We (instrumental/post rock three piece band from Manchester) have a gig at the Betsey in January. What's it like from either a gig goer or a band's point of view? I can see from their website that they put on lots of gigs but you can't get a feel for the place by looking at a screen.
Its small and dark and actually fun to play
but the promotors last time I played there (Plum) were so far up their own arses they actually digested their food twice.
The smallest venue....
we've ever played in! Moscow played out the back and up the stairs for half the gig and I went into the side room. The sounds not great either, but if you like intimacy you cant beat it! :)
i saw
Fionn Regan there in the downstairs bit. you could probably get about 30 people in there at a squeeze.
:(
I know someone who works for Plum and she is nice, so shush.
she probably wasn't working for plum 'back then'
cos prole was in a band a million years ago.
It's a really nice little venue.
Increibly small though.
Small??
And the promoter was asking how many people we would be bringing with us. Sounds like if we brought the usual they wouldn't all get in. But intimate we like and poor sound - well that's nearly every venue we played at.
It fits 50 people max.
The sound is pretty good. The promoters are totally capitalism in action though.
what makes you say that?
50 people?
As if! 50 children maybe. Small, skinny children.
yeah
I'm tiny, and I reckon you could fit about 20 people comfortably.
fits 50 pretty easily
Burnst?
Is it?
is it?
I know Burnst! I love Burnst! Hi Burnst.
oh, not Burnst
they are great though.
i like it
it's nice
My band played a gig there in March this year...
It is a tiny tiny venue... like, holds about 20 people comfortably. The sound for us was a bit shit... but in terms of fun time vibes, it was one of the best ones as we just rocked right out.. if that makes sense.
teeny tiny weeny
but nice. Reminds me of Flambards' Victorian Village...!
It's
just round the corner from my flat and I quite like it.
you live in farringdon?
I nearly lived in exmouth market but realised I couldn't afford it. :(
Almost
I live just near the top end of Exmouth Market, actually.
tiny
LAYMAR - not Burnst
ManchesterMusic said of us "monstrous moments of sonic brutality are broken by measured pauses and the use of semi-classical piano sounds forced onto electrical skewers. It’s big stuff and the shuddering, oscillating sound effects deliver an ear damaging bonus to the band’s rather distinctive interpretation of progressive rock. Possible one of the most maverick and interesting bands in Manchester right now."
We know of Burnst.
The description
'three-piece post-rock band from Manchester' is basically identical, so...
Burnst scare the bejesus out of me, anyway. They're very intense people, and their music sounds like the soundtrack to a sloppily-conceived murder. Good though.
Your music is also good.
WHAT?!!?
we're all very nice!!!
Haha
I'm basing this on how you look on-stage, I'm sure you are actually very nice in reality.
Sorry!
All these people knobbing on about the promoters
I'm a bloody poet, I've played the Betsey tens of thousands of times and I've never had any problem at all?
go niall!
YEAH!
18 Jan 2008
Thanks for all the info.
That's the date we're on if anyone's interested. If you do come along say hello to us.
Also on are Autumn Chorus.
As I said we're an instrumental band (not post rock in the EITS/Mogwai/GSYBE mold or any of their derivatives). There's stuff on our myspace recorded a while back from a live gig. I find it hard to pigeon hole our music so I don't try any more.
shit!
never play there. especially for plu. My friend is in a band. he said they fucked him over.
My band played a great gig there last year in march.
Pretty tiny... the sound was fucked, but boy did we have fun... and we filled the 'room'.. :D
loove
i love the Betsy, its probably my favourite venue in London despite it's size... would love to play there! do Plum still run it?
