Not mentioned enough on here. He's actually one of the greatest artists of ever, no doubt in my brain.

Also, I've never heard anyone say anything bad about him (serious), and I guess this is the best place to come to here people slag stuff!!

But yeah, ND love, fave song? Album? moment? Anything. I used him to woo my current girlfriend (year and a half now, going strong).

*hear

oh god i suck

really don't know very much of his stuff but

I absolutely adore 'Northern Sky'.

buy it all

go now

hmmmm

i cant really pick a favourite album... i have really fond places in my heart for five leaves left and bryter layter...

i think my favourite song is "At The Chime Of A City Clock" though...

greatest singer/songerwriter ever?

probably

to be honest

Yeah

Basically he obsoletes every other acoustic-y singer-songwriter.

So give up, acoustic-y singer-songwriters, or evolve into something better, like Neutral Milk Hotel.

*pre-obsoletes

Would be a stronger way of putting it.

art thou saying

that NMH is superiour to ND?

hmmm

most

influential artist on me... felt a huge connection with him on many levels and was moderately obsessed with his music / anything written about him / his life story etc. for a couple of years. the lyrics of fruit tree sum his life up almost eerily perfectly...

i love nick drake

He...

is truly great, I don't listen to him enough anymore. Was a huge part of my Cambridge days. 'Pink Moon' and 'Place to Be' for me.

:D

What do you think of the recent compilations

of old bits & bobs? Do they all have the same things on them? I've got the 3 albums but if the others are worth buying I might get them too

get

time of no reply and/or made to love magic. they have the post-Pink Moon stuff on them which is essential.

What about the 'Family Tree'

early recordings one - strictly for the hardcore?

if it's the same stuff

as the tamworth in arden bootleg (which is think it is) then it's really not essential. It shows him having some good fun playing some nice covers but there are no really good songs on there and his guitar playing hasn't quite reached the utterly sublime heights it would later.

if you're a big ND fan then get it and you'll enjoy it for what it is. But you probably won't listen to it a lot.

Wow

no slagging here either. Yeah, he definately beats the ass off any other singer songwriter. He got it so bone achingly right. Its criminal that he got over looked. If ANYONE today wrote an album anything like any of his three, they would be lauded to the heavens. LAUDED!!

He's lovely iniit.

wonderful singer and songwriter

not to mention a phenomenally gifted and imaginative acoustic guitarist.

the cambridge thing is funny. his music always reminds of of cambridge/grantchester meadows...

Pink Moon

Best song - "things behind the sun"

(which I played at the Nick Drake tribute in Tanworth in 2006 pop pickers)

I have read criticism of him. Not his playing though - that was unworldy it was so good.

His lyrics have had plenty of pasting. Can be construed as fairly one dimensional with most revolving around seasons, elements, nature etc. "a bit 6th form" some have said.

Sometimes they are a bit twee but I'd say always very poetic.

favourite singer songwriter ever

fav album - Pink Moon
fav song - From the Morning

really special talent. such a pity he died so young.

It's a shame

That the estate keep using him in adverts. Dying's handy. Anyone heard The Pentangle?

Gabrielle Drake

Saw a bit of some s*ite 70's risque movie the other day. Total full frontal of Nicks sister.

I placed the age of the film at around the time of Nicks severe illness.

I felt very confused.

^

Shit Hot, yet I've never heard an album :(

nd

nick drake was a great songwriter. very earthy lyrics. kind of biblically so in some songs. i like chime of the city clock, river man, northern sky, saturday sun, loads, can't choose just one

if you want negativity

I love Nick Drake but....

Some of his lyrics are really wishy-washy and teen poetryish.
That flute instrumental on Bryter Layter is fucking awful.
Some of 'Five Leaves Left' is really embarrasing - 'Man In A Shed' is the one that springs to mind. His songwriting was still relatively unformed at this point.

HOWEVER
I do absolutely love him and 'Pink Moon' is amongst the most perfect records ever made.

'man in a shed'

i think that's a tuuune. Favourite lp 'Pink Moon' for me. favourite song probably 'voices'

i think it's the line

'you'll find out sheds are nicer than you thought' that makes me think he wasn't quite ready to be canonised at that point.

"Road"

FTW!

Black Eyed Dog

I do enjoy Nick Drake, though my favourite material of his is the work which hasnt been embellished by other musicians. Despite, Joe Boyd and co doing their best to record him I feel that the moments captured of him on his own like on "Black Dog" encapsulate the man and his music better...

definitely the greatest solo artist, imo...

i got into him quite late, only a couple of years ago or so. all of his albums are fantastic, my prefered one really depends on my mood. Bryter Later's probably the strongest record, but i listen to Five Leaves Left most, as 'Cello Song' was the first of his material i heard. i just find absolutely everything about him really intreaging. i've been down to tanworth-in-arden a couple of times, it's a really tranquil place, you should go. whenever i'm feeling particularly bored with living in a big city, or if i've got a lot on my mind i'll go down, wander down the lanes, speak to people, even go and visit the churchyard. what hits you is how humble people are down there, to them he was nothing special, just another local. there are some photo's in the pub there, it's really nice. i can't believe that any of the better singer-songwriters since Nick Drake haven't been influenced by him.

I love Nick Drake

BUT

Sometimes I find Bryter Layter quite hard to listen to. Depending on what mood I'm in, it can sometimes come across slightly like a Disney soundtrack

agreed

Always scores highest in best 100 polls but I really dislike it

it has some of his best songs

and some absolute rubbish and not much inbetween.

I prefer the acoustic version of 'fly' off whichever bootleg it is.

Hazey Jane II is every idea early belle and sebastian ever had contained in one song. It was quite depressing as a young B&S fan to hear that for the first time and think 'oh my god, they ripped off literally everthing about this song'. See also 'Northern Sky'.

true

that's exactly what i thought when first hearing it, too. i love Tigermilk, infact it's one of my favourite albums, probably more because of the time i found it rather than the strength of the actual record, but...

i don't think

it denigrates B&S. their songwriting is different lyrically and it's a lot more pop than ND.

But still it is blatant. Right down to how ND and Stuart Murdoch sing. The brass arrangements, the guitar sound. Everything is right there on Hazey Jane.

Listen to "Parasite"

then "Subterranean Homesick Alien" by Radiohead...and you see his influence

Only had a best of

So this week i bought the new box set.

Wow

He's a bit good isn't he.

Nick Drake's

Pink Moon was officially the first album i ever owned, my mum and dad gave me their copy when i was about 6 because i liked it so much. 'Road' is just lovely. I <3 Nick Drake.

...

a friend of the family give me the Fruit Tree box set, the original one, when i was younger, it was immaculate. i didn't know what it was, never listened to it and eventually sold it to the guy at the local independent store for £15. i've never seen another one anywhere, really gutted now. he stiched me up like a kipper, the bastard.

i've had five leaves left for ages

and always liked it a lot... i only got pink moon a week or two ago and i think i already love it even more.
favourite song is probably road.
