Just wondering what percentage of you lot smoke, and how many you smoke a day.
I'm an ex smoker myself. I used to smoke 30 - 40 a day from the are of 16 to 32. Packed in nearly 3 years back now. Best thing i ever ever did. I hate it at gigs now when people smoke in my face etc!

Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
I now occasionally dream of cigarettes. But I occasionally dream about Disraeli, so I'm not going to read too much into that.
Cigars don't count right? RIGHT?
I still hate sanctimonious non-smokers who say things to smokers like 'oh, it's awful isn't it?! Don't you realise it's bad for you?' Generally spoken by obese people, I find. I used to want to reply 'Yeah, well you should stop eating so much you fat pig. Don't you realise it's bad for you?'
I want a cigarette.
Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
At a guess i suppose on average i probably smoke less than 20 a week, although being as i smoke roll ups (cheaper, means i smoke less in total as when im pissed i cant be bothered/arent able to roll) its hard to get an exact figure.

Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
for the last three years i've been on between 0 and 20 a day, the number goes up really high when i'm in the pub or in a club.
i think this time i'll be stopping for good. although i do fancy a fag whenever i go out and have a drink.
Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
CONS: Smells bad, costs a fortune, fucks up your lungs and gives you cancer.
PROS: Um...
Do you all remember that chemical that was found in Worcestor sauce and about 5000 other products that was thought MIGHT have some cancer-causing agents in? All those products were withdrawn from the shelf, yet NOT ONE person has contracted cancer from it.
So what about cigarettes, which cause one of the slowest, most painful, agonising deaths from cancer - that being the rotting away of your lung and the ability to breath - which hundreds of thousands of people die each year from in this country alone?
Ah... er... yeah... lets forget about that one shall we?
Fuck it.. i don't care how 'preachy' and condescending this sounds. If you really care that much, then make a case against me.
Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
Plus, if you're a government that tries to ban smoking, your alienating a massive amount of the electorate too.

Plus I look fucking cool ;)

I try to keep away from smokers as much as possible being pregnant, but its impossible when going to gigs. It does get really smoky and I hate the fact our unborn child will be inhaling it but I guess the only way I can avoid it is to avoid the gigs!

Admitedly you have to get addicted first....

well i guess thats my point...people must know that when you first smoke a cigarette, it'll taste like shit and do fuck all, so why do it in the first place...
and im not arguing back (honest)
Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
For some people the intial headrushes associated with begining smoking are enjoyable and hence addiction follows.
Again admittedly this isnt true for many people who start smoking more out of peer presure than anything else...

i try and blow my smoke away from my non-smoker friends and always apologise if i don't but it is hard when you've had a few too many ciders (i never grew out of that). i do feel sorry for them as they are a minority amongst my friendship gaggle but part of me doesn't care. smoking = something to do with your hands and an early death, what better thing to spend your money on

Yep - at around 16-19 yrs old I smoked fairly regularly. Basically, the first year or so at uni when I gave up I really craved a fag when I went out drinking. It's taken a few years but now the craving has completely stopped, thank God!
Trust me - give it a few years and you won't feel the need for one at all.
Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
To be honest, once they ban it in pubs and clubs i'll be forced to give it up completely. I dont even want a fag unless im drinking (excluding really stressful circumstances).

Also I had been planning to give up anyway as I was approaching the 10 year mark, and apparently that's where the irreparable damage begins.
Now, I hate it. Unless I am very drunk, in which case I might ask for a drag on yours, but not a whole one, no thanks, just a drag. Of your faaaaag
Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
I have had to stop going to gigs in certain venues (Metro, Windmill, that place on guitar alley I forget the name of) because every time I go to them I have to have about 6 puffs of ventolin to stop coughing enough to stand up, which tend to make me enjoy the bands rather less.
I hate coming home from gigs and stinking of other people's smoke. I hate having to breathe in everyone elses tar and I hate sounding like an old man coughing up phlegm the morning after I've been to a gig.
We had a lecture the other day about smoking cessation. There is plenty of proof that smokers are more stressed every day because of the constant need to take in more nicotine. When you give up your stress level goes up for a few weeks but falls below the baseline because the physical cravings go away, although you may be saddled with psychological cravings for years.
Smoking kills half of the people that do it and 1,000 people a year in the UK that don't. Smoking causes kids to develop asthma and it's basically a tax on the poor of this country as about 3x more poor people smoke than rich people, and the government makes about 7 times more from tax on cigarrettes than it spends on treating the effects of it.
Tobacco companies agressively promote cigarettes to third world countries, with glamourous names like ambassador, without the health warnings they have to put on packets here.
Yeah, smoking is really reeeeaaallly cool.
Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
Namely what you said about smoking cessation is essentially the same for caffine. Are you saying that we shouldnt drink coffee?
Smoking isnt the only thing by a long way to cause asthma.
Finally i dont think anyone on here has said that smoking is 'cool' except in a joking manner.
Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
No smoking isn't the only thing that causes asthma but it's a pretty big trigger and it isn't exactly fair on kids to let their parents get so hooked on something that will cause their children harm that they keep doing it around them. Not fair on the parents either.
I forgot to look - do you smoke? Also not wishing to be personal but you do seem to be a bit defensive. My mum spent all my life telling me she smoked because she enjoyed it and she could give up any day she chose (despite the fact she lit up the minute she got out of bed which I recently learned is a sign of the very serious addict). Then she died.
I just hate smoking because it makes me ill, it makes me smell, it's aggressively marked to people despite being incredibly likely to kill them, and it's killed most of my relatives. Is that allowed?
Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
And i've got nothing against people hating smokers, just wasnt sure about some of your points thats all.
In terms of the caffine thing im sure you're far better read on it than i am (although three articles doesnt tend to count as academic proof as far as im aware). I was just under the belief that the whole 'waking up' effect of caffine was down to the fact that the first cup of the day was feeding the cravings that come from withdrawl over night. Out of interest what are you studying?
I am asthmatic myself, despite the fact that none of my immeadiate family smoke. So i tend to get a bit defensive when people blame asthma purely on smoking, despite that fact that there are a whole load of causes (and triggers) that tend to recieve less press attention than smoking (eg. traffic polution, industrial emissions).
Finally i am genuinely sorry to hear that you have lost many family members to smoking.
Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
I'm studing medicine since you ask. Our lecturer the other day told us about caffeine actually being good for your brain and recommended (!) we had some before an exam. I forget exactly where else I read about it, I think a psychology book, a web tutorial we had when we were studying neurology recently, and the other was a lecture, none of which annoyingly I can give a weblink to because of their format. Sorry to be so useless.
I'm sure my asthma is hardly helped by living in dirty London, when I lived in Cambridge it went away after 18 months (see, there is something good about living there after all) and came back when I moved here! It also gets fired up by walking alongside busy roads at rush hour. As people could well argue I inflict it on myself for daring to want to go out of my house and do fun things I don't necessarily think everybody should be made to stop smoking at gigs or in pubs, but I think it should be a legal requirement to have a decent air filter. There are other venues that don't cause me problems, especially the Buffalo Bar, where you can leave a room full of smokers barely smelling of it. Even UATG is OK, I think it's just rooms with low ceilings that don't have any air con that are particularly bad.

Of course your clothes will just stink of other people's fags instead, but you still get to keep the money (and the not dying).
Medical school geek out.
