This was a thoroughly interesting programme I thought, though I wasn't totally sold on the physics explanation stuff. But then maybe wave particle duality is totally not even mentioned these days? But that's the point of the double slit experiment with single photons as I was taught at Uni. Still, I guess the notion of a photon interfering with itself does sound a bit rude.
Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I had no idea that E was 45. That's fucking amazing as he looks about 20. Lots of good bits of eels songs in the background, though it would have been nice to have more of that maybe.
And props to the living version of the blackboard cat. In fact all the animations and drawing stuff was great.
oh god i totally forgot about this :(
i really wanted to see it. hopefully it'll get youtubed...
Looks like it's repeated tonight at 2.40am
Then again on Monday at midnight.
i really wanted to see this
stupid lack of digital TV.
and yes, E has aged remarkably well, hasn't he? i suppose it's a small mercy for how much bad stuff has happened to him ;)
It's not available to stream from the BBC site that I can see.
He seems to take the depressing nature of his life in his stride quite impressively.
He does look like a serial killer, though.
* a super cool serial killer.
I'm trying to remember whree I first read about his dad.
Did Feynman mention in in one of his books? The story I remember is that Everett was challenged to play Russian Roulette for $1m (5 times he'll survive and be very rich, one time he'll die) and said something like "I couldn't bare the thought of my wife being so upset in even a sixth of the universes"
^
that's a beautiful story!
Maybe.
However, he lived for 25 years after his theory, in 5/6 he surives and in 1/6 he dies after the game. So overall he'd have lost 1/6 of his life (4.17 years).
That means he effectively turned down $240,000 a year for potential loss of life.
LOSER.
And yes, that is as much bollocks maths as it sounds.
I liked it
There's a nice interview with E in this week's New Scientist
as well as a slightly far flung article about parallel universes exisiting in 'The Void'
The interview's quite sweet really.
It was
pretty neat wasn't it.
I was a bit disappointed that they didn't spend a bit more time on the physics and theories though, rather than all the shots of him walking around the uni pulling faces.
this sounds like the best
thing ever. and i also missed it due to seeing the most excellent dirty projectors in brighton. anyone know if/when it'll be repeated? my uknova account got cancelled :-(
It was great
It was a good mixture of learning a little bit about quantum physics and possible worlds and about a guy learning about his dad.
The bit where he listened to the tapes at the end was brilliant.
I read the correlating articles in Saturday's Guardian and
am disappointed that I missed this last night but a gig / single launch got in my 'last minute' way.
I thought the articles were incredibly humerous... and am really disappointed to have missed this as am fascinated by string theory and quantum physics.
I wish I had been born a genius myself.
DAMN ME.
It's on BBC2
at 11.20.
It is also
on iPlayer if anyone missed it.
sweet
i never seen the start of it

link for ya all, I'm watching it now.
This was great
I think I may have to watch it again as I missed parts.
A great mix of science and the moving personal story of both E and his dad. Perhaps ruined by a few to many *oh-so-arty* "walking with music" shots.
