I'm sure another Foals thread is necessary

but their profile on that sounds of 2008 thing is probably the most annoying music-related thing I have read since I last looked at the Observer music monthly a couple of years ago.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7154631.stm

How badly can one band come across? I'm sure some of it is tongue in cheek, but all this cunty crap about people smashing down walls with fire extinguishers because they are presumably so excited by their exciting music, the photos with the butterfly and tennis clothing, the comments about getting beaten up for putting on math-rock records (WTF?), the nonsensical comments about the Oxford music scene.

gggggggggggahhhhhhhahaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhaarrghfuckoffyoureshit

i dont mind

because i found a live edmund fitzgerald gig on some foals site. that i went to! great...

http://www.foalsband.com/the-edmund-fitzgerald.php

well found

and god bless the ed fitz!

Why do they piss some people off so much?

Is it because they act like they're Battles or someone when they're really just a very good pop band?

Or are seen to act

I mean, they do say they're a pop band in that article.

I think its more that we've reached saturation point

and that several senior people on this here site refuse to believe that any opinion different to theirs on Foals is legitimate

it's things like this

"all this cunty crap about people smashing down walls with fire extinguishers because they are presumably so excited by their exciting music, the photos with the butterfly and tennis clothing, the comments about getting beaten up for putting on math-rock records (WTF?), the nonsensical comments about the Oxford music scene".

Their music doesn't bother me. I don't really think they are shit, just boring and not worth listening to. I just find they come across absolutely horribly in interviews and press and sound like such massive massive cunts. I am aware that they may not be in reality.

I like that sort of stuff though

Why should a band's press 100% reflect reality? They are selling a product. At least they're not claiming to be woo-waa salt o' the earth like all those lad-rock bands and that.

no

it's not about being salt of the earth or anything. I love loads of bands that have a self-generated mythos and use imagination in the way they approach the media and present themselves. But there is something uniquely obnoxious and uniquely cringe-worthy about the way they do it.

OK, wel:

- they do in fairness risk coming across as cunts
- I however like the fact they have a very arrogant approach to making pop music that isn't arrogant in a swaggering way but is rather arrogant in a considered, 'our-band-is-cleverer-than-yours' sort of way.
- I am not sure why this does not translate into cuntdom for me.

good point about image

for proof see Sunn 0))) for how it can be done well.

have you read that profile on the bbc website

I suppose I struggle to believe that it wouldn't annoy most people in some way (although I accept I am more easily riled by people who come across like this than most)

Yes, I have

I suppose I struggle to believe that people wouldn't be a little bit excited by something both catchy and slightly (if not astonishingly- don't eat me alive here music snobs) different. But hey.

...

it's well funny how much they piss people off. Can imagine it might all backfire a bit though.

I agree

I amuse myself with the hatred I can bring up against them just because nobody actually gets beaten up for listening to math-rock you bunch of utter cocks!

I think it's because of...

their haircuts.

I found that

amusing.

But then I found this amusing as well:

fail?

foul

...

Here is my opinion: Flum.

Swank

.

i find that the more i read about foals (especially pieces like this) the more i begin to dislike their music.

which is a shame.

I think it is why when I was a lot younger

I stopped reading interviews in NME or Kerrang or whatever because I realised a lot of bands who I liked were either dull or bell-ends. It's often inevitable with a mainstream band that they will come across badly especially when their promotion is all about creating a certain angle or image.
The only interviews I can bear to read are with those musicians who you know are just ace people and have their head and heart in the right place. These are rarely the very successful or hyped ones.

^

This is one of the many reasons why John Olson interviews are absolutely always brilliant. Best guy ever. Great musician, great label, super funny guy.

I feel sorry for whoever had to write that piece.

Dont worry about it, I reckon this time next year Foals will be in the knackers yard.

Yeah I know that was hilarious wasn't it.

^gamecat

i love you forever for that ed fitz set.

probably one of the most amazing bands i have ever seen :)

once

played a gig with them.
they were on before us.
i cried.
fucking amazing band

^ touche

:D

I feel sorry for people who don't drink.

Cos when you get up in the morning, that's as good as you're gonna feel for the rest of the day.

Foals

seriously feature on every single Bands of 2008 article.
Every one.

well,

they're definately a hype-band now.
Who knows - maybe there will be loads of hype, they release their album and it isn't that good and they fade into obscurity and split up soon after...

eurgh

I read that the other day. It pushes me towards disliking them more.

which?

it just gets boring...
plus people are giving them the publicity they don't want them to have...?

Only in the

"why is there a Foals backlash" thread. It's a cynical way to drum up some hype mang. Look out behind you.

Not even remotely true

Not here anyway

i would like to take this opportunity

to point out that i have never heard a single foals song.
i don't know why that matters in any way, but i just thought i'd get it out there.

quite funny

just went through the sidebar without signing in and predicted it was your thread from the way the title was phrased

i love foals*

* not really

aargh meant to be note

sorry

I haven't heard them, but caught 30 seconds of a very boring looking video, thought sub-sub-Gang of 4, soulless boring nonsense and turned it off.

and then didn't think about it all afterwards apart from seeing such threads.

not sure that any band that can excite such hatred and passion can be totally awful

I don't think...

copying the Rapture would be a strike against any band. Don't The Rapture sound like a million other bands too?

jools holland

when asked in an interview backstage on jools holland and anywhere actually, what are your influences and what are you listening to. They always say Afro-beat, and thats it. because they know that not many people know about it, and Battles and ilk are hugely influenced by Afro-beat. and 'were just different'- to who? im different to a banana, but i dont go on about it!

Heavens above....

Am i the only person that finds Foals a bit 'meh'. Current hype would suggest they are changing the world or something.

They're about as interesting to me as Plain White T's.

^ and that's exactly why there's so much 'we hate Foals' already

If they were just another hype band doing nothing new (with added haircuts) I wouldn't care. It's that the media and, as the original post demonstrates, Foals themselves seem to reckon they're somehow innovative or revolutionary, and therefore heart-stoppingly exciting.

Me? I'd had enough of what they do to last me a lifetime four years ago, thanks.

so...

reading forums like this one remind me of those rare occasions when I have to look up some computer related question in a computer geek forum and i have to sift through kilometers of posts by arrogant, square-eyed retards all claiming to know better than each other. (akin to swimming albini's trench of piss and shit)

it has also confirmed my fear that the music community has evolved into two types of fans:

a. undiscerning, cheap-fix, take-what i'm given, mass-audience hicks who don't appreciate good music when its staring them in the face

and

b. overly-discerning to the point of exclusion, music snobs, who need to get out more and get off their high-horse wankers, who don't appreciate good music when its staring them in the face (which seems to be the angle of most in this thread)

at least foals have something to say, and at least they're doing something amazing and not sitting in a shitty desk-job like you probably are right now as you read this.
that is all.

ps.doctornovocalchords??? i love you - but you must be a drag to hang out with. x

haha

yeah I suck

but your post again raises the question of what is the point of the music board if you can't criticise bands?
I don't actually have a shitty desk job at all thank god but yeah I'm sure everyone here would rather be in a successful band than do a traditional job. Although preferably one that is actually good.

correct

nah man, you don't suck,
you just have bad taste in music. ;)

but i agree with you - these forums are for exactly that - expressing your opinion. i never denied that - merely made my observation about the observations about your observation.

and so on and so forth...

you know...

my disco?!? one of the best australian bands, like, ever. seeing foals actually really reminded me of seeing my disco. which is a huge compliment coming from me. two kudos on user name sir!

What?

Ridiculous categories there and just an all round silly argument

You were sifting through drownedinsound's Music board

for the answer to a computer related question.. sifting through a thread about Foals, at that?

Anyway, what you've basically said there is that if you criticise this band, you're either:
a) stupid.
or
b) a snob.

So, y'know.. let's not shy away from the issue that you've basically dressed up "my opinion is superior to your opinion" in a multi-paragraph rant-o-matic.

haha

i love foals.

but

i do love the ed fitz more.

Doctor's orders

I with the Doctor on this
I'd stay behind my desk for life and bin all my musical aspirations rather than be associated with a successful band on the par of Foals....which no doubt I probably will...but. Simply because they exist doesn't mean squat. Giving them airtime as I am currently doing (and many already have) is merely helping to propel thier luke warm indie disco tatt further than it ever could based purely on it's musical merits.
So I'll shut up and hope the next big thing comes soon and takes our minds off this flat-pack, hair driven fart rock.

Good day

It already has

>>So I'll shut up and hope the next big thing comes soon and takes our minds off this flat-pack, hair driven fart rock.<<

joe lean and the ting tings

i was at the party with the fire extinguisher incident

it was a bit gross - more than half the audience were just taking pictures of the less than half who were dancing

their set was very good, but the wall demolition had more to do with it being a bunch of kids off their faces at a squat than their music.

and it was a few hours after they played, so whatever

Do Foals

count as a guilty pleasure?

they're on the front cover of the fly this month

'most important band of '08'. Sounds like a bit of a premature claim

I had a good ol laugh at that.

:D

Nearly as funny as NME saying that the Frattellis album was one of the most important albums you could own.

Antidotes

Is presently entertaining the DiSopolis.

Good times.
