Cambridge

theres a guy called Simon Baker who books bands for the Barfly now, he used to run Greenmind.

try contacting him! i would give you an address but i dont have one to hand!

Thanks - I'll get onto this.

Massively appreciated.

HOWEVER

Cambridge Barfly is one of the worst venues I've seen in my life. BEWARE!

I've seen plenty of bad venues.

My main aim at the moment it's too get a foot in the door. I've got a (hopefully) cunning plan to start gigging regularly in a small number towns outside of London (rather than playing in a lot of towns just the once) in the hope tha after a few gigs we'll have some sort of following in these pplaces.

This will go wrong of course. I'm not sure how yet but it definitely will. But in the meantime I'm gonna give it a shot...

I'm not talking 'bad' as in small/dirty etc

I'm talking bad as in a pillar in the middle of the stage which has live electricity running through it so that if you have single coil guitars they just SQUEAL constantly.

Wow...

That is a piece of design ingenuity...

apparently...

The pillar issue is being sorted. Or something. I think it's something Barfly inherited from past ineptitude.

I'm sure it is

It's just typical of barfly to crowbar in as many gigs as possible before deciding to sort it out.

used to be called the loft

i hear news of the pillar getting sorted but yeah it's a bit of a mess.

Baker you can email from the Barfly:
Simon.Baker@barflyclub.com

Cambridge has almost as many promoters as gig goers. therapyrock has started doing a few select gigs in cambs, also users on here are jamesdenial and crushingdeathandgrief. Apart from the barfly the best venue (imo) is the Portland arms, just over the road. lots of promoters post their events on these sites:
http://www.wereallneighbours.co.uk/cambridge_events/
http://www.cambridgebands.com/GigCalendar.php

from this you can contact ppl who seem to be putting on the right sort of stuff.

yep

the portland is definately the best venue, the atmosphere is always good and its got pretty decent sound for a 100 capacity pub!!!

I still havent been to the barfly but the Loft was great - the promoters were really friendly, and the sound/stage/lights are brillant - it was just that one pillar that screws it up!

Cambridge

Simon www.greenmind.co.uk put us on in Cambridge at some tiny (but ace) venue, top bloke.

Simon Baker?

Yeah, I've heard of him. Supposed to be quite a good guy.

Oxford

Russell Barker has a night called 'Swiss Concrete' on myspace somewhere, he's been really nice and put us on many times. 'Vacuous pop' are worth finding on myspace too.

Excellent.

Will look into these too...

That's really helpful.

they would definitely love you

at Swiss Concrete!

Swiss Concrete are great

although their regular venue is up for sale, so not sure what's going to happen there.

I'll always recommend Jimmy Evil at the Cellar: www.cellarmusic.co.uk

we've moved!

in a very delayed answer, we're now at the Bullingdon Arms, down near the Zodiac/Academy thing. Every first and tird Thursday of the month. And sometimes other times too if you're really special ;-)
But you can always find us here:
www.myspace.com/swissconcrete

a good friend of mine runs the indie music society's

gigs. they're quite good and get a fair sized crowd and things. i'll mention you to her.

Those gigs have finished haven't they?

If you're talking about Didi?

_

oh, sorry, i meant the university imsoc nights, vertigo.

Brighton

The Gilded Palace of Sin may be worth checking out. Not sure who promotes their gigs but the Prince Albert and the Hope may be worth speaking to.

brighton promoters...

lack of communication
www.myspace.com/lackofcommunicationpromotions (i think...)

melting vinyl
www.myspace.com/meltingvinyl

both put on that sorta thing...

think it's a girl called jo for lack of... and a girl called anna for melting vinyl. brighton's a toughie for shows though from first hand experience...

oxford

there's Swiss Concrete (www.myspace.com/swissconcrete) and Vacuous Pop (www.myspace.com/vacuouspop) - both of which do a lot of good, small gigs but in my experience it's very hard to get any sort of response from them.

You should also try Joal at the Wheatsheaf (mblproductions@gmail.com), he's very good and has put my band on a couple of times. I guess it's also worth trying to contact venues (The Wheatsheaf, Port Mahon and Cellar) directly.

vacuous pop

are rubbish!

ahhhhh ady

such harsh words!

haha

Green mind gigs

Green Mind is running again - www.greenmind.co.uk

Splendid.

You seem to be putting a number of acts who either we like, we have supported or we've had discussions about playing with before. I may well get in touch soon.

Cambridge Barfly

The pillar got sorted. It turned out there was some dodgy wiring in the onstage sockets, which was causing an earthing issue. The pillar is still there, but no nasty hum.
