GOWNS
Gowns are a band as haunting as they are haunted. Searching for salvation amongst the clutter of our everyday existence they tell us stories of never-ending summers, broken lives and shining revelation, all soaked in the dirty realism of a wilderness America. Revolving around the partnership of Erika Anderson - previously the guitar wrangler in Amps For Christ - and Ezra Buchla - ex-horror show vocalist and programmer for The Mae Shi - Gowns cast an apocalyptic net over a broad church of influences, hauling in their fractured folk songs with cracked electronics, lending their confessional lyrics the directness of a spooked grunge approach, whilst embracing their smart oscillating pop with troubled atmospherics. Their debut full-length 'Red State' is out now on UTR and Erika and Ezra will be joined by improv-drummer Jacob Felix Heule (also of Ettrick) and bassist Daniel Brummel (also of Ozma) for this tour.

JOHN MAUS
Austin, Minnesota's John Maus is a maniac on a bloody crusade - a tortured evangelist on a mercenary quest to rid our world of villainous defilers of The Gospel of True Love. By turns shockingly infectious and disarmingly unpredictable, his music conflates a perplexing marriage of Moroder's 'Never Ending Story' and classical 12-tone renegades of 20th century past, harking THE NEW path which resurrects romance from its post-modern shackles, and reignites the promise of a better world. John's second album 'Love Is Real' is out now on UTR and sees the man step out of the shadow of assoicates Arial Pink and Panda Bear with an apocalyptic journey through the nostalgic streets of home towns deep into the recesses of the human heart. It's a mixture of exploratory synthesiser theatrics, tensely-strung bass lines and insistent drum machine clicks and pops, all set off by John's deeply resonant reverb-drenched vocal.

THE STICKS
Swapping between cheap guitar and stripped down kit, these two Brighton dudes wrestle a stompin' gooey blues mess from their instruments, akin to Coachwhips or Country Teasers, with the rudimentary ideas found in the more inept efforts of mid-sixties teen bands such as The Chimney Sweeps, The Keggs or The Shaggs thrown in for good measure. All in all, they're an awesome, clattering, runaway train of a party band! A split 10" with Hands on Heads is out now on UTR.

John Maus made some of the ceiling collapse
when we played with him in Sheffield. It was awesome. He was awesome. So good live.
yeh
john said it was nuts, went into his scream during too much money and the ceiling exploded!

hey hey
it's the last night of the tours and our last show for an age! come make some merriment!
x
mince pies
tonight

I had to leave early
because it ran late when he played at Barden's last week :(
i swear that happens at every bardens show ever
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
True
It was kind of ridiculous though, what time did he come on? 12.15? I didn't fancy a night sleeping at Liverpool Street. At least I got to see Sic Alps though...
yeh sorry about that
had some van problems with gowns which meant we had to push things back 40 mins in the end so they could soundcheck too, hope you understand.
x
he's playing Manchester tonight...
i fancied it, but the Myspace tracks aren't that great. In my heart i know i should go, it's only five pounds, and really easy to get to, but it's REAL cold.
foolish decision.
people should go see gowns too. they were well good when they played manchester earlier in the week, even if NO ONE was there.
GO
PS:
I think one of Tristan's many bands are supporting.
Confirmed.
people of manchester:
you are all really stupid for not going to john maus tonight.
people of the rest of the uk: don't be so stupid.
I very much agree
Why were so few people there? I think 5/the ten people there were DiSers. Its ridiculous. He was so good. My friend who had never even heard of him before was completely blown away- YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE!
GOWNS are in Brighton
tonight! YEH! whilst John makes his way to Blackpool *

how was blackpool??

AMAZING!!!
He went down so well, loads of people came from afar to see him, so everybody who was there to see him were really up for it... then there were the bemused people who turned up for a birthday party, and then the guys who hadn't heard him before who thought he was fabulous. There's loads of pictures and vids.
The great thing about the vids are that the people dancing in the background are a band called Mrs. Cakehead who just turned up for a party, and didn't have a clue who he was.

Oh and heres what others said
Some guy who didn't really know him:
"JOHN MAUS is the famous guy from the US who topped the bill here really, although his set came midway. I'd heard his music online and thought this is the worst shit I've ever heard, some kind of vile mix of synthesiser pop and prog rock with New Age lyrics! Then live it makes huge sense to see him jumping about and the music at ENORMOUS distorted volume (my ears still ringing) - people cracking up continually as it was basically very odd and funny in a kind of creepy way...his fans mouthing along to every word at the front were even stranger. I guess it reminded me a lot of Andrew WK's attitude - a kind of wilful, obtuse, grating approach - but by the last song (a catchy thing about 'taking someone's hand in the cold dark city' I think) you are into it with no irony, punching the air along with him...what a performer!"
Some girl who had never heard of him:
"John Maus - what can I say?! The man is a one-off and I'd definitely see him again when I get the chance. I really didn't know what to expect from his live shows - at first I thought the humour of his stuff was just me being weird after listening to him on the net. But his show just blew me away - a very unique and unusual performance."
The girl whose birthday it was!
"Really blown away to have someone soooooooo fab at the party - and everyone really loved him - the feedback I've had since has been so positive - I just wish I had realised he was selling CD's as everyone would have got one for Xmas prezzies!
I'm gonna send off for a vinyl!"
i saw gowns in Glasgow!
they were great. apart from the song where the keyboard etc. guy wailed for about ten minutes. I didn't like that one bit. White Like Heaven was stunning though.
I missed John Maus though due to copious chatting outside. I don't know if i'm sad or not.
you should be
you stupid bitch.
you mutilate my soul
:(
