"The Godlike Genius award honours those music icons that have shaped the music landscape over the years".
Er, so how have they done that then??
i am bewildered by the manics
i dont understand how they are/were so big. 'motorcycle emptiness' is the only bearable thing ive ever heard of them.
........
Listen to Generation Terrorists, one of the best debut albums I've ever heard.
Gold Against the Soul was pretty great too.
Ooh
And you were doing so well until that second line
Total bollocks.......
no decent music in over 13 years!
WTF?
By releasing what
is widely considered to be one of the bleakest, harrowing but remarkable albums of the last 20 years.
By inspiring hundreds, thousands of devotees to follow their every move and hang on their every word.
By inspiring a group of people to look outside the music and explore a whole world of literature and philosophy.
By being one of the biggest selling British bands of the late 90s/early 00s, and releasing (arguably) 4 or 5 great records.
By being able to straddle a career that includes self mutilation, songs about alienation and depravation, and I Love Hoovers t-shirt and festival headline slots - and still being loved by the beered-up man in the street and the make-up wearing confused student in the dorm.
in response...
i dont like any of their songs
Thats becuase they dont have any
lulza
!
Wow!
So before the manics came along, no recording artist in the history of music had achieved any/or all of the above?! Im sold! ;OP
I didn't say no-one else had done it.
Or hadn't, whatever
But you did spell it out
like those achievements were exclusive to them and them only.
No, I was answering the
original question, which was 'what have they done then'.
That's what they did.
And (the last point particularly)
The point is they did ALL of those things, which is exclusive to them.
They made me learn to love my hoover
may I direct you here
for some thoughts on N Wire.
http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/2714792
as for self mutilation, not cool really is it. He didn't even have the bollocks to spell the words correctly on his arm..Over rated, political poppycock. As for NYE 1999, the worst night out of my life watching them in Cardiff.. Laughable.
:)
and these are all the reasons why I still can't help loving them.
wow!
never a judge a book by it cover!
they inspired this
for sure

This award would have made sense 10 or so years ago.
What have they done to deserve it since?
ding ding ding
correct
So because they've done nothing you like
for ten years, then now shouldn't get it? So McCartney shouldn't have got it either? Or New Order? Or...whoever, I can't think right now.
...
Yeah, that's right.
no they shouldn't get it
because nicky wire is an abomination of a human being
What's wrong with Nicky Wire?
...
He's a man who wears a dress. That's WRONG.
Also, I'm not that hot on him as a bassist.
he is a cunt

"If we're not impulsive, and we don't realise that we're fallible, we may as well just be the sort of boring band that are in Q"
christ
i hadn't heard that billy bragg quote before. wire really does come across as a cunt.
THE GODLIKE GENIUS AWARD
is bullshit, you think Ian Brown's ego needed feeding anymore??? NME die.
did
ian brown really win it once?? he cant even sing!
It's a redundant award to redundant old bands.
All it means that in an age where most acts are here today and gone tomorrow, they are still together and can still pull the punters.
But they were always wank.
My least favourite band of all time
Not only are they shit, but worse than that they are shit that thinks its important. Politicaly important at that.
I hate inane sloganeering at the best of times, but when married to ploddy verse chorus verse chorus middle eight chorus end route one shite its just too much to bear.
Oh and one wears a dress. Ooooh, take that the government!
The Holy Bible is brilliant
Is so associated with Richie Edwards though that giving this award to these three now-twats is completely redundant. On the other hand, it's Q, so they probably prefer Everything Must Go.
i prefer everything must go :(
...
Me too!
But wasn't the word 'uninspiring'
invented mostly to describe it?
nah
Everything Must Go is better. It has richie's best songs + i actually think that the Manics' early experiments with being anthemic are better than them trying to be the Existential Punk Rock Guns N Roses.
But how can you possibly compare
"Here's a boy, you want a girl so tear off his cock, tie his hair in bunches, fuck him call him Rita if you want," to "click click click inside thunder"??? I don't think the boy in 'Yes' was the only one getting neutered there.
how can anyone
say they prefer fucking Everything Must Go to The Holy Bible and claim to be into alternative music, or anti-'Q' type music, or whatever? Everything Must Go more or less invented Dad-rock, it was the sound of a decent band instantly turning shit at the loss of their best member. The exact point I started hating the Mancis was the minute I heard A Design For Life. I'm sorry, but anyone of the opinion that The Holy Bible wasn't their best album by MILES is just plain wrong.
Richie edwards
did write most of everything must go though
the lyrics
much of the music was written to the lyrics, rather than the songs already existing
i could be wrong though
No
He only wrote the lyrics on one of the songs, didn't he? Or maybe a couple he co-wrote.
two were solo
five more were co-written.
no
three were solo - kevin carter, small black flowers, removeables.
i'm probably wrong about the co-writes as well.
kovacs:
you're a massive, massive ninny.
I agree with him in sentiment
But probably not by the critical thinking displayed in his argument.
no it isn't,
it's NME. although you +10 indie points for the cutting comment about Everything Must Go. RICHIE 4 EVER
Oh wait it was NME
whoops, picture confused me.
Still, Q is just NME for grown-ups. Same ears, different ages.
it's probabaly for being such a successul band
over such a long time, and being really important to lots of people.
and after the solo records were good [purging] exercises.*
* - may not make sense to anyone who doesn't listen to the same radio station as me at work
At Glastonbury
I was planning on going to see Beiruit, probably to look cool; also the Pyramid Stage was responsible for me having a massive panic attack. One of my friends said to mine "Fuck off Rob, you love the Manics. Just go and see them"
So I did. And they were amazing. And I realised that sometimes I try and run away from it because of their lacklustre recent albums, but they are my favourite band.
And yeah, there are bands who are more original, and bands who innovate and bands with more talent. But no one has ever made music that has meant as much to me as the Manics did. Whilst a title "God like Genius" is a bit silly for any artist, I truly love them and think that they are great. So there.
This ^^^
except trade the manics for oasis. and the whole glastonbury bit.
Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Don't sully my beautiful prose by allying it with Oasis!
OASIS! OASIS!
etc etc ad nauseum
glastonbury
i had a very similar experience, i loved the manics, my first gig was the manics back in '01. Having seen them tear through a set of classics in '05 and loving every second, i was terrified by "your love alone..." as its a terrible song.
anyway, i still went to see the manics, and i remembered by they were the most important band i listened to when i was a teenager. And my friends who saw them were wowed by them and said they were the best band of the weekend.
Godlike geniuses? yes. Whilst the early manics propaganda of 20 million records then splitting up was perhaps a lot more talk then walk, the Holy Bible is without a doubt one of the most important records of the 90s. Lyrically, its untouchable. Stark, repulsive imagery and a manifesto against stark, rock guitars. Underproduced and understated.
its the musical equivilent of watching a documentry about Holocaust, Self Harm, Anoexica and Old People wanting to commit suicide.
i'd like to see any of you make a record that honest and brilliant.
The manics knew they were for real - and the holy bible is proof that they were.
oh and
additional credit for the bassline of "Archives of Pain"
they're fucking bobbins
nicky wire is an idiot. he's completely irrelevent. what a dullard.
I think they are truly abysmal
they have written a few contenders for worst song of all time. My particular nomination would be that Roses in the Hospital song.
I own Generation Terrorists and Gold Against the Soul. Both were acceptable at 15 but are now acutely painful to listen to and devoid of artistic merit.
A handful of tolerable songs....
weighed down by loads of shite songs and albums. Nicky wire is an absolute bawbag of the highest order who still thinks he is relevant today, and takes himself far too seriously. Away and play with the buses Nicky, we don't care what you have to say!!!
is this a parody
of a yes_ post?
sort of
but it actually represents my views
You've obviously never heard S.Y.M.M!
...
Confession: I've never understood the pure, raw hatred directed at that song.
...
On the other hand, Generation Terrorists and Gold Against The Soul must be stricken from the record. Those albums don't exist for me.
C'mon man
It is appalling
...
Why?
The context of this song
Well I could go on and on
But it's still unfashionable
To believe in principles
...
Okay.
Not being funny yeah, but most of the Manics' lyrics are utter shite.
i like
1985. thats a lovely song.
they used to be my favourite band
and still hold the title of recording my favourite album, and as such warrant an award like this as much as any band in my view. but really, there's nowt particularly genius about em.
*whistles the solo to arhives of pain*
*realises he can't whistle, let alone manage of 1minute46seconds of it*
Remember that Morrisey rejected it
So that always results in a last minute scramble around for someone that will accept the "your career's over fuck off" award, the manics said themselves (in Q nonetheless after winning record of the year) that they considered their career on the downward slope before the success of this one. I honestly think half of you lot slag them off without listening to them (same with idlewild) because it seems a cool indie scenster thing to do... ok they play arena sized dad rock but so do kasabian and countless others that are fauned over on these very forums and NO ONE gets the hypocrisy of it.
GENIUS AT WHAT?
Swamping us all in dark grey clouds of pseudo-intellectual, midget brown-rock filth?
GENIUS AT WHAT?
Swamping us all in dark grey clouds of pseudo-intellectual, midget brown-rock filth?
God's not all that smart really
so it's probably a fair award.
This thread seems to be pretty much love or hate
but personally I'm pretty much in the middle.
They never really 'meant' anything to me, but I love The Holy Bible, like Generation Terrorists and can tolerate the first half of This Is My Truth...
Can't stand Everything Must Go though
i say without shame or exaggeration
that theyre one of the most important bands in the world to me. the manics are one of a very small handful who've had a resounding impact on my life. they made me give a shit about art, literature, music and life in general...
but that doesnt mean they deserve some sort of validatory nod from the nme, as if to say 'fine work boys, youre accepted into the british rock canon'.
the very fact that the nme think theyre in a position to do that is frankly laughable.
the very fact that
james, nicky and sean have accepted this from such a rag is a bit disheartening to be honest, I mean they're prime fodder for Q readers now so it's quite right they should party with Kylie and Bono to celebrate, but can you imagine a cringeable issue of The Kooks, Carl Borat, the ginger from Gallows and, erm, Newton Faulkner falling over themselves to make up a reason why the band didn't shape their piss poor music?
NME can fuck off
especially when they haven't put YLAINE or SATT in their top 50 this year, apparently. Either way, the Manics are and always will be my all time favourite band. The Holy Bible is the best album I've ever heard and although they're inconsistent on pretty much every other album, when they're good, they're the best.
I've been surprised (pleasantly) by their success this year. The gigs have been excellent this year and they've looked fantastic. New stuff's pretty decent too. It's nice to see them getting recognition but as the NME are such a bunch of two faced cunts, it's annoying that it has to be from them. Anyone who thinks of them as late 90s MoR rock really has to check out the Richey era stuff - mostly the Holy Bible.
Genius At What ?
Don't mind James Dean Bradfield as he has talent.Cannot be doing with Nicky 'look at me' Wire who just seems an obnoxious numpty with an over-inflated ego.
I agree with Motorcycle Emptyness being a stand out track and that was way back when Richie Edwards was in the band.
If I tolerated them, then my children would be next!
I cannot tolerate them. The main reason for this? They are all fat, apart from Nicky Wire, who is thin!
I cannot abide fat people.
Neither can I abide thin people.
The only people I tolerate are the medium-sized.

Good to see one of my threads getting more than three comments! I thought this may at least get a flurry of "they're great"/"they're shit" posts, and I was right!
I'm pretty ambivalent regarding the Manics, I really like The Holy Bible but their stuff of the last ten years or so has not grabbed me at all, I just couldn't think of how they'd 'changed the music landscape', but that's more to do with NME's stupid award description than any shortfall on behalf of the Manics.
If I was in a band, I'd want
the population to have strong opinions on me. Love/Hate etc. Which a large quantity of people on here seem too. Changing the musical landscape is a bit baffelling, but I do think they have been one of the inspirational 'thinking'bands of the last 15 years that have inspired this generation. They stood alone from bands they were lumped with in the brit-pop scene such as oasis and stone roses when they were writing songs with a completely different lyrics and a totally different agenda. The 'genius' title doesn't have to be expressed through their style of music neccesarily
I love Marmite
I'd go so far as to say they are pretty undervalued, especially by the indier than thou crowd who are far too cool to like em.
They have always been criticized at almost every stage of their career. When started, lots of people despised them because they were sloganeering and anti lad. Obviously they had no commercial viability with Holy Bible and thats around the only time they gained any artistic credibility or cool, despite the obvious personal issues in the band. Then in their later career they've been pounded first for going commercial, then for trying to go back to their roots and so on and so forth. They can never win.
On Everything Must Go for those who think it is a non Richey record, half of it was written (music and lyrics) before he left, the second half came later, so the finished article would not have been radically different. Whether it would have come out at all though is quite another matter.
Fact is they've stuck around and carried more fans through years and years of changes, and not petered out. They still have fans who go to every single gig on every single tour they do, and in fairness there aren't many bands who in their later days inspire that kind of devotion.
God Like Geniuses, well that is up for debate, but as a continually important band on many levels over the course of 15 years, I think it's about time they got a few gongs.
