QOTSA in 2007 are an odd thing. Live, they’re as powerful and darkly enticing as they ever were, but on record, things haven’t reached the peaks of Rated R and Songs For The Deaf. It maybe a little obvious and wearing now to mention the name of Nick Oliveri again, but his absence can not be dismissed as a reason for the band’s current musical ennui.
‘Make It Wit Chu’ was one of the more diverting tracks from Era Vulgaris. Sounding like a lounge lizard with a chainsaw in the trunk, Josh Homme croons dangerously, as he composes a track that feels it would fit in with the latest Tarantino movie, Death Proof rather well. It doesn’t however, make us want to go see the latest incarnation of the Queens on their current UK tour so much as want to remember the shows we already have seen.
shitter
than the desert sessions version though. no?
Oh yes
Big Headz
I can't think of a GREAT band where there is only one dominant ego. Whatever the reasons for their split, it was Oliveri's punkish sense of fun combined with Josh's more classic sense of songwriting that made those two records, and without the former the band is a little disembowelled. The songs may be great, but it all takes itself a bit too seriously.
Hear! Hear!
chrisnettleton has it bang on.
"great songs, takes itself a bit too seriously"
rather than them being shit songs and not very serious? I always thought Nick's songs were the weakest link. just screaming over a short punky dirge. The 'crazy naked man' thing somehow made people think it was godlike. I've always preferred Josh's more thoughtful, trippy songs. Alot of people mention that they think Queens went downhill after Nick got kicked out but I like the fact that it seems to have allowed Josh some space to actually craft some really good music. I like all the albums anyway though! Plus I've always seen them as anything but 'serious', theyre like the last shining bastion of really good 'goodtime' rock.
I miss Oliveri
He provided the full-throttle balls-out muscle that I've missed in the last two albums. So he liked meth and getting nude, he still rocked very fucken hard and that's what its about.
am i alone..
...in thinking "make it wi'tchu" sounds like it could be chris rea? or am i alone in knowing who chris rea is?
This song is one of their best in ages
It has a woozy soulfulness to it that seemed to elude their last album (Lullabies). Although I agree about the live show being weaker without Nick Oliveri.
it was on...
Desert Feckin Sessions 9&10! The absence of Oliveri has somewhat turned QOTSA, as my friend now refers to them into 'The Josh Homme Show'. I still haven't seen them live yet and debate whether they'll be as good post-Oliveri. Any thoughts to the latter? Obvz there will be no more mic eating/general insanity, but I though he was a great bass player.
