The 1st Smiths album comes to mind. The songs are great but the production is so bad!

wesley willis

greatest hits vol. 2

they didnt pick up the low end of his keyboard enough.

heh

...

I always thought that was really well produced when I thought Rick Rubin was at the desk. Now I know it's Ross Robinson, I wish to revise my opinion.

Is that in some way wrong?

Seriously, I don't understand how anyone could say Relationship sounds crappy when placed next to what came before it. What was it called again? In/Remove All Bass And Mids/Out?

:D

Now this I agree with.

Don't you think

that over time the production becomes so attached to the song that its difficult to tell them apart? I mean, I know that all the Misfits and Minutemen records are technically shit but I'd hate to hear them any other way.

Apart from live records where in a perfect world everything would sound like Stop Making Sense.

albums get the production they deserve

generally. great songs/performance always shines through. shit production doesnt make an album shit. st anger wouldnt be any better if it was well produced.

Hmm...

....yeah i suppose this can be true in some cases.

^

Is the answer to this thread.

Real Life

by Magazine.

Brilliant brilliant album. Terrible production.

i like it

it sounds as unfriendly, european and nasty as it needs to be. the production on shot by both sides is amazing!

Yerself is Steam

Brilliant songs but the production's a mystery.

the production

on Car Wash Hair is absolutely brilliant.

nevermind!

haha

Entertainment

maybe, it's a judgement call.

I prefer the old production

to the Return the Gift sound- I know the drums don't have as much kick but they have that wonderful late-70s kinda snap and pop and hiss sound.

Uh, I described that badly, sorry

I think

I would like Entertainment more if I hadn't heard return the gift beforehand, probs cos the production on Return the gift is really full sounding whereas Entertainment by comparison is quite flat sounding I think.

Rid of me

I'm a massive PJ and Albini fan but he mixed her voice criminally low (guitars sound great mind you). To add insult to injury the CD is mastered way too quiet.

I think it's why she ended up releasing that demos album, which sounds even worse.

Songs for the Deaf

Great album, terrible 'clicky' drums.

rly?

I thought the production on that was pretty good really. One thing you can always say about queens albums is that they're well produced.

great record, great sound.

was listening to this last night for the first time in about 5 years. one mans meat,...etc.

Repeater.

x 10.

I've said this to you before

and I'll say it again.
THE PRODUCTION IS GOOD. IT JUST FITS.

Repeater?

That's well-produced.

Also, in terms of 'great songs', its not a patch on 13 Songs.

Strictl;y Personal - Captain Beefheart

Great songs, terribly cliched pyschedelic production. Apparently he wasn't around when the stupid sound effects were put in, so its not his fault.

...

He said "great songs".

...

Both Million Dead albums. The first one especially. There's punk and there's recorded-in-a-bin.

New Day Rising by Husker Du

Though I still really like it.

the velvet underground

and nico.

no, lo-fi does not have a "distinctive chamr"

Even ignoring the typo

You're still wrong.

Lo-fi + certain styles of music = a massive winner.

I mean, who likes a clean-sounding Guided By Voices?

^5

yesss

i thought i was the only person who hated the production on this album.

Brighten The Corners

Great songs, would have been a great album if it had been produced in a lower-rent studio. Seriously.

^wrong

The Strokes - Is This It

*ducks the barrage of abuse*

most of the songs were live takes

but yeah you're probably right.

daydream nation

one of the worst produced albums ever.

Agreed

It sounds so flat. The songs are 1000 times better live.

yep

i came here to say the same thing. The drums (especially the snare) sounds like its just a binbag filled with tin cans.

first bad brains album

if it was less blurred and muddy sounding itd be one of my favourite records i think

Dog Man Star

suffers from the worst, muddiest mix of any album I've heard.

Legacy edition! Remaster! Now!

Bernard Butler

I think Bernard Butler would agree with you. I think the 1st album is badly produced too. Strangely though, the 1st album b-sides are produced brilliantly (apart form "To The Birds"

the first chameleons album

hmm, what else? probably the first auteurs album. oh, "the sun ain't gonna shine any more" by the walker brothers, too.

I know it was a conscious choice

but the last 65days album springs to mind

mclusky

pain and sadness

Ariel Pink

I can kind of see what he's going for, but I can't listen to more than about three tracks on any of his albums before I feel like someone's holding my head under a swimming pool.

.............

Maybe it was produced in a more understated way, but I think it actually works quite well. I prefer it to The Fall of Math which at times sounds over-produced, although Hole is amazing and the band still shines through overall.

I don't like it

It only works if you can listen to it incredibly loud on very high quality speakers. Which I can't

It does have to be loud!

I can understand your annoyance if you don't have good quality speakers, mine are pretty decent so I suppose I wouldn't know.
I love both albums to be fair, regardless of any preferance to a certain type of production.
I've bought the 2nd album aswell but haven't listened to it yet because I left it at my friends house. I'm becoming impatient, it better be amazing.

Ditto

...i think it was meant to be "clever". Silly 65daysofstatic: if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Anything by Husker Du

worst drum sound ever. Sounds like wooden spoons banging on a tupperware box. But the songs are so great it's only a minor irritation.

Also:

Josef K - The Only Fun in Town
The Replacements - Tim (only the 'Mats could hire a mostly-deaf producer)

Dry by PJ Harvey also sounds a bit flat to me, especially when compared to Rid of Me. Still a fantastic album though.

most stuff

by ride.. especially the early ep's Ride Play and Fall... songs like chelsea girl and like a dream just sound too muddy but are still great

Glad that 'Entertainment' has been mentioned.

It was such a disappointment after the early singles on Fast Records.

teenage fanclub- catholic education

but thats its charm.

TWEEZ

by The Slints.

The production is fucking awful and I'd love to hear how anyone could disagree.

aye...

there are some odd mixing choices on that record. however it is more 'experimental' than a straight up rock record.

Spiderland however is completely marvellous by comparison

it being more experimental

doesn't invalidate it from the thread, does it? its not massively experimental either - it just sounds awful! so much so i can neither get to grips with the songs or bear to try.

Spiderland, whilst not the most amazing production ever in the world, was nearly perfect in terms how the recording and production lent to the mood and atmosphere of the songs.

agreed

tweez sounds horrible.

bromheads jacket

i'm amazed how bad they managed to make this album sound

its already mentioned.

but Daydream Nation has to win 'best record, dreadfully produced' - its a shocker but its still one of my fav's

that said Goo wasn't much better, gets very muddy in places.

a lot of things sound badly produced if they predate cds

and weren't properly remastered, dunno if this is the case for daydream nation

What's with all this hate for the Daydream Nation production?

If it didn't sound as dirty and stuff it wouldn't be the same, a clean-sounding Daydream Nation where all snare sounds and stuff really leaped out of the mix would just not work anywhere like as well.

theres a difference...

...between 'dirty' and 'downright messy'

mind you. DN isn't my fav SY lp anyway, so when it came out, was bowled over by the sheer weight of the sound that fell from the speakers - it was always like peering thru a fog with full beams on. after awhile you just cant be arsed to put the effort in.

the remaster deluxe version is much better. but seeing them play it this year was much much much better still. the record really needs a light forking to aeriate it up a little!

give me Sister any day.

Sister > Daydream Nation

(also Sister's production is just downright brilliant if you ask me)

Young Machetes

Ok, maybe not the Blood Brothers best.. but I've found it to be so compressed and harsh on the ears it's really hard to listen to. Piano Island and Crimes are much more listenable in a production sense.

if you're feeling sinister

isn't amazingly produced, but doesn't have a duff song.

The first

Bloc Party record...the drums aren't just badly mixed, they're badly recorded. The kick drum is like listening to someone hitting a piece of wet cardboard with a shoe.

I think thats what

Epworth was trying for.

i love the drum sound on that album

even though it's quite tupperware-y - everything sounds pretty spiky but it seems to work.

I think the Fickle Public album was a let down production-wise.

Raw Power?

surprised noone has mentioned this, surely one of the most famous examples?

...

Yeah, but I don;t think it's thew production as such it's the levels which you notice if puttin tape on equaliser

I've got the one that Iggy remastered as apparently loads of people were coming up to him asking if he would re-master but all the controls are firmly in the red so unsure as I think there's 1 or 2 versions

But you can turn down and some stuff like solo on 'I need somebody' sound ace with the 'everything in red' and to the max

question

would you have prefered it if it had been more polished?

could argue either way

The Stone Roses

1st album. Sounds a wee bit thin & weedy (apart from resurrection). I have heard Leckie say that this is down to the fact it was never mastered for CD. However, i have the vinyl and it sounds exactly the same

the first

yourcodenameismilo record.

Throbbing Gristle

20 Jazz Funk Greats

*lolz*

i thought

the first ycni:m sounded good.

thisgirl

i liked their tunes, but the production on their album was quite poo, especially the drums.

also, not an album, but the drum production on that first foals 7" when the dude from youthmovies was still in the band was abysmal.

the first

cooper temple clause album

WANK

The second Bloc Party album is badly produced in that Twatknife Lee massively overdid the production so it sounds like fucking MIDI.

(still love it though)

^yes

this is true

Wolf Parade

Fuck you Isaac Brock.

Silent Alarm is the first one to come to mind

I really do not rate Paul Epworth

I thought At War With the Mystics by the Flaming Lips had too many effects on it (yes! I never thought i'd ever say that)

22-20's

The 05/03 EP is great, the alvum - barely listenable
