Smokers / Non-smokers

Just wondering what percentage of you lot smoke, and how many you smoke a day.

I'm an ex smoker myself. I used to smoke 30 - 40 a day from the are of 16 to 32. Packed in nearly 3 years back now. Best thing i ever ever did. I hate it at gigs now when people smoke in my face etc!

  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I quit four months ago. I'd been smoking for almost 10 years prior to that. I went through stages of smoking 30 a day, and stages of smoking about 3 a week.

I now occasionally dream of cigarettes. But I occasionally dream about Disraeli, so I'm not going to read too much into that.

    Cigars don't count right? RIGHT?

I still hate sanctimonious non-smokers who say things to smokers like 'oh, it's awful isn't it?! Don't you realise it's bad for you?' Generally spoken by obese people, I find. I used to want to reply 'Yeah, well you should stop eating so much you fat pig. Don't you realise it's bad for you?'

    I want a cigarette.
    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I am the typically iritating 'social smoker'. In that i only tend to smke when im drinking or really stressed/bored. As such it varies greatly how much i smoke in a week depending on whether or not i go out and whether or not i go to a club.

At a guess i suppose on average i probably smoke less than 20 a week, although being as i smoke roll ups (cheaper, means i smoke less in total as when im pissed i cant be bothered/arent able to roll) its hard to get an exact figure.
      • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I'm exactly the same. When I worked for a living, I used to smoke 15-20 roll-ups a day as my job was so boring & it's a great way to get away from your desk 10 times a day. Now I'm at Uni, I quit smoking fulltime as it's expensive & I had to give up sometime. However I do still smoke socially, particularly in the pub. Depends if anyone there has any cigs & they're willing to give me some!!!
        • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Oh yeah, had forgotten the other benefit of smoking roll ups, half the time when i go to roll up i'll be given a fag by a mate. Yet more cost cutting goodness!
  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Not a day goes by where i don't feel the urge to have a fag at least once!

    But i NEVER will!
    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I smoke. Probably about ten-fifteen a day, a lot more when I'm in the pub having a beer. I enjoy it, and I have no particular desire to stop. In fact, I'm going to have a fag right now. Mmmm.
      • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I've just stopped due to a bout of bronchitis. I smoked for about 2 years when i was young, gave up, then when i went to uni i started again in third year. during that time i didn't smoke, drink or do anything for the best part of 2 years, which helped.
for the last three years i've been on between 0 and 20 a day, the number goes up really high when i'm in the pub or in a club.
i think this time i'll be stopping for good. although i do fancy a fag whenever i go out and have a drink.
        • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I hate smoking. It's fucking horrible.

CONS: Smells bad, costs a fortune, fucks up your lungs and gives you cancer.

          PROS: Um...

Do you all remember that chemical that was found in Worcestor sauce and about 5000 other products that was thought MIGHT have some cancer-causing agents in? All those products were withdrawn from the shelf, yet NOT ONE person has contracted cancer from it.

So what about cigarettes, which cause one of the slowest, most painful, agonising deaths from cancer - that being the rotting away of your lung and the ability to breath - which hundreds of thousands of people die each year from in this country alone?
Ah... er... yeah... lets forget about that one shall we?

Fuck it.. i don't care how 'preachy' and condescending this sounds. If you really care that much, then make a case against me.
          • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Smoking is far too ingrained in society in order to ban it completely. Prohibition of Alcohol didn't work in America so banning smoking won't work here. Plus, you'd be criminalising vast sections of the population who would inevtiably be buying fags on the black market to feed their addiction. Also the government make ridiculous cash from the tax on fags that far far outweighs the money spent in the NHS to treat smoking related diseases. I in principle totally agree with your argument for banning it, and I wouldn't really have a problem with it. However the practicalities and money making opportunities unfortunately mean it would never happen.
Plus, if you're a government that tries to ban smoking, your alienating a massive amount of the electorate too.
            • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

As a smoker, if a Government tried to introduce a ban on smoking then I don't think it would entirely alienate me as a voter. Smoking is just...well, something I do. I'm not 'you anti-smokers are all fascist bastards' or anything, I'm just a guy who likes to have a fag. Apologies to those of you who I have offended in the past, but I do attempt to be considerate when I smoke.

Plus I look fucking cool ;)
              • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

looking at your profile pic, i fail to see how you could look even remotely cool without a fag in your hand! Nevermind with one!

                • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

You don't get the full Bamos effect through photography. You need to see me in real life to really appreciate just how undeniably motherfucking cool I am.
                  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Well thankfully, you are resident at the other motherfucking end of the country to me! So I will never have to experience the 'Bamos Effect' as you call it!
              • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Bamos - you may well not be alienated as a smoker if smoking was banned, but I would think many many other smokers would be. The world doesn't revolve around you you know!!!
                • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

                  Liar! ;)
          • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I am a non-smoker always have and always will be. But i like to think i am very tolerant of you smokers....that is until i walk behind a lot of you and ash gets into my eyes and makes me blind.
            • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I smoke about 10 a day, more if I'm drinking, bored etc. You get more breaks at work and it makes you look really glamorous.

              • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

                It's BIG AND clever.
    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Thats because I would killer you!
      • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Tried smoking once when I was 16 (peer pressure!) gave up after 2 days cos I was starving, I was using my dinner money to buy fags with!

I try to keep away from smokers as much as possible being pregnant, but its impossible when going to gigs. It does get really smoky and I hate the fact our unborn child will be inhaling it but I guess the only way I can avoid it is to avoid the gigs!
        • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I only smoke cigys at gigs or when v.drunk! Weed smoke is medicine and i take my prescription regularly.
          • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Sometimes its good to smoke just for something to do, if you're waiting for someone or something you've got something to do with your hands, so you don't look like a twat.
I used the word 'some' five times in that sentence..
            • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Let me just get this straight... People with empty hands are considered TWATS in your opinion?

              • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Easy, I just meant if I'm sitting waiting by myself in a pub I feel like a twat, but if you're smoking its not that bad
                • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

                  Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahah!
                  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

do a crossword? then you'll look even cooler esp. with a fag!
  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Yeah it's really silly that though. I've cut down my cigs considerably and sometimes it annoys me when others smoke. But you never thought about other people so much when you smoked yourself. Right?
    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

i don't smoke and i don't mind people smoking. people who smoke are mostly considerate and don't try and give you cancer.
can't say the same for some cunts who blow the smoke right in your face though. thats just plain rude.
      • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Can't say I smoke cigarettes as, to be honest, I don't like the taste.

But I am partial to abit of the green when available.
        • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I don't smoke, i never have and hopefully never will.
    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Like it was only when you smoked that you didn't care for other people's feelings, Raz!
  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

i dont smoke, because i'm cool.

it does fuck all, so whats the point?

at least drugs get you high and alcohol gets you pissed...
    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

      Au contraire.

Every 100th cigarette or so is just perfect.

*stop thinking about cigarettes, stop thinking about cigarettes...*
    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

      Smoking can get you laid....
      • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

so can having a big cock...

        err

        and alcohol
      • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

        "Smoking can get you laid...."

        ...in a coffin, yeah!
        • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

          If thats what you're into...
          • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

            giggles
          • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Isnt smoking a completely false industry? What purpose does smoking serve?
            • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Cant be bothered to argue this right now, but I presume you drink alcohol? The arguements against smoking can equally be applied to booze...
              • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

no but as i said...drinking gets you drunk, which can be rather fun at times.

                smoking does. fuck. all.
                • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Im not getting drawn into this (honest), but smoking does do something for a smoker, by feeding/abating the addiction smoking brings a feeling of relaxation to the smoker.

Admitedly you have to get addicted first....
                  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

"Admitedly you have to get addicted first...."

well i guess thats my point...people must know that when you first smoke a cigarette, it'll taste like shit and do fuck all, so why do it in the first place...

and im not arguing back (honest)
                    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Have you ever smoked a cigarette?

For some people the intial headrushes associated with begining smoking are enjoyable and hence addiction follows.

Again admittedly this isnt true for many people who start smoking more out of peer presure than anything else...
                      • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

yeah i have, there was no peer pressure or anything, i just asked one of my friends if i could have one. it was shit...i didnt enjoy it and i have never smoked one since.
              • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

                you don't get passive alcohol...
                • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

If you drink in moderation it can be good for you. There are no health benefits in smoking whatsoever...
                  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Non smokers suffer cos of passive smoking...

                    ...look at Roy Castle!
                    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

pah, roy castle brought it on himself... bloody jazz

i try and blow my smoke away from my non-smoker friends and always apologise if i don't but it is hard when you've had a few too many ciders (i never grew out of that). i do feel sorry for them as they are a minority amongst my friendship gaggle but part of me doesn't care. smoking = something to do with your hands and an early death, what better thing to spend your money on
                    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

there's a single by Roy Castle that I've seen sell for a thousand pounds........dr terrors house of horror.....anyone got a copy?
                  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Depends, one of the reasons i smoke is as a strategy to slow down my drinking. Yes it's not ideal and no im not proud that i have to do that, but it sort of could be seen as reciprocally benefiting my health.
                    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

When it comes down to it smoking is a killer regardless!
                      • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

True, but equally the drinking in moderation argument is flawed as its also has negatives right from the start, the debate over whether it weighs up as beneficial overall certainly isnt over yet and depends greatly on what evidence you look at.

                        • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

You are right there. I choose not to drink because of the possible harmful effects, same as why I chose not to smoke.
                          • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Can I add to my rather irate message near the top of this thread by saying that I used to smoke.

Yep - at around 16-19 yrs old I smoked fairly regularly. Basically, the first year or so at uni when I gave up I really craved a fag when I went out drinking. It's taken a few years but now the craving has completely stopped, thank God!

Trust me - give it a few years and you won't feel the need for one at all.
                            • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I know i can give up, i had by this new year (took a year longer than planned but hey) then i broke up with my ex and i used it as a crutch, was smoking every day. No im back down to 'social smoking'.

To be honest, once they ban it in pubs and clubs i'll be forced to give it up completely. I dont even want a fag unless im drinking (excluding really stressful circumstances).
  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

    i don't.
    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I don't and Thatcher- yes social smokers are irritating but only when they're your friends crashing fags
      • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

All i will say is that at least i admit it...
        • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

          I dont smoke cigarettes.
  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

fags and weed when I was a student, just the occasional joint now.
    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

      only smoke when been drinking.
      quite like smokers really.
      • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

i dont smoke and have never felt the urge to try it. don't mind people smoking though, apart from at gigs, where drunk men wave their smouldering fags right in front of your face and there's no room to escape.
i kind of like the smell of smoke though, reminds me of cosy little pubs.
        • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I'm one of the only people that I know that doesnt smoke..I've tried it and really don't see the appeal of inhaling smoke (when it's in the form of a cigarette). I think most people start to try and look 'cool' and then just get hooked. I don't really mind people smoking around me (if I did I would be a social isolate), apart from worrying about my friends' health. Some people seem to smoke about 10-20 a day, which can never be good
  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

About a pack. My last remaining vice! And as soon as climbing stairs becomes an important facet of my life I will consider quitting. But *cough, cough* till then *wheeze* thank god for elevators!

BTW, it's ex-smokers like you...mr marcofella, who really jump on that anti-smoking bandwagon, eh? Self-righteous, seaweed eating, I jog 34 miles a day, bastard!!
    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

      *smug*
    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

erm... Jules was logged in... thougt i was a woman for a second then (just got back from work). Anyway...

      *Smug too*
  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Hate smokers.. especially the ones that insist on blowing smoke all over yuor face.. the worst smokers are social smokers, i mean who gives a crap if one is smoking far away from you? But NO these people insist on smoking only when they are around you + others

*starts calming meditation, think happy thoughts*
  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I don't smoke ANYTHING. Never have...probably never will, but you're not supposed to say "never." I hate the way smoke smells! My dad was a smoker for thirty plus years. Though he hasn't lit up in almost twenty, he hacks up crap from his damaged lungs every morning and evening. My mom was an addict of tobacco, marijuana, etc, and she left the family years ago because of it. Cigarettes are expensive these days, too, so I don't think I'll be picking up the habit any time soon!
  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I gave up after Xmas when the doctor said I had to. I have asthma and blood disorder y'see. And apparently it's not good to smoke. Come on now, who knew?
Also I had been planning to give up anyway as I was approaching the 10 year mark, and apparently that's where the irreparable damage begins.
Now, I hate it. Unless I am very drunk, in which case I might ask for a drag on yours, but not a whole one, no thanks, just a drag. Of your faaaaag
    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

My mum died of cancer aged 48. My aunty died of cancer aged 47. My grandad was so breathless he couldn't walk for 10 years then died of emphysema. My grandma died of cancer. My other grandma can't breathe well enough to walk from one end of a room to another whenever she gets a cold but refuses to stop smoking. I'm glad my dad and other grandad don't smoke so I have some relatives left.

I have had to stop going to gigs in certain venues (Metro, Windmill, that place on guitar alley I forget the name of) because every time I go to them I have to have about 6 puffs of ventolin to stop coughing enough to stand up, which tend to make me enjoy the bands rather less.

I hate coming home from gigs and stinking of other people's smoke. I hate having to breathe in everyone elses tar and I hate sounding like an old man coughing up phlegm the morning after I've been to a gig.

We had a lecture the other day about smoking cessation. There is plenty of proof that smokers are more stressed every day because of the constant need to take in more nicotine. When you give up your stress level goes up for a few weeks but falls below the baseline because the physical cravings go away, although you may be saddled with psychological cravings for years.

Smoking kills half of the people that do it and 1,000 people a year in the UK that don't. Smoking causes kids to develop asthma and it's basically a tax on the poor of this country as about 3x more poor people smoke than rich people, and the government makes about 7 times more from tax on cigarrettes than it spends on treating the effects of it.

Tobacco companies agressively promote cigarettes to third world countries, with glamourous names like ambassador, without the health warnings they have to put on packets here.

Yeah, smoking is really reeeeaaallly cool.
      • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Firstly, this isnt a personal attack but i want to question some of the points you made...

Namely what you said about smoking cessation is essentially the same for caffine. Are you saying that we shouldnt drink coffee?

Smoking isnt the only thing by a long way to cause asthma.

Finally i dont think anyone on here has said that smoking is 'cool' except in a joking manner.
        • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Actually caffeine is a proven cognitive enhancer with very few withdrawal symptoms (I read that in at least 3 different things now). So it actually has good points and very few bad ones. I am one of the few people that annoyingly gets caffeine withdrawal if I drink too much so I'm only allowed 1 cup a day, but most people don't get them. Different to cigarettes then.

No smoking isn't the only thing that causes asthma but it's a pretty big trigger and it isn't exactly fair on kids to let their parents get so hooked on something that will cause their children harm that they keep doing it around them. Not fair on the parents either.

I forgot to look - do you smoke? Also not wishing to be personal but you do seem to be a bit defensive. My mum spent all my life telling me she smoked because she enjoyed it and she could give up any day she chose (despite the fact she lit up the minute she got out of bed which I recently learned is a sign of the very serious addict). Then she died.

I just hate smoking because it makes me ill, it makes me smell, it's aggressively marked to people despite being incredibly likely to kill them, and it's killed most of my relatives. Is that allowed?
          • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Ah yes you do but only a bit.
          • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I read in at least three places that Kasabian are good.
          • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

Firstly yep i do smoke, only socially though...And i agree its a digusting habit with many many negatives and very few benefits (if any at all).

And i've got nothing against people hating smokers, just wasnt sure about some of your points thats all.

In terms of the caffine thing im sure you're far better read on it than i am (although three articles doesnt tend to count as academic proof as far as im aware). I was just under the belief that the whole 'waking up' effect of caffine was down to the fact that the first cup of the day was feeding the cravings that come from withdrawl over night. Out of interest what are you studying?

I am asthmatic myself, despite the fact that none of my immeadiate family smoke. So i tend to get a bit defensive when people blame asthma purely on smoking, despite that fact that there are a whole load of causes (and triggers) that tend to recieve less press attention than smoking (eg. traffic polution, industrial emissions).

Finally i am genuinely sorry to hear that you have lost many family members to smoking.
            • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I don't hate smokers, most of my best friends smoke or used to smoke. I just hate the effect smoking has. Just wanted to make the distinction! Sure I'd like them to give up, for entirely selfish reasons (I really don't want to lose anyone else, not to mention the smell!) but it's not my decision.

I'm studing medicine since you ask. Our lecturer the other day told us about caffeine actually being good for your brain and recommended (!) we had some before an exam. I forget exactly where else I read about it, I think a psychology book, a web tutorial we had when we were studying neurology recently, and the other was a lecture, none of which annoyingly I can give a weblink to because of their format. Sorry to be so useless.

I'm sure my asthma is hardly helped by living in dirty London, when I lived in Cambridge it went away after 18 months (see, there is something good about living there after all) and came back when I moved here! It also gets fired up by walking alongside busy roads at rush hour. As people could well argue I inflict it on myself for daring to want to go out of my house and do fun things I don't necessarily think everybody should be made to stop smoking at gigs or in pubs, but I think it should be a legal requirement to have a decent air filter. There are other venues that don't cause me problems, especially the Buffalo Bar, where you can leave a room full of smokers barely smelling of it. Even UATG is OK, I think it's just rooms with low ceilings that don't have any air con that are particularly bad.

I smoke about 30 a day and have done for the last 4 years. Some people may find this dodging the subject, but even with all of that smoking, I still get taken aback with the smog walking around London-car fumes will make me cough my guts up more than any cigarette will.

            Smoking is cool.

i spit on all those who dont smoke.

i'm tired of smoking. I try to cut down all the time. My clothes smelling of fags is the biggest downfall followed by the money that goes up in smoke.

Have you been to the doctor? You can get nicotine replacement (patches, lozenges, sprays) or Zyban (which is an anti-depressant that inexplicably reduces cravings, for some reason nobody has managed to work out) on prescription, which is a lot cheaper than buying them, plus they can send you to a stop smoking group which can give you other kinds of support. In my lecture the other day the guy said that cutting down doesn't work because you unconsciously inhale more often and deeper to regulate your nicotine level to what it used to be, then you get to the point where you can't get enough out of each cigarette and you can't cut down any further.

Of course your clothes will just stink of other people's fags instead, but you still get to keep the money (and the not dying).

                Medical school geek out.

p.s. thedaythathatcherdies thanks for your sympathy, i forgot to say earlier.

  • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I gave up smoking for a year and a half, in that time I put on a lot of weight. I found it difficult in a social setting and started smoking again when I was out, now I am back up to 20 a day and I hate myself for it.
I have lost the weight though!?!
    • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I've gained a stone in weight since i gave up... it is hard, but i'd rather be slightly over-weight than still be a smoker!
      • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers

I know I know, but I grew out of my wedding dress and felt so bad which I know is wrong. There is no reasoning for me to start again I just did. I am not proud!
        • Re: Smokers / Non-smokers
