were genius. Babyshambles and DPT are horrible, but the libertines were great. Agreed? They were like the first band i loved.

Hated them at the time
but can see in retrospect they had some good songs. I wouldn't call them genius though, they're too derivative of other bands imo.
Agreed.
I only really got into them after Pete had left, and then I really liked them. Not genius though, clever song lyricists etc, but not genius.
...
No. Shit + Shit = Terashit.
Oi !
I think genius is a bit strong
But I think Can't Stand Me Now and Don't Look Back Into the Sun are very good songs.
were genius at their time
but not really now.
i think if doherty had committed suicide then they'd be genius
(see also : Ian Curtis thread)
...
I'm laughing. Not at you, but at the dumbness.
Or if they'd never gotten big
see: The Only Ones (who they admittedly stole a whole lot from)
not that much
They were influenced by them for sure, but i dont think they stole from them as such.
I agree
Not the first band I loved, though. And actually I've never really loved them at all. But they were actually really good, or at least 'Up The Bracket' was. The s/t one was a heap of shit, and at least one of the melodies is stolen from a Nuggets song, but I think if it wasn't for the whole NME connection then people on here would be able to examine it much more objectively as a remarkably fine collection of songs. As well as also a brilliant exercise in mythos-making, but thats another story.
genius ? No.
A few very good songs, usually badly produced on record, yeah !
Although they're not the greatest band ever
They did basically get me into music, and were the first band I really loved. They also kinda made me love some things I still do nowadays in music, which is basically energy and honesty...
*or even that good...
they were quite average really
It's weird
how the first band you get obsessed with can have that effect. I had a similar thing with The Wildhearts when I was about 14. Even now my favourite music is upbeat, melodic and rocking. And plus I totally don't care about the cool points I lose for liking them!
their non-album tracks are probably their strongest works, imo
The Delaney
All At Sea
Mayday
Don't Look Back Into The Sun
Smashing
What A Waster
Never Never
Bangkok
in that order, for me.
The Libertines
were one of the worst bands of all time, and if you think otherwise you smell... of wee.
They were great.
The first album remains really good, alhough I don't listen to it too much these days.
bf
They are genius compared to, oh I don't know- a brass band made up of people with very very thin lips, but compared to good music, they are very average verging on poor and spectacularly annoying. Thanks for asking
looking back
they were actually rather good, especially in comparison to the awful dross they've inspired like the view and the arctic monkeys
You can't really compare the View and the Arctic Monkeys though.
I was pretty critical of the Arctic Monkeys during the furore over their first album and never got what all the fuss was about but a friend gave me the second album to listen to and there' actually some really strong songs on there.
They also seem to have an admirable wilfully obstinate "we're gonna do what we do and we aren't really bothered if it's what people expect" streak which marks them out as far less desperate and far more potentially interesting than any of their contemporaries in the same NME-endorsed guitar band territory.
I didn't like Arctic Monkeys
'til I saw them live. They're fantastic live.
I didn't like the Artic Monkeys
then I saw them live. Worst gig ever.
They were far from the first band I loved
But I did fall in love with them.
I reckon I saw them around 10 times. I first aw them in 2002, I was trying to get freelance work as a photographer. I took loads of pics of them at the Stoke on Trent sugarmill. I have still got the negs and I am dead proud of them.
I saw them at several pubs during their guerrilla gigging days. I went to one gig outside the Duke of Clarence pub In highbury and Islington. It was so packed that we couldnt get in, we had to watch them through the window.
Yes, they were a truly brilliant band. For one album that is. The second one was a complete let down.
they're amazing
if they were signed to sub pop, DiS would love them
the libertines only
made one decent album and even that wasn't that good. Babyshambles are just terrible, down in albion is ok but shotters nation is awful
the libertines LP > up the bracket LP
maybe one day i'll meet someone who shares this deluded opinion.
deluded yes.
i dont think the second is as bad as people make out, i like it. but its not as good as it should have been.
I actually agree
Mainly cos I reckon the songs are better on the second album, I dunno, it seems a lot more dramatic. It's probably that I like to watch bands' demises unfold on record...
I thought they were great
When What A Waster came out I played it to death. Same with the first album. The second album was a massive let down though.
First album, brilliant
Second album, not so good
So far, so according to type. However, although DPT are obviously shite, Babyshambles are not immediately recogniseable as such. Shotters Nation is a very good record.
What A Waster:
Absolute brilliance.
The rest: Well, it was downhill from there really, wasn't it?
The intro to 'Cant stand me now'
sounds very very similar to the intro of 'Making your mind up' by Bucks Fizz.
One
brilliant album is all a band needs to be considered great.
Theirs was the first fan club I ever joined and I was....23! lol
They got me back into guitar music after many years listening to electronic.
a good band
but not a GREAT band.
I think Babyshambles might be better actually.
You LIE!
:)
The Libs are great
especially loved the tracks:
Death On The Stairs
France
Boys In The Band
Narcissist
I Love You But You're Green
Never Never
The Delaney
Music When The Lights Go Out
The Libertines....
are very far from genius, one good album and one average album surely does not constitute genius.
1st album vs 2nd album
The 1st album is great but i would have preferred if Bernard Butler had produced it. The 2nd one is just ok. However, it is kinda a miracle there was a 2nd album at all because of the circumstances surrounding the band at the time
I don't like them
and I never did. Always struck me as a bland and derivative
Genius - no
perfect, for a short period - yes
The Libs and their descendants
are fucking awful.
Not one good song between them.
Not one.
they were rubbish then
and they're rubbish now. One for 2 bands that have actually made me fall asleep, after seeing Fugazi 3 times in a row then to see a band of such low quality the day after.
The Libs had
They had an English charm, poignant lyrics and rough and ready rock and roll which marked them out from the drizzle about now. I'm thinking bands like The Enemy and The View lack any of the intelligence that graced Up The Bracket. How could you fall asleep with the energy and charisma of Barat and Doherty? Moron.
i absolutely agree with you
but for a split-second i forgot what year it is.
...
You're actually describing Million Dead's first album, which I seem to recall came out around the same time.
The Libertines, on the other hand, are an absolute shower in every possible aspect.
Genuis?
i don't think so. they released a fairly decent first LP with some very good tracks, but the second album is just plain bad. they're very overrated in my opinion. each to their own though.
They
were ok. I never really got into them. A few songs were alright but I've never understood why they get as much praise as they do. Don't do anything for me at all.
