnal green

i'd really nice a pretty 'townhouse' there, near victoria park.

wouldn't you rather have

a townhouse somewhere nicer? like belgravia?

well, yeah!

but not belgravia

primrose hill i think, or nw3 generally

victoria park village is really nice though!

i'd live in

the boltons.

i walked all the way from my house to parliament square today going through the boltons, south ken and belgravia. it seems a little strange that the one place i would love to live at any cost is only about 15 minutes walk from where i currently live.

still...

recently i've developed a real fondness of the docklands

which is quite worrying

south ken is nice and all, but it's not me. i have a hampstead soul.

hmmmm

i just think that if i was rich enough, there is no way i'd live that far out...

it's not that far out

i'd definitely like to live in marylebone too (i did live on montagu square for three months - friend's flat - and loved it). south ken is too far away from my centre of london

If your friends mainly live in Hammersmith

and New Cross then out of Kilburn and Acton is better.

Some nice pubs. Three big supermarkets less than 1 1/2 miles from the centre of town (one morrisons slap bang in the middle) and lots of smaller food shops.

On the Central line to Oxford Circus and Picadilly to Picadilly Circus.

It is probably to far out for a taxi. Around £20-£25 I'd say. But it does have a very good night bus that runs the length of Oxford Street. You said you hate night busses but the N207 isn't a scary creepy bus, more like a coach which is always packed with Australians who can annoy but can be fun.

Acton is safe. I used not to be but has become an up and coming place with lots of young families.

But its right next to Hammersmith so close to friends.

I seem to be pushing Acton LOADS but thats cos I know relatively little about Kilburn.

kilburn is a bit of a dump as far as i can tell

no nothing of acton though!

JACOB JONES! your flat is a bargain! pass on the estate agent details to CKleines!

not quite

it's a 2 bedroom flat for just under 1200 a month. there just isn't a living room.

mercifully, my room is big enough for a sofa and a telly and stuff.

I want a living room

and a kitchen big enough to cook in. My ex had a kitchen the size of a cupboard and it was hellish.

we've got quite a big kitchen

it's pretty nice.

i'm glad i don't have a living room because then other peole would have a veto over the choice of television viewing and would just generall get in the way.

i don't like having to share space with strangers.

I wont be living with strangers, luckily

I want a living room so I can have people round and them not have to brave my bedroom

I don't want to move there

because it might be considered stalking (long story)

its a big place.

Plus Shepherds bush is only a stones from acton anyway. And shepherds bush. AND notting hill and holland park. :)

..

my mate tells people he lives 'just west of Holland Park' ... it impresses those that know nothing of west london

ha

although I often have to say I live just west of Notting Hill. non London nationals often haven't heard of Shepherds Bush.

I do that all the time at Uni? :)

"Where do you live?"
"West London"
"Where abouts?"
"Oh, Notting Hill... well, just west of."
If my flatmates over hear they shout "No he doesn't he lives in some place called Acton"
I protest that I would have said it if anyone knew where it was. Brummies and the Welsh everywhere here.

would u suggest Shepherds Bush over Acton?

or not? It seems to me that SB is more expensive

shepherds bush

has a bit more going on than acton. other than that, they're comparable..

It is.

But "She Bu"! has everything going for it Acton has its just a bit more Londony. They've got a great market and soon to be the largest urban shopping centre in Europe, if you like that kinda thing. (RIGHT next to Hammersmith).

i have to share with strangers

and i never have people round except my girlfriend, so that's not a problem...

if it's

in W4 it's gonna be pretty nice. W3 is pretty mixed. Also, East Acton = weirdest place on earth?

Yeah, it does depend where you live.

Around West Acton, Acton Town, Acton Mainline or Acton Central stations are the best place to live. Or around the Askew road like Jasmine but as close to Stamford Brook as possible.

hmm

personally, i'd say askew road is in shepherds bush. does jasmine say she lives in acton, like?

You're right that isn't Acton.

And where it becomes acton is too remote and pricey.

Acton Central FTW!

I don't

it is W12 so you're right. I have a soft spot for acton though, I went to school there.

you live about 40 yards

from my boss, i think..

Links to Soho/Oxford Circus to Acton

are good. I live in Acton and where I was working off Bondstreet its just 7 stops on the central line, plus the N207 takes me home if I went out after work.

I don't know the links to Kilburn. Kilburn actually has cool stuff going on I guess, Acton is in a much nicer part of the world (near chiswick, the river, kew gardens etc). Depends what you're into.

I lived in Acton and now live just down the road

from Kilburn.

Definitely Kilburn. 150%

have a look at findaproperty.com

but the best thing is to call every agent in the area, like every day - decent flats go instantly!

here's a few for brockley: http://tinyurl.com/3bhgfr

for a grand you should be able to get a pretty flat in the conservation area, complete with communal garden.

Acton is MUCH better for transport links

I'd consider living there. I wouldn't consider moving to Kilburn. End of

I live in Kilburn

it's great for the music and a few bars. Transport links are ace too - but it sounds like Acton is pretty set on that front too.

Queens Park and West Hampstead are both walkable for greenery and restaurants respectively.

I've not had any trouble either, although it can be a bit dodgy on the smaller side streets late at night, particularly at the southern end.

To be honest though from what you say you are after, Acton sounds like a better bet.

I kind of live in Ealing

which is kind of near acton

it's dull, but at least fairly safe, but i'd rather risk my life and have a bit more fun.

i met a boy the other day

who said you can get lots of good drugs in kilburn cheap.
not that this information will help you.
more constructively, i would say Kilburn. it has good transport links, not generally that of a rough area, so you will not get killed, and as far as i am aware, it is cheaper than most areas.

i have friends who have lived in kilburn all their lives...

and they can pick up drugs easier than anyone else i know.
They're pretty rough though to be honest ha, and from what i've seen of Kilburn it's a shithole. But then it's a bit more central, theres more shops and a lot more going on.

Acton seems much nicer, though i've only seen the part near Acton town station.

I would pick Kilburn though, because at the moment i live in Roehampton, which is just awful. a 15 minute walk to go to the fucking shop. no 24 hour shop that will sell you alcohol if needs be. no busses to central except for a night bus! I imagine much of Acton is like roehampton, as they are quite close really.

:S

You're wrong by like a brazzillian miles.

Kilburn by miles

Acton's a complete dump, Kilburn is fantastic. Ok, so I live in Kilburn and I'm biased. Great transport links (12 mins to Baker st on Jubilee plus all the overground services), tons of good restaurants, the Luminaire, the Tricycle Theatre, good independent supermarkets, great pubs (North London Tavern etc), West Hampstead down the road... Kilburn's much safer than Acton too. Never had a problem living there.

edited, before i upset actonites

ok, acton's not a complete dump. i overstated the case in my enthusiasm for kilburn.

Acton's pretty safe.

It keeps getting mentioed as one of those those "Hot property up-and-commer" areas.

Kilburn sounds like a drug town!

I actually feel safer in Kilburn

and yes, that is saying something.

I lived in Acton for 12 months. I would never live there again.

statistically

you're safer in Acton.

YEAH!!!

Thats right. And getting safer apparently. Killburn is dark. Acton is all orange at night.

is there actually anything to do in Acton though?

As far as I can tell all of West London is a bit boring, which is where the good transport comes in handy in Acton I suppose.

But I'm already planning to move somewhere a bit more exciting as soon as I can after just a few months here.

Do many people actually do stuff in the area they live?

I never, ever do. Never have. The nearest I get to do something near home is having a drink on a sunday afternoon in a localish pub - and a roast if they do them.

Be nice to have a park to walk in though.

i really like living where i play

a park would be nice though
