I was gonna say

Stagger Lee as soon as I saw the thread title. Not a huge fan usually, but Babies - Pulp is a good 'un.

also I-Spy by Pulp

"your Ladbrooke Grove looks turn me on" <3

About a million Pulp songs

Wickerman being the epic. Inside Susan is great as well.

Nick Cave - O'Malley's Bar

That Craig David one.

Erm...that's it.

Loads of Nick Cave narratives are amazing

John Finns Wife
The Ballad of Robert Moore and Betty Coltrane
The Carny
Papa won't leave you Henry

just to name a few

I can't keep a straight face during The Carny

"And it was the dwarves that were given the task of digging the ditch.."

Has the exact same reaction on me

I find it hilarious

"Moses says to Noah "shoulda dugga deepa one"
Their grizzled faces like dying moons
Still dirty from the digging done"

O'Malley's Bar is hilarious too!

"You know those big lipped fish, that clean the ocean floor..."

Papa won't leave you Henry has my favourite rhyming couplet of all time

"I was so drunk and full of rage that I could hardly speak,
A fag in a whalebone corset draping his d1ck aross my cheek"

the greatest one has to be

'ode to billie joe' by bobbi gentry.
they even made a film out of it.

Slint- Breadcrumb Trail

How is this even a discussion?

because

Stagger Lee, Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror, The Ballad of Robert Moore and Betty Coltrane, Lily, Rosemary & the Jack of Hearts and lots of other songs are erally really really really good too. truth

Oh agreed

(except don't know third one, but I'll trust you). But musically 'Breadcrumb Trail' is simply one of the most incredible things ever and it combines it brilliantly with the narrative lyrics. 'Stagger Lee' is alright musically, truth, but take like 'Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror'... its excellent lyrically but as a song as a whole to my mind, it falls slightly flat (and I know you will feel violated on a personal level by my saying that Tristan, I'm sorry).

Whoops

to clarify 'falls flat' is not actually the best term here- what I mean is you can't listen to it casually, you have to actually listen to it like watching with the video and to get the full point of the song.

But now we're more getting into a discussion

about what is the purpose of music?

But either way I like 'Breadcrumb Trail' better.

Camouflage - Stan Ridgeway

"i was a PFC on a search patrol, huntin' Charlie down..."

Anyone who thinks it's crap is just trying to look cool. And possibly has no soul.

oh and MC Lars - Mr. Raven.

Edgar Allen Poe reinterpreted by an Ivy League graduate rapping with a laptop and a Brand New sample. It really shouldn't work. but it does.
